(CNN) His name is legendary, his exploits mythic, his life the stuff of romance. Jesse James is undoubtedly the most celebrated criminal in American history. He evokes images of Arthurian knights errant. He has been called a latter-day Robin Hood. Historian T.J. Stiles, however, offers a different kind of portrait. To him, Jesse James was the original Osama bin Laden. Stiles builds his case in "Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War," an exhaustive biography that roots the bandit firmly in time and place, a vortex of issues and emotions called Missouri. Jesse and his brother Frank were raised as slaveholders in Clay County, nestled along the Missouri River at the border with Kansas. Clay County was deeply enmeshed in the economic, political and social milieu of the Southern states. Jesse's formative years coincided with the "Bloody Kansas" era playing out literally next door. When war came, first Frank, then Jesse rode off with the bushwhackers, guerrillas who terrorized Unionists.
Running wild
The war ended in 1865 everywhere except Missouri. Secessionist passions raged unabated and Jesse James was in the thick of it. He wrapped himself in the cloak of the Confederacy as he launched his life of crime, with media help from newspaper editor John Edwards. James used the connection as an outlet for propaganda. In letters to newspapers, he heralded his robberies and murders as justified political acts, all the while maintaining he hadn't committed them.

Jesse James was one of history's most well known criminals. He was a vicious man and lead a long life of crime. James was born on September 5,1847 in Kearny, Missouri. His father was a Baptist Minister and his mother was Zerelda James. She did not work. Through James life, he had several father figures, but little guidance from his own father. His mother had remarried twice by the time James was 8. He has two step-brothers, two step-sisters, and two natural brothers. James had wanted to join the rebels cause for much of his teen life. He was too young to join when he first got interest, but by 1862 he had joined Quantrills Raiders. bodyOffer(19664) During his time and involvement with them he fought at Centralia Massacre in 1864. Soon after this James formed a gang. The gang consisted of people that wanted to get money the easy way, and rob banks and trains. The very first bank robbery attempt failed and had many casualties. This robbery was at Liberty Missouri and was in February of 1866. There were several banks after this that were a great success. Jesse James was the mastermind behind the successful plans. He knew the layout very well and knew how to get fear from the people they were robbing. J.W. Whicher was in search for James and his band. Once he was hot on the trail, he was murdered. No one knows for sure who did it, but people speculated that it was part of James pack. After a nine year courtship with his cousin Zerelda, they got married in April of 1875. Together they had two children, Mary and Jesse. One of the greatest downfalls of James gang was the robbery in Northfield, MO. It was a bad robbery and there were many deaths, both town people as well as those in the gang. The town and surrounding towns were both terrified and very angry. They formed a pack in hundreds to go after them. Only two of the gang were caught however, and they were in fact put in prison. After a few more robberies, Jesse James was killed. He was betrayed by a member of his gang, Bob Ford for the reward money.

retold by
S. E. Schlosser One day, as Jesse James and his gang were riding through Missouri, they saw a farmhouse and stopped to ask for something to eat. A widow lived there with three small children. She didn't have much in the house, but shared with them what she had. It was while they were eating lunch that Jesse James noticed that something was bothering this generous widow. He questioned her about it, and she broke down and told him her story. The mortgage was due on the house that very day, and since her husband had died, she did not have the money to pay it. Her landlord was not a generous man, and was sure to put her children and herself out on the street. "How much money do you need to pay the mortgage?" Jesse asked the widow. "Fifteen hundred dollars," the widow sobbed. Jesse James took out his money bag, counted out $1500 dollars and presented it to the widow. "I can't take this," she protested, but Jesse James insisted she use the money to pay off the mortgage.

