Barry Humphries is a famous Australian comedian.
It's the characters he's invented that's made him famous.
"Hello Possums !!! " (Edna Everage)
'Dame Edna Everage' is Barry Humphries' best known creation.
Others include...the grandfatherly 'Sandy Stone'.
"There's no doubt about it, Beryl makes a lovely sponge finger." (Sandy Stone)
And the revolting, Sir Les Patterson.
"...really go down Australian."
(Les Patterson) "I still seem to shock people even though I look terribly respectable now in my old age...I think what I do is encourage people to look at Australia critically and with affection and humour, which is what all comedians should do."
Barry Humphries was born in 1934. His family lived in a respectable Melbourne suburb.
Barry was their first child. They bought him everything he wanted but didn't spend much time with him. Barry used to spend hours playing dress-ups in the back garden.
"Disguising myself as different characters and I had a whole box of dressing up clothes...Red Indian, sailor suit, chinese costume and I was very spoiled in that way...I also found that entertaining people gave me a great feeling of release, making people laugh was a very good way of befriending them. People couldn't hit you could they if they were laughing."

Barry Humphries 17 February -) is an Australian comedian best known for his characters Dame Edna Everage , a Melbourne housewife, and Sir Les Patterson , Australia's foul-mouthed Cultural Attache to Britain Barry Humphries was born in Melbourne . After school and the University of Melbourne he joined the Melbourne Theatre Group, and created the character of Edna Everage in 1956. In the early sixties he moved to London and appeared in several West End productions. He first brought Mrs. Everage to the British stage in 1969 for his one-man show "Just a Show". Humphries' characters, especially Dame Edna, have made him a national figure, with numerous stage and television shows. His character, Dame Edna, was inspired by a character from his earlier film The Adventures of Barry Mackenzie , in which he is sent by his aunt, Edna, around Europe to finish his education . This included a lovely scene where Mackenzie (Barry Humphries) finds out that curry is an aphrodisiac and so preparing for his first sexual encounter pours a tin of curry down his trousers - magic. He was given the Order of Australia in 1982, and an Honorary Doctorate of Griffith University (Australia) in 1994. He is married to Lizzie Spender, the daughter of Sir

Life's No Drag for Barry Humphries
Exclusive Finding Nemo / Barry Humphries Interview by Paul Fischer in New York.
Barry Humphries seems relieved when the voice on the other end of the phone is that of an Aussie. "I've been here [New York] talking to nobody but these damn Yanks", says Humphries, laughingly.
In good spirits, he was in the Big Apple where he had been busy promoting Nicholas Nickleby, the new film adaptation of the Dickens classic, but Humphries had another reason to be all smiles: He's one of the Aussie voices in the now box office hit, Finding Nemo. "I play a vegetarian shark", laughs Humphries, about his 'Bruce' character. "I'm actually a very carnivorous shark trying to give it up, on a 12-step vegan diet. It was a great experience and I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product." There is no sign of his famed alter-ego Dame Edna anywhere to be seen in this stereotypically character, donning a deep, unrecognizably gruff voice. "I'm not sure what they found in me to play him, but obviously I'm glad they did."

Barry Humphries, sometimes better known as Dame Edna Everage, was born and educated in Melbourne. Since the late fifties he has divided his time between England, Australia and the USA, performing in a series of one-man theatrical events and television appearances, the latter of which have won him the Gold Rose at Montreux. He is the author of several books and plays. MORE PLEASE, his first autobiographical foray, won the J R Ackerley Prize in 1993 and was described by Auberon Waugh as "an extraordinary cocktail of a book … a literary masterpiece", and by Alec Guinness as "a marvellously funny, distressing and vivid autobiography." His second autobiographical work, MY LIFE AS ME, was published in 2002 to critical acclaim.

`When I was nine, my mother gave all my books to the Salvation Army. I was distraught. "But you've read them, Barry," laughed my mother, as if it were the height of self-indulgence to retain books after a first perusal. "I hope you're not going to grow up to be a selfish little boy." Sadly, I did.'

    Karl Popper meets Bazza McKenzie
A humorous sketch from Honi Soit, 1971 Peter Coleman, friend and biographer of Humphries, points out that the most difficult assignment for any journalist or author is to find just where the real Barry Humphries is "coming from" behind the various personas that he assumes on and off stage.  Some useful insights come from a piece by David Leser, appropriately published in The Australian Women's Weekly, October 2001.  The irony of this is that the Weekly is the quintessential  source which reflected and informed the unique Australian attitudes to house, home and life generally that provided the raw material and the targets for a great deal of Humphries satire. The Weekly would have been the essential and probably the only regular reading matter for the prototypes of  Edna Everage.  As Humphries told Leser,  "The Weekly was the Gideon's Bible of the period. It took a week to read. It was all you needed". Everyone wants to know how much of Dame Edna or other Humphries creations reflects the real-life attitudes and values of the man within.  However the question is wrongly put.  The business of the creator is creation and if he creates characters and actions of almost indescribable courage, or depravity, of triumph or disaster, of largeness of vision or mean-spirits, these reflect his capacities and his choice of  subject matter, not his inner soul, his aspirations or his own views.  Humphries said to Leser,  "If I was in debate with Edna, I would disagree with Edna Everage on almost every point  moral or ethical or metaphysical.". The veracity of the picture that he paints will reflect his capacity to empathise with a wide range of human experience, but that is a very different thing from 'acting out'. "The actor has to find something of his character in himself."

Barry Humphries The Man Behind Dame Edna Everage A short, behind-the-scenes chat between Michael T. Reynolds , Talkin' Broadway's Senior Editor, and the American Humphriesiologist David Martin Bruson . Mr. Bruson is an old friend and the authorized online biographer of Barry Humphries (Dame Edna). MTR: David, I've just returned from a preview performance of DAME EDNA The Royal Tour . I've never laughed so hard in my life. Is Dame Edna the only character Barry does in his shows now? DMB: Barry is widely known in North America for his character Dame Edna Everage. But during his 40-year career as a character actor, Barry has created several remarkable creatures. Among them are Sir Les Patterson, Alexander "Sandy" Stone, Lance Boyle and Martin Agrippa. Sir Les and Sandy Stone are still present in most of Barry's shows even today. Sir Les Patterson, Australian cultural attache to the Court of St. James in London and Chairman of the Australian Chapter of the International Cheese Board, is a hard-drinking, womanizing elder statesman. Les was invented in 1974 for a show in Hong Kong. Barry was entertaining Australian servicemen and expatriates and he thought they might not react too kindly when a Melbourne housewife took the stage. He felt that Sir Les would be useful to buffer any attacks from a potentially threatening audience. By 1997, Sir Les had become so enormously popular that he had starred in his own one-man show, hosted a documentary, produced a successful album, and even appeared in his first feature film
