By Gloria Monti From the newsletter "Yale Film News", Fall 1998 Thanks, Gloria, for making this article available to this site! Lena Horne received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at Yale's 297th Commencement on May 25, 1998. Her citation read : You once said you wanted to be a teacher instead of a singer. You have been both, because we have learned from you, from your music, from your films, and from your social activism. In the stormy weather of a segregated society, you were a pioneer who refused to be stereotyped. A singer of legendary status, your artistic achievement continues to amaze and delight us, winning new generations of admirers. You are elegant, gifted, and courageous, and we sing your praises by conferring this degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Gloria Monti (MC 85, Ph.D. 99) is a visiting lecturer and DUS in Yale's Film Studies Program this year. "Yale channeled my interest in film into an academic pursuit while I was an undergraduate," she notes. Gloria then went on to receive an M.A. in Film Studies from University of Iowa before returning to Yale's American Studies program as a graduate student in 1989. "I thought Yale was about to start a graduate program in film studies when I came back," she recalls. Gloria's dissertation, "This Ain't You Girl!: Staging Impersonations of Race in American Cinema" looks at the intersection of gender and race in several key films of the classic Hollywood cinema, from Joseph Von Sternberg's "Blonde Venus" (1932) to Douglas Sirk's "Imitation of Life" (1959).

Mr. Kenyada's Neighborhood - A Tribute Love, Lena Horne His friends called my Dad... Buddy.
But then, they never got on his baddd side. I remember my Dad being from the old school of black parenthood. A strict disciplinarian - promoting education, respect for elders and strangers, and a strong work ethic. As the saying goes, Dad would joke around a little,
but he ...did ...not ...Play. During one of his rare lighter moments, after having demonstrated for his two sons a dance called the Lindy Hop (it looked like what was later called The Hustle), Dad was remembering stories from "back in the day". In one particular story about his military days during WWII, he told us about how entertainer Lena Horne was Da Bomb of the Day, and how he had a crush on her since he met her when she toured military bases. He told us he had danced with Ms. Horne at a servicemen's club at Ft. Lee, Virginia. My brother and I looked at each other, and then back at him. "Yeah, Dad, sure, you danced with Lena Horne, riiiiight."
He just smiled and winked at us.

LENA HORNE
One Gorgeous Actress/Singer and The First True African-American Star!
Lena Calhoun Horne was born on June 30, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. In her biography, she stated that on the day she was born, her father was in the midst of a card game trying to get money to pay the hospital costs. Her parents, ultimately, divorced while she was still a toddler. Her mother left later in order to find work in the acting field and Lena was left in the care of her grandparents. When Lena was seven, her mother returned and the two traveled the state where she was enrolled in numerous schools. For a time, Lena was, also, enrolled in schools in Florida, Georgia, and Ohio. Later she was to return to Brooklyn. She quit school when she was 14 and got her first stage job, dancing and later singing at the famed Cotton Club in Harlem when she was 16. The Cotton Club was a theater in which black performers played before white audiences. (The Cotton Club was immortalized in the film of the same name in 1984.) She was in good hands at the club, especially when people such as Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington took her under their wing and helped her over the rough spots in the world of show business. Before long, Lena's singing was playing before packed houses. If Lena Horne had never made a movie, her music career would have been enough to have left her a legend in the entertainment industry, but films were icing on the cake. After a few appearances on Broadway, Hollywood did come calling.

Horne, 1965 in full LENA CALHOUN HORNE (b. June 30, 1917, Brooklyn, N.Y., U.S.), black American performer, a versatile singer and actress who first came to fame in the 1940s. She was an advocate of the Civil Rights Movement and of women's rights. Horne was born to a family of scholars, activists, and performers. Her beauty helped to win her a spot as a dancer in the Cotton Club in Harlem, New York City, and by age 18 she was touring as a singer with popular bands. In the 1940s she launched her film career, appearing in Cabin in the Sky Stormy Weather Till the Clouds Roll By Death of a Gunfighter (1969), and The Wiz (1978). One of her first recordings, Lena Horne at the Waldorf-Astoria (1957) was a long-running bestseller, and her first featured performance on Broadwayin the musical Jamaica (1957)won her a New York Drama Critics Poll Award for 1958. When her one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, made its debut on Broadway in 1981, critics lauded it as her masterpiece and hailed her with many awards, including a special Tony award, two Grammy awards for the original cast album, and New York City's highest cultural award, the Handel Medallion. In 1984 she was recognized at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C., for her contributions to the arts.

Horne's mother did return to take her daughter on tour with her. Eventually, her mother remarried and the family returned to New York where Horne attended high school. But financial difficulties forced her to quit school and obtain a position as a chorus dancer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, New York. She was hired for her beauty, but she worked diligently to improve her singing by taking lessons and she became known for her sultry voice.