Jesse James: The Show-Me State's
Most Famous Train Robber The Legend of Jesse James is known the world over. He is probably the most famous and celebrated Missourian after Harry S. Truman. Little in the way of fact exists about James and what you are about to read is merely an attempt to tell his story. Jesse James was born on September 5, 1847 in Kearney, MO. During the Civil War, the teenager James joined a band of pro-Southern guerrillas under the notorious William Quantrill. As one of Quantrill's irregulars, James learned the art of being an outlaw. As one of Central's Raiders, James attacked Union supply trains and depots. Many individual atrocities were committed by this notorious band of guerrilla fighters in Missouri. Quantrill justified his actions by saying that they were fighting on the side of the Confederacy. The Confederacy benefited from the actions of Quantrill, but they never recognized him as a member of the Confederacy. In 1873, the James Gang tired of robbing banks and decided to try their hand at robbing trains. On July 21, 1873, the James Gang robbed the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad at Adair, Iowa. The gang had learned that $75,000 dollars in gold was to be transported on the train. According to the

Drop me a line We are now in the presence of one of the most notorious outlaws of the Wild West, a man who provided pulp to the popular dime novels of his era as a celebrated bank and train robber. He was the bandit-hero, a gallant rebel who kept Missouri in an uproar for an entire decade, a legend that has remained immortalized, and that man is no other than Jesse Woodson James.
Jesse was, by all accounts, a bad boy. As it was in the day of the Wild West, and to this day for historians, nothing was more fascinating than an outlaw who was daring, bold and lived by his own codes.
Zerelda Samuel Jesse James
Jesse was described by those who knew him as generous, noble-hearted, intelligent, assertive, good-looking, having a prankish charm and courteous behavior to women.

In 1866, Jesse and Frank became the leaders of a band of outlaws with the Younger brothers and Jim Reed, where their partnership in crime and trail of robberies and murders moved through most of the central states.

JESSE JAMES Outlaw Young Jesse James learned a lot about guerrilla activities during the U.S. Civil War, fighting and sabotaging the Union army in the cause of the Confederacy. After the war, Jesse formed a gang of outlaws (including his brother Frank); in 1866 they began an on-again, off-again crime spree that lasted fifteen years. They robbed banks and trains, eluding law enforcement and gaining a popular following (and mythic stature), until James was betrayed and murdered by Bob Ford, one of his gang.

James Gang members averaged around twelve men, formerly members of Quantrills Guerillas James Gang carried out stagecoach robberies with elaborate escape routes and knew the area, the lawmen and the communities. The Missouri southern sympathizers regularly sheltered from the long arm of the law the James Gang. It is thought because of there affiliation with Quantrills Guerillas Wearing long prairie duster coats, the James Gang would slowly arrive to the town of choice. Drifting in by ones and twos casually looking up and down the street. When all the scouting was done and the time was right they would ad more bank robberies to there list of accomplishments Banks were a specialty of the James Gang but they clearly loved stagecoach robberies and train robberies as well. Over the course of time, the James Gang was accredited with at least 10 bank robberies

JESSE WOODSOM JAMES Jesse James, the son of a Baptist Minister, was born 1847 in Missouri. At the age of 15, during the Civil War, he joined a band of pro-Confederate guerrillas led by William C. Quantrill. This band of guerrillas raided farms and communities sympathetic to the Union. In 1862 Quantrill was commissioned a captain in the Confederate army; that same year he was declared an outlaw by Union authorities. On Aug. 21, 1863, Quantrill led his guerrillas on their most infamous exploit when they burned and pillaged the town of Lawrence, Kansas, killing more than 150 unarmed men, women, and children. In October, they killed about 100 Union soldiers at Baxter Springs, Kans. Two years later the guerrillas were looting in Kentucky when a small force of Union soldiers surprised them and fatally wounded Quantrill. After the war, Jesse James formed a gang with his brother, Frank, and several other men. They held up banks, stagecoaches, and trains until 1876, when the gang was decimated trying to rob a bank in Northfield, Minn. The two brothers escaped and formed a new gang. On Apr. 3, 1882, Jesse was shot and killed by Robert Ford, a fellow gang member, for the reward. Jesse was shot in St. Joseph, Missouri and was buried at his childhood farm home near Kearney, MO.
