Helen Hunt Jackson biography
A brief biography of Helen Hunt Jackson, a nineteenth century woman known as a champion of the American Indian.
Helen Hunt Jackson was born on October 18, 1931 as Helen Maria Fiske. She was born and raised in Amherst, Massachusetts. Helen Maria Fiske. Helen grew up in a literary atmosphere and she was herself a poet and writer of childrens stories, novels, and essays. She published her work under the pen name of H.H.H. Her poetry was the outflow of deep sympathetic thought on the problem of lifes trials and temptations. Her verses were strong and noble, never giving attention to mere prettiness of verse. One of her early works, Bits of Travel, revealed the humorous side of her nature. With friendly merriment she describes human nature. Soon, Helens interests turned to the plight of the American Indian. As a keen and sympathetic observer, her attention was attracted by the unfair treatment our American Indians received at the hands of government agents. Her interest in the American Indians began in Boston in 1879 at a lecture by Chief Standing Bear, who described the ill-treatment of the Ponca Indians in Nebraska. Helen was furious by what she heard, but being well balanced by nature, she made a painstaking study of the situation. She kept her feelings in check and searched for facts. When she was at last fully equipped for her work, she took up the pen in defense of the wronged Indian. bodyOffer(21494) Because she was in poor health at the time, she wrote with desperate haste. A Century of Dishonor appeared calling for change from the base, selfish policy to a treatment characterized by humanity and justice.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) "As Good As It Gets" actress Helen Hunt has something that makes life even better: a new baby girl. Hunt, who won an Oscar for that movie, gave birth to the child in Beverly Hills, publicist Stephen Huvane told The Associated Press Friday. Makena' lei Gordon Carnahan, born May 13, and her mom are both healthy, Huvane said. The father is Hunt's companion, Matthew Carnahan, who produced the TV series "Fastlane." The baby's first name comes from a town in Maui, Hawaii, and her middle name is from Hunt's father, TV director Gordon Hunt. She arrived several weeks early, weighing about 6 pounds. This is the second child for Carnahan and the first for the 40-year-old Hunt, who previously was married to Hank Azaria, who voices several characters on "The Simpsons." Hunt, former co-star of the sitcom "Mad About You," hasn't appeared in a movie since 2001's "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion."

Helen Hunt Jackson
Helen Hunt Jackson led a hard life on the frontier plains; she lost her husband and two children during her lifetime. However, she was among the first authors to draw attention to the condition of the American Indian through her two books Ramona and The Indian's Plight. On one of her trips back east, she attended a reception and met members of the Indian Commission. The Ponca Chief, Standing Bear, told Helen of the tragic plight of his people. His interpreter was Bright Eyes. Helen said she would help raise funds for the Ponca People so they could return to their land. "I have done now, I believe, the last of the things I have said I would never do. I have become what I have said a thousand times was the most odious thing in the world - a woman with a cause," she wrote a friend. She defended the Ute and in Colorado, it was said she was without a sympathizer in the state. She stood her ground and wrote A Century of Dishonor, which she considered her most important book. Helen was described as "the most brilliant, impetuous and thoroughly individual woman in her time". She rose above personal tragedy and became on of the most successful writers of her day. She included as her friends, Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Through her dedication to Indian reform during the last five years of her life, she wrote herself into American history.

Writer, activist for Native Americans As expressed in her devastating criticisms of federal Indian policy and white-Indian relations in A Century of Dishonor and the novel Ramona, Helen Hunt Jackson was one of the most influential defenders of Native American rights in late 19th-century America. Introduction In 1852, the vivaciously volatile Helen Fiske married U.S. Army captain (later major) Edward Bissell Hunt, brother of a former New York governor. For the next 11 years, she and her husband, an accomplished engineer officer, followed the typically mobile life of a career military family. These years were marked by deep personal tragedy. Jackson's first child Murray died in 1854 of a brain disease when he was less than a year old. In 1863, her husband suffocated while experimenting with an innovative underwater naval vessel or weapon of his own design. Two years later, her other son "Rennie" succumbed to diphtheria. In 1865, the year the Civil War ended, Jackson was alone and grief stricken. After a brief period of mourning, however, the resilient Jackson was eager to embark upon a new life.

A notable author, Miss Jackson is best known for her novel Ramona about the plight of Native Americans. In her later years, she corresponded with Emily Dickinson encouraging her to publish her poetry. Both are in the Jones Library 's Emily Dickinson Collection.
In early 1883, Emily Dickinson sent pressed flowers to Helen Hunt Jackson with this cryptic note:

Helen Hunt Jackson on the Web
Comparatively little is found of Helen Hunt Jackson's writing on the Web. She is primarily known for two full length books on Native Americans, the novel Ramona and the non-fiction work A Century of Dishonor . However, the influence of these two works is easily seen today. The novel's popularity has resulted in a permanent influence on the geography of southern California. Inland from San Diego, it is impossible to drive far without encountering the name Ramona on streets and major highways. The small city Ramona was renamed in 1884 after the heroine of the novel. The Palo Alto Historical Association notes that Ramona Circle and Ramona Street were both named for the novel's heroine. The book is listed in Traditional Classics in Children's Literature. However, the other book, A Century of Dishonor , had a more far reaching effect on American politics, chronicling the treatment of the Native Americans by the U.S. government. For many years Ms. Jackson circulated tracts and petitions in support of Indian causes. She went on nationwide lecture tours and challenged Theodore Roosevelt to a discussion of the condition of the Indians in America. After the uproar caused by the publication of A Century of Dishonor , Ms. Jackson was appointed a special commissioner to investigate conditions for the Indians in California.
