Bell (Sr.) and Hazel Seerley Bell. The family shortly moved to Winnetka, Illinois, where he graduated from New Trier High School in 1944. He received a BS in Physics from Harvard University in 1947 and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Cornell University in 1951, where he studied nuclear physics under Hans Bethe. George moved to New Mexico in 1951, where he was a driving force in the Theoretical Physics Division of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) for almost 50 years. In the early part of his career, he worked on reactor physics and safety, co-authoring the then definitive text on the subject and winning a distinguished award from the American Nuclear Society. In the 1960s, George was one of small group of physicists at Los Alamos who began to work seriously in biology. He focussed on immunology, and in 1970 published a seminal paper formulating a quantitative immunological model that could be computationally explored. In 1974, he founded the Theoretical Biology and Biophysics group, and served as group leader until 1990. Through George's work and leadership in attracting younger scientists, this group turned into a leading center for theoretical immunology and cell biology. He was a founder of the Center for Human Genome Studies in 1988, and continued to be actively involved in the Human Genome Project until his death.

Its home in Westport, Connecticut, may dormant at the moment, but that's not stopping White Barn Theatre from having a 57th season. Just like last year, White Barn will stage weekend shows this summer, June 4-26, in Greenwich Village. By special arrangement with the Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation, four special weekend presentations will take place at the historic Lucille Lortel Theatre at 121 Christopher Street. Lortel was the actress and producer known for embracing edgy, new and foreign work in the mid-20th century, both Off-Broadway and at her White Barn in rustic Connecticut. Produced by Vincent Curcio and artistic supervisor Donald Saddler, with artistic advisory board member Dr. Mary C. Henderson, the four productions were announced May 10. They are:
  • June 4-6: In the Basie-Miller Mood , a musical celebration directed and choreographed by Mercedes Ellington with Frank Owens as musical director. The best of swing-era music will be performed by a company of singers and dancers celebrating 100 years of the music of Count Basie and Glenn Miller.

His parents, Scottish-English immigrants, were great admirers of General George Washington, and named their son after their hero. Irving had many interests including writing, architecture and landscape design, traveling, and diplomacy. He is best known, however, as the first American to make a living solely from writing. Initially, he wrote under pen names; one was "Diedrich Knickerbocker." In 1809, using this pen name, Irving wrote A History of New-York that describes and pokes fun at the lives of the early Dutch settlers of Manhattan. Eventually, this pen name came to mean a person from New York, and is where the basketball team The New York Knickerbockers (Knicks)got its name. By the late 1820s, Irving had gained a reputation throughout Europe and America as a great writer and thinker. Because of his popularity, Irving received many important honors. This Spanish were so pleased with Irving's writing that in 1828, they elected him to the Real Academia de la Historia. In 1830, Irving received a gold medal in history from the Royal Society of Literature in London, and also received honorary degrees from Oxford, Columbia, and Harvard.

Photograph by Alfred Ellis and Walery, London. [Annotate 7.2] [Henry Brodribb Irving, son of the late Sir Henry Irving, was born in London in 1870. His first appearance on the stage was at the Garrick Theatre, London, in "School," when twenty-one. In 1906 he toured with success throughout the United States, appearing in plays made memorable by his father, "The Lyons Mail," "Charles I.," and "The Bells." Mr. Irving distinctly inherits Sir Henry Irving's ability both as an actor and as a thoughtful student of acting as an art. In 1905 he gave a lecture, largely autobiographical, to the Academy of Dramatic Art in London. It appeared in the Fortnightly Review

    Temptations on the Stage
[Annotate 7.8] [Annotate 7.9] [Annotate 7.10] Sometimes you may hear your calling sneered at by those who pursue it. There are few professions that are not similarly girded at by some of their own members, either from disappointment or some ingrained discontent. When you hear such detraction, fix your thoughts not on the paltry accidents of your art, such as the use of cosmetics and other little infirmities of its practice, things that are obvious marks for the cheap sneer, but look rather to what that art is capable of in its highest forms, to what is the essence of the actor's achievement, what he can do and has done to win the genuine admiration and respect of those whose admiration and respect have been worth the having.

    Inspiration in Acting
[Annotate 6.5] It is often supposed that great actors trust to the inspiration of the moment. Nothing can be more erroneous. There will, of course, be such moments, when an actor at a white heat illumines some passage with a flash of imagination (and this mental condition, by the way, is impossible to the student sitting in his armchair); but the great actor's surprises are generally well weighed, studied, and balanced. We know that Edmund Kean constantly practised before a mirror effects which startled his audience by their apparent spontaneity. It is the accumulation of such effects which enables an actor, after many years, to present many great characters with remarkable completeness. [Annotate 6.6]

    Kenneth Colin Irving
Industrial Caesar 1899-1992 During his lifetime, K.C. Irving was quick to share credit with his sons and associates for the amazing development of his organization and its many companies. They, however, were equally quick to emphasize that K.C. Irving was the person primarily responsible for the remarkable growth of their corporate colossus. His father, J.D. Irving, a well-established businessman, may have been a role model but from earliest days k.C. Irving was fiercely independent, first as a young boy running small business ventures in his home town and from the mid-1920s onward, as the overall enterprise grew, as its dynamic force, its master strategist and guiding influence. Early in his life, young K.C. Irving demonstrated that he liked a challenge as had his great-grandfather, George Irving, who had sailed from Scotland for Canada across the howling Atlantic in 1822. Settling in 1826 in the Eastern section of New Brunswick in the area that was organized as Kent County, George Irving built a home and cleared 200 acres of land. When he arrived, New Brunswick was still largely underdeveloped with a population of some 70,000 people of European descent in an area of 28,000 square miles. Life was difficult and only those with self-reliance and hardihood were able to get ahead. George Irving had these qualities and bequeathed them to his descendants. By the early 1920s he was operating a profitable gas station and Ford dealership as an extension to the Irving General Store. Soon he established in Buctouche his own garage and service station, the first in town. He sold Imperial Oil products as its agent in Kent County. When Imperial withdrew his right to sell their products he began in July 1924 to import gasoline and lubricating oil from the United States. This was a key step in the development of the Irving Group of Companies.
