Boris Karloff, 1887-1967 Actor Boris Karloff, whose career spanned 50 years, the Broadway stage, radio, and films was born the son of a British diplomat, and abandoned aristocracy to star in nearly 200 movies. His most famous, "Frankenstein", marked its 70th anniversary in the year 2001, and remains one of Hollywood's classics. As respected for his off-screen gentleness as for his masterful film characterizations, "Hollywood's King of Horror", Boris Karloff, died February 2nd, 1969. Born November 23rd, 1887 in Camberwell, London, England, Boris Karloff began life as William Henry Pratt. The youngest of 9 children of wealthy British diplomat Charles Henry Pratt, Karloff enjoyed the privileges customary to the family of an agent of The Crown in late Victorian England: His childhood included private schooling, travel, culture, and enrollment at London University in preparation of a career in his country's foreign service. In 1909, however, Karloff, then 21 and still known as William Pratt, eloped with Olive Wilton, the first of his 5 wives, and left England for Canada. Having married against his family's wishes, as well as incurred some additional disfavor for abandoning an appointment in government service, Karloff refused to use his family's prominence to secure work in Canada, then much under the influence of the Crown. To support himself, Karloff took work as a farm laborer in the province of Ontario, where he first attempted to realize his dream of becoming an actor.

    BORIS KARLOFF

    biography
Born William Henry Pratt in London, England, in November 1887, Boris Karloff was born into a family of British diplomats. He married stage actress Olive Wilton in 1909, and Karloff himself was bitten by the acting bug. The marriage didn't last long, and he soon left Britain for North America, where he honed his skills as an actor. He made his film debut in 1916, and by 1919 Karloff was scoring some success in films. Throughout the 1920s, Karloff acted in dozens of films but never had the breakthrough role he needed. But in 1931, when Bela Lugosi turned down the role of the monster in the Universal Studios film Frankenstein , Karloff finally found success.

    The Mr. Wong Mysteries
The Charlie Chan series had been going for several years, and had created a curious appetite for oriental sleuths. Chan was soon followed by Mr. Moto, who was played (in an inspired, or insane, piece of casting) by Peter Lorre. In 1938, little Monogram studios decided they wanted an oriental detective of their own. So they acquired the rights to Hugh Wiley's James Lee Wong character, then appearing in magazine serials. Since Peter Lorre was playing a Japanese detective, it might have seemed only natural for Monogram to seek out Boris Karloff for the role of Mr. Wong. Although they were never more than simple potboilers, the series proved a commercial success for Monogram, and some of the scripts were even recycled as later Charlie Chan flicks. Karloff appeared in the first five Wong films; for the sixth and final film, Keye Luke assumed the role. presented in chronological order Mr WONG, DETECTIVE (1938) dir: William Nigh; w/ Boris Karloff, Grant Withers, Maxine Jennings, Lucien Prival. · · · Some business tycoons who are shipping lethal gas to European armies are being slain by their own product in a series of seemingly untraceable murders. It's up to Mr. Wong to uncover the diabolical killer. Yes, Karloff is quite convincing in the role of a Chinese detective. No, Karloff doesn't actually look Chinese, but the most startling thing is seeing him with slicked down black hair. It's a typical "B" potboiler murky photography, small cast, short scenes, & clipped dialogue. The plot, however, is intelligent & creative, and the surprise identity of the murderer can be figured out by a careful watcher.

and choose "Save Target As" ABOUT THE RADIO SHOW: A few years later, while situated in a theatre in North Dakota where he played up to 105 roles in a 53-week run, Karloff came to the realization that playing character roles and heavies were the only roles that he could get, mainly due to his persona and his bowed legs, which gave off a very creepy feeling. It was during this time, when Karloff was in Los Angeles for a small role that he got, that James Whale gazed upon Karloff while he was eating, and was drawn to Karloff's unusually large and misshapen head. Hollywood had its FRANKENSTEIN! While filming the movie, the studio wanted to keep Karloff's identity secret. Even during the credits, "The Monster" was accredited to "?." When the movie broke out, 44-year old Karloff stole the show from Colin Clive, the movie's lead role. Karloff went on to create more scares throughout the 1930s. When Hollywood's Monster craze died out, Karloff returned to the stage. It was in 1956 that Karloff received a Tony nomination for his role in "The Lark." Interesting note: Karloff is the great-grandnephew of Anna Leonowens, who is the real life inspiration for the widely read book, and subsequent movie, "Anna and the King."
