We also have a large collection of analytical literature - i.e. books about crime writers and the genre. This is a collection that can be found nowhere else in Denmark - not even in the Royal Library. We also have a fair collection short story anthologies and of Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magaine - probably the best, the most popular, and the longest running short story magazine exclusively for the crime genre. Finally we also have a nice collection of magazines related to the genre, newspaper clippings of articles and reviews, and arti-facts such as Scandinavian prizes to crime writers, stamps, records, tapes, videos a.s.o. The History of Dylan Humphrey Exotic Beginnings
I guess I'll start in Hawaii. My Mom toyed with the idea of naming me THOR KAMAYAMAYA HUMPHREY, in deference to my ethnicity and birthplace, but settled on Dylan Wells, in deference to me and my uncle. I can't complain. Oh, when was this? May 31, 1976. That makes me a Fire Dragon according to Chinese Astrology, a FOUR and a FIVE according to numerology, and either a Taurus or a Gemini, depending on whether you think Ophiuchus should be in the zodiac or not.
My parents and I moved to Barrington, Rhode Island when I was about 3 months old, pursuing my Dad's new job. That was the last I've seen of Hawaii. :( When I was 3 years old, my parents moved again, following my Dad's new job with the University of Rhode Island . This time, we landed in West Kingston, and we've been there ever since. My brother Ross was born once we got here. That was October 5, 1980. West Kingston Elementary
Against the kindergarten teacher's advice, my parents started me in the public school. West Kingston Elementary. I liked it there. Kindergarten was fun, as I remember, and 1st and 2nd grades were ok, too. Back then, I was best friends with Mike Phelps. We both had big ears, and while his stuck out more, mine were actually bigger. I was very good friends with Nick Marr, too, and by sometime in 2nd grade, I had some sort of falling out with Mike, and Nick was my best friend. I have a vivid memory of Nick, I think from 4th or 5th grade: several older kids were picking on me at recess, pushing me, etc. etc. Nick, who played Pop Warner football, came running over and threatened them, saying "You guys are dead meat!" I was both very thankful to Nick for rescuing me, and perplexed by the concept of dead meat. Isn't meat already dead?

As you are reading these words, your eyes are moving all the time. This is because the human retina has only a small region of high acuity, the fovea, allowing you to see sharply and in colour over an area about the size of your thumbnail at arm's distance. To explore a scene, the eye must move over the scene.
The eye moves by rapid saccades, each taking about 0.1 seconds, from one fixation to another, each lasting about 0.4 seconds. The image above is a simulation of the painter's view of his model at a distance of 60cm, indicating the quality of foveal (smaller circle), parafoveal (larger circle) and peripheral vision (outer area).
The eye-tracker is a biomedical research tool, used in areas as varied as dyslexia studies and jet pilot training. It measures with great accuracy where the eye fixates and for how long. Humphrey wore the eye-tracker while selecting his model and for short intermittent periods while drawing portraits. Humphrey first chose his model out of four candidates whom he was seeing for the first time. His eye explored each face with a very rapid series of short fixations, at a rate of 140 fixations per minute, each fixation lasting an average of 0.4 seconds.

Tony Blair wants a revolution in Britain's civil service.
Out will go Yes Minister's Sir Humphrey and his obstructive, stultifying culture. And in will come Wall Street's Gordon Gekko full of go-getting radicalism and a can do attitude. Blair is frustrated over delivery At least, that is the impression many civil servants and others will gain from the prime minister's latest speech on improving the public services. "We need a civil service which aims to amplify the implementation of successful change rather than, as sometimes in the past, act as a shock absorber in order to maintain the status quo. "If we want a civil service to be more entrepreneurial, to be more adventurous like their private sector counterparts, we have to loosen up," he said. Radical stuff And many civil servants listening to his latest keynote speech will have reasons to feel threatened.

    No imitation without identification
    Frans B. M. de Waal
Behavioral and Brain Sciences Abstract : We cannot solve questions about imitative learning without knowing what motivates animals to copy others. Imitative capacities can be expected to be most pronounced in relation to situations and models of great social significance. Experimental research on nonhuman primates has thus far made little effort to present such situations and models.
In our chimpanzee colony at the Yerkes Primate Center, infants sometimes get a finger stuck in the compound's fence: their finger has been hooked on the wrong way into the mesh and cannot be extracted by force. The adults have learned not to pull at the infant; victims always manage to free themselves eventually. In the meantime, however, the entire colony becomes agitated: a dramatic event analogous to a wild chimpanzee getting caught in a poacher snare. On several occasions, we have seen other apes mimic the victim's desperate situation. For example, the last time this happened I approached to assist but received threatening barks from both the mother and the alpha male. As a result, I just stood next to the fence and watched. One older juvenile came over to reconstruct the event. Looking me in the eyes, she inserted her finger into the mesh, slowly and deliberately hooking it around, and then pulled as if she, too, had gotten caught. Then two other juveniles did the same at a different location, pushing each other aside to get their fingers in the same tight spot they had selected for this game. Long ago these juveniles themselves may have experienced the situation for real, but here their charade was prompted by what had happened to the infant.

Special thanks to Scott Fybush at NorthEast Radio Watch and Mark Humphrey at WPLY (Y100) for permission to post this article. We are thankful they shared their memories with us and to members of their industry. May 17, 2004
Remembering Nick Berg Nick Berg's name and his tragic story have been all over the national headlines this week - but for many radio folks in PENNSYLVANIA, NEW YORK and NEW JERSEY, the tower worker who was beheaded in Iraq is more than just a name in the papers. Before Berg headed over to Iraq earlier this year, he was up in the air (and down on the ground) at tower sites all over the region, operating as "Prometheus Tower Service" at sites that included Ingraham Hill in Binghamton (where he installed the new WHWK 98.1 antenna, apparently his last job in the U.S.), WNGZ in Montour Falls, N.Y., the New Jersey Meadowlands and WPLY in Philadelphia, where our friend Mark Humphrey recently used Berg to install a new auxiliary antenna. Mark writes:
Nick impressed me as a very bright, resourceful and dedicated individual who cared a great deal about improving our quality of life by applying his skills and knowledge. Nick not only possessed the necessary physical ability and stamina to do the job, but had also studied engineering at Drexel, Penn, and Cornell, so I felt very comfortable letting him handle our work. I knew that he wanted to grow his own business, and I felt obligated to give him that opportunity. He had all sorts of ideas to bring technology to less-developed parts of the world, including a concrete tower which could be fabricated in remote parts of the world using locally-available materials, thus avoiding the problems of shipping steel in the absence of a good transportation network.
