Animation World Magazine , Issue 2.2, May 1997 An Interview With Aardman's Peter Lord by Wendy Jackson Peter Lord As an animator, director and co-founder of Aardman Animations, Peter Lord has established himself as one of today's premier talents in stop-motion, or, as the Brits call it, "model" animation. Together with David Sproxton, he established Aardman Animations in 1972, after experimenting with animation in their school years. Early endeavors produced a The Amazing Adventure of Morph, a clay animation series for children that aired on BBC in the early 1980s. Conversation Pieces, a series of short films commissioned by Britian's Channel Four led to the development of Aardman's unique style, appealing to adults more than children. This eventually led to many commercial jobs for the studio, and the landmark Sledgehammer video for Peter Gabriel, in collaboration with Stephen Johnson and The Brothers Quay. As the studio grew, additional talents were added, such as Richard Goleszowski, Jeff Newitt, Steve Box and Nick Park, whose 1994 Creature Comforts and Wallace and Gromit films

Barry - Member of the Astro-Investigation and Defense Service, spends lots of time suffering his way through being splattered with blood and entrails. Frank - Seems to be the leader of the Astro-Investigation and Defense Service, also sings the title song. Ozzy - Final member of the Astro-Investigation and Defense Service, a little on the weird/violent side. Giles - Hapless collector who is almost eaten. Robert - A retarded alien, played by Peter Jackson! Alien Leader - Concealed in the guise of a old man most of the movie, he finally bursts into his horrid "true" form under duress. Sort of looks like a pregnant Rogaine ad. Derek bores through him with the chainsaw. This is what bad movies are all about folks, I'm talking a couple of blokes, some chicken guts, automatic weapons, and aliens eating people! All written/produced/directed/acted/SFX'd by a budding Peter Jackson, it's almost a shame we lost him to work on "The Lord of the Rings" and other Tolkien works. The plot is simple and nicely executed, considering the budget they were under it's almost poetry.

This book has been rather a long time in the making, thanks to various relocations, career changes, health problems, and a great deal of goofing off on my part. After writing the 2nd Edition, I quit defense computing in 1992 and returned to academia to teach Expert Systems for the first time since leaving Edinburgh, as well as Artificial Intelligence, Numeric Computation, Symbolic Computation and Parallel Systems. Reports by Non-attendees to the Annual Meeting Conservation of the Asiatic cheetah Acinonyx jubatus venaticus in Iran (submitted by Peter Jackson and presented by John Seidensticker) The Asiatic cheetah once ranged from Arabia to India, through Arabia, Iran, central Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and, particularly in Iran and the Indian subcontinent, it was numerous. Cheetahs were easy to train, and rulers kept huge numbers for hunting gazelles. The Moghul Emperor of India, Akbar, is said to have had 1,000 at a time. It appears in many Persian and Indian miniature paintings. But by 1900 it was already headed for extinction in many areas. The last physical evidence of cheetahs in India was three shot (with two bullets) by the Maharajah of Surguja in 1947 in eastern Madhya Pradesh. By 1990, cheetahs appeared to survive only in Iran. Estimated to number over 200 during the 1970s, current estimates by Iranian biologist Hormoz Asadi put the number at 50 to 100. Following the Islamic Revolution of 1978, wildlife conservation was relegated to a back seat; reserves were invaded by livestock, which overgrazed the land, while both cheetahs and their principal prey, gazelles, were ruthlessly hunted, resulting in a rapid decline. As a result, the Asiatic cheetah is now listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals. Initial surveys by Asadi in the latter half of 1997 show that urgent action is required to rehabilitate wildlife populations, especially gazelles, and their habitat if the cheetah is to survive.

But after catching the acting bug at university and adding a string of key roles to his credit, he now plays arch fiend Gollum in next winter's much-heralded film of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Alan Hayes talked to him. Actor Andy Serkis has a peach of a role in the film they said could never be made. As Gollum in Peter Jackson 's The Lord of the rings, Mr Serkis, who grew up in Rulsilp Manor, has spent the last six months in New Zealand, 'halfway up volcanoes, in glacial streams and marshes', as well as in a special studio, creating the sort of effects that have finally made JRR Tolkien's epic possible. Shooting all three parts of the story simultaneously, Kiwi director Mr Jackson and his compatriot special-effects whizz-kids has wrestled the tale of sword, sorcery, fantastic creatures and little Hobbits to near completion, and part one is due on screen in December (a cartoon version of the early 1980's fizzled after only one book had been animated). Mr. Serkis will be back down under this summer for three months of post-production work, finishing the special effects which have made it all possible.
