HOUDINI TIES The most famous magician of the 20th century, Harry Houdini, has a strong connection to Appleton. While his actual birthplace was Budapest, Hungary, Houdini always claimed Appleton as his boyhood home. Appleton, in turn, has claimed Houdini as its most famous son. An elementary school, a downtown plaza and a local tavern all bear his name. A two-day festival called Houdini Days was started last year by Appleton Downtown Inc.

The Houdini Club convention is good for about 200 room nights every Labor Day weekend, an otherwise slow time for the hotel. This year, the Houdini Days festival coincided with the convention, and attracted more than 5,000 people. Loss of wonder and awe Two boulders Members of the magic community feel similarly slighted by the museum.

25. The American Experience | Houdini | Margery Pamphlet
After sitting with the medium and committee of experts from the Scientific American, houdini published this expose of Margery.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/houdini/sfeature/margery1.html
An excerpt from Houdini's
n order that the reader may thoroughly understand my relation to the "Margery" case and the "Scientific American," and to make this record as complete and clear as possible, I will first review briefly my connection with that magazine's investigation of so-called psychic phenomena.
Something like three years ago I was asked to write a series of articles on Spiritualism for the "Scientific American" but had to refuse owing pressure of work. Later a Mr. James Black furnished the magazine with a number of articles which were published, but these were so inaccurate that they were assailed, and justly so, from all sides.
Having thus stirred up a hornets' nest and not having a sufficient knowledge of Spiritualism to meet the situation, one of the oldest editors on the "Scientific American," and my friend for over a quarter of a century, Mr. A.A. Hopkins, wrote me again, urging that I prepare some articles on Spiritualism for them. The letter was followed very soon by a call from Mr. Hopkins who came to my office in New York bringing with him a tall man whom he introduced as J. Malcolm Bird, also a member of the "Scientific American's" editorial staff.
November 13, 1922.

Here are some photos, newspaper articles
and other materials documenting Houdini's
challenges to mediums and spiritualism.
Houdini vs. the Spiritualists
The death of Houdini's mother focused his attention on the thriving business
of spirit mediumship, or the contacting of the dead. Whether Houdini was
genuinely outraged at the victimization of the bereaved, or whether he
simply saw an opportunity to capitalize on public interest, Houdini spent
the last 13 years of his life in a highly publicized battle with the
spiritualists. Using his knowledge of illusion, Houdini was able to duplicate the ghostly apparitions, noises and mysterious levitations produced by the working mediums and their "spirits". His "exposures" became so popular with his audiences that they took up more than a third of his regular program. Coached by the famous psychic Anna Eva Fay, Houdini cleverly became, in his way, the most famous "spiritualist" of all. In 1926, he testified at Hearings on Fortune Telling held in the House

World Fantasy-vinnare 2001 i kategorin bästa novell
The Pottawatomie Giant
Vem vet? Houdini brukar bjuda in kändisar att delta i sina nummer. Willard vägrar vilket leder till en offentlig konfrontation. I publikens ögon är Willard en otacksam skurk. Vi hoppar framåt i berättelsen eller rättare sagt snabbspolar. Willard lever sitt liv. Han förlorar sin världsmästerskapstitel 1919. Efter det är det knaprare. 1968 drar den ålderstigne Willard sitt sista andetag.

Houdini died of peritonitis resulting from appendicitis
in Detroit, Michigan,
at Grace Hospital in room 401
at 1:26 P.M. on October 31, 1926, Halloween.
He is buried at Machpelah Cemetery,
82-30 Cypress Hills Street, Queens, New York.
His entire family is buried there, mother, father, sister and brothers -
but not his wife Bess.
A plot next to Harry was planned for her,
but she couldn't be laid to rest there, because Machpelah is a Jewish cemetery, and Bess was Catholic. .....For serious Houdini Fans, this type of information can even be amusing. I received this photo recently from a person that wanted to sell it to me as being Houdini. You decide if there is any resemblance.

This is inscribed to his Sister Ethel. Houdini never had a sister named Ethel. Anyhow, interesting coincidence with the name of Harry. And now, something from an encyclopedia.....this could never be wrong...
Comptons 1996...
HOUDINI, Harry (1874-1926). Every Halloween fans of Harry Houdini gather in Appleton, Wis. (which he claimed as his birthplace), and in Chicago where his ashes were scattered in a Jackson Park lagoon in an attempt to contact his spirit. This ongoing devotion is a testimony to the career and personality of the 20th century's most famous magician. Houdini gained international renown for performances in which he released himself from ropes, handcuffs, submerged trunks, and other confinements.
Houdini was born Erik Weisz in Budapest, Hungary (not in Wisconsin), on March 24, 1874. He took his stage name from the French magician Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin. As a youth Houdini was a circus acrobat and trapeze performer. He then turned to magic and appeared in vaudeville houses and other showplaces. After immigrating to the United States he met the producer Martin Beck who persuaded him to specialize in escapes. Houdini's wife, Wilhelmina Rahner (who took the name Beatrice Houdini), served as his assistant in performances.
