Mayor of Minneapolis 1945-1948 Museum Project Announcement The trustees of the Humphrey Museum in Waverly regret that the goal for projected funds needed to create the Humphrey Museum and Learning Center has not been met, and therefore the project will not proceed. This includes renovating and restoring the Waverly Village Hall, creating exhibits, and establishing an endowment. For the past four years, the museum board has worked toward a vision which would create a place where people of all ages could experience, study, and debate the issues which Hubert Humphrey influenced during his 30 years as a public servant. The program themes of "Humphrey - The Humanitarian at Home in Waverly and the World," "The Food for Peace Program," "Civil Rights - Fifty Years of Human Rights," and "Vietnam - A Nation Divided" were to explore the problems and solutions during that period of history which are still relevant in today's world.

Could Kosovo make Gore another Hubert Humphrey?
By Chris Black/CNN
March 31, 1999
Web posted at: 6:12 p.m. EST (2312 GMT)
WASHINGTON (March 31) Vice President Al Gore has been vocal in his support for the NATO mission in Yugoslavia and for his boss' handling of the situation. "We must make the cost to (Yugoslav leader Slobodan) Milosevic so great that he changes his calculations and stops this murderous activity," Gore said Monday. Gore is echoing his president, denouncing Milosevic and supporting NATO's round-the-clock air assault of Yugoslavia. But as candidate Gore campaigns to succeed President Bill Clinton, he could pay a political price if the administration's Yugoslavia policy lacks public support. "Bill Clinton is taking the biggest public policy risk of his career and Gore just has to be there with him all the way," says Stephen Hess of the Brookings Institution. "Otherwise what happens it becomes a Hubert Humphrey situation."

Educated at the University of Minnesota, Humphrey was forced to abandon his studies when his father's business collapsed in 1932. After helping his father to resurrect the family business Humphrey returned to university and finally graduated in 1939.

, vice president of the United States under Lyndon B. Johnson. Humphrey became mayor of Minneapolis in 1945 and entered the U.S. Senate from Minnesota in 1949. He lost his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination to John F. Kennedy in 1960. Although not always liberal in his positions, he supported civil rights, federal aid to education, and social welfare legislation. His support for the war in Vietnam as vice president cost him some of his liberal support and the election when he ran for president against Richard Nixon in 1968. Humphrey returned to the Senate in 1971, where he served until his death.

Washington, D.C., 20201 Architect: Marcel Breuer (New York City) The headquarters building of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the Hubert H. Humphrey Building, located at the foot of Capitol Hill. The naming of the building in 1977 marked the first time that a federal building had been dedicated to a living person. Hubert Humphrey, who served as U.S. senator from Minnesota and Vice President of the United States, was born in 1911 and died in 1978. HHS offices housed in the Humphrey Building include the Office of the Secretary and Deputy Secretary; Office of General Counsel; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Legislation; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Budget, Technology and Finance; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation; and the Office of Public Health and Science (Assistant Secretary for Health). In addition, one of HHS' operating divisions, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, has headquarters offices in the Humphrey Building.

Constructed in three wings, the building houses some 6,000 employees in such areas as food and drugs; health professions, health education and health services; mental health; alcohol and drug abuse.
