Presented by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society November 13-15 1998 at the Adam's Mark Hotel The scope of Bruce Jensen's professional art is rivaled by few. From the coveted Galactic Empires collectable cards to the cover art for such notable works as William Gibson's Neuromancer and Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? to presiding as art director of the weekend edition of CBS News, it must seem to anyone but him that he's spreading himself a little too thin. Not to mention the course he's taught in science fiction illustration at New York City's School of Visual Arts, his work on Marvel Comics' Spiderman and Incredible Hulk titles, the covers of Tor's North American editions of Frameshift, paintings and drawings for cover art of such novels as The Rising of the Moon by Flynn Connolly and Snowcrash and Diamond Age Yes, it seems that once Bruce Jensen received his BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design in 1984, he took off and never looked back. His paintings, rendered primarily in acrylic, are collage-like and realistic, notable for their geometric composition. Even more notable is his work's ability to evoke the work's theme without referring to a specific situation, an indication of care and precision few cover artists display. And despite his attention to detail and devotion to the many aspects of his profession, the Indianapolis native still, remarkably, finds time to spend with his wife Yoshie Odaka and the many birds that live with them in their New York home. | |
