Harry was equally certain she was a fraud. By Daniel Stashower for American History Magazine It was a tense and rather peculiar gathering that took place on July 23, 1924, at 10 Lime Street, an elegant four-story brick house in the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston. In a narrow room on the top floor, five distinguished men had come together to try to communicate with the dead. Their hostessand guide to the spirit realmwas vivacious, 36-year-old Mina Crandon, who had in recent months become well-known to the public under a stage name of sorts: "Margery the Medium." Margery greeted her visitors in a flimsy dressing gown, bedroom slippers, and silk stockings. This attire, which left little to the imagination, was intended to rule out the possibility of concealment or trickery. It may have had other effects on her male visitors. Margery's girlish figure, fashionably bobbed light-brown hair, and sparkling blue eyes combined to make her, in the words of one bedazzled admirer, "too attractive for her own good."

HOUDINI: A BIOGRAPHICAL CHRONOLOGY
1878-1898: From Hungary To America, The First Stage
The future "Genius of Escape Who Will Startle and Amaze" ran away from home when he was twelve. A postcard from "Your truant son, Ehrich Weiss," to the mother he adored is the earliest example of Houdini's handwriting in the collections of the Library of Congress, relic of the early evasion by the young man who had been born Erik Weisz in Budapest, Hungary, on March 24, 1874. When this postcard was written, Rabbi Mayer Samuel Weiss was father and husband to the impoverished immigrant family struggling to become established in America while communicating primarily in German, Hungarian, and Yiddish. Their name had been changed from Weisz to Weiss by immigration officials upon their arrival in the United States c. 1878. Mayer Weiss was to serve as rabbi of the German-speaking Zion Reform Jewish Congregation in Appleton, Wisconsin. His tenure proved short, however, and after a life of hardship he died on October 5, 1892. Having lost his father at an early age, Houdini sustained an exceptionally strong relationship with his mother, Cecilia Steiner Weiss,

From the PBS network a short biography.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/houdini/peopleevents/pande05.html
Harry Kellar (1849-1922)
The great globe-hopping illusionist was born Heinrich Keller in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1849, the son of German immigrants. Kellar showed a strong will from the start, playing dangerous games of "chicken" with oncoming trains to the delight of his friends. But when a chemical experiment went wrong and he blasted a whole in the floor of the drugstore where he apprenticed, ten-year-old Harry hopped aboard a freight train rather than face his stern parents. From then on, he would live the life of a wanderer.
After a series of odd jobs, the boy was taken in by a kindly minister in upstate New York, who offered to adopt him if he would study for the ministry. But when they went to see a traveling show, Kellar was enchanted by the conjuring of "The Fakir of Ava," and as he later confided to Houdini, "immediately got the urge to go on the stage . . . became very restless, bought books on magic and finally left my friend and benefactor." Harry tracked down the "Fakir," became his assistant, and began his professional training.
As he soon discovered, the life of an itinerant magician was not easy. His first solo performance, in Dunkirk, Michigan, at the tender of age of sixteen, was a disaster. But two years later Kellar tried again with better results, and was on his way. Always broke, he often had to duck creditors and improvise equipment borrowed from locals. But in the spring of 1869, the worn-out twenty year old made a decision that would have a great impact on his career. He took a job with the renowned "Davenport Brothers and Fay," later revered by magicians as the first successful stage mediums, whose innovations laid the foundation for Houdini’s own escape act.

He showed astounding ability in extricating himself from handcuffs, ropes, locked trunks, and bonds of any sort. HARRY HOUDINI
Of all the magicians in the world, perhaps none became more famous than Harry Houdini. His life story has been the subject of countless books and numerous films, videos, television specials and theatrical stage plays. The mere sound of his name is often enough to conjuror up thoughts of magical meanderings.
    The Controversy Of HOUDINI'S BIRTH
The exact location and date of Houdini's birth is probably one of magic's greatest mysteries. Even the correct spelling of his real name seems to be questionable. Past inaccurate writings by so-called "Magic Historians" have made searching for facts a difficult task. The majority of findings seem to indicate that Harry Houdini was born Ehrich Weiss (Erik Weisz in the Hungarian spelling) in Budapest on March 24th, 1874. Later in his life, Houdini adopted his childhood hometown of Appleton, Wisconsin as his birthplace and April 6th as his birthday, for reasons brought on by his beloved mother Cecilia Weiss. Many believe she chose this American heritage for the young Ehrich to possibly instill in him the values of an American upbringing and citizenship. The First Performances Of HARRY HOUDINI
With friend Jack Hayman, the young duo occasionally performed together, regarding themselves as being a professional act, although semi-professional probably would have suited the newcomers better. Hayman was soon replaced with Houdini's younger brother Theodore, who had gained the nick-name "Dash" because of his appeal for over stylish haberdashery. With Dash, an act billed as "The Brothers Houdini" featured a box trick which was originally credited to the English illusionist John Nevil Maskelyne, which they called "Metamorphosis". The box trick which Maskelyne took credit for, was really a very clever invention of the spirit medium team called "The Davenport Brothers". When Houdini and Dash performed it, one brother would be bound and locked in the box, and within a matter of seconds, the two somehow switched places.
    The New Act THE HOUDINIS
The truth concerning where, when, and how Houdini met and married his wife Bess is unclear. It seems that the story of their courtship and marriage has been "romanced" by so many people, in so many books and films, so many times, that actual dates and factual situations have somehow gotten lost in the shuffle. Although Bess always celebrated their wedding anniversary on June 22nd (1894), her own account of who she claimed performed the marriage ceremony on this date has raised much speculation.
