He said the cause of death was pneumonia. A towering star of stage, screen, TV and radio, Hope was also a tireless supporter of American soldiers, taking countless tours abroad entertaining American and British troops, from World War II to Operation Desert Storm. The U.S. Navy honored Hope with the christenings of the USS Bob Hope , a sea lifter-class vessel, and the Spirit of Bob Hope , a cargo plane. President Bush reacted to early reports of Hope's death, saying the nation had lost a "great citizen." "We mourn the passing of Bob Hope. Bob Hope made us laugh. He lifted our spirits," Bush said.

I'll update this list routinely, with new entries at the top. Check back when you can for more. (And feel free to e-mail me with links to additional military bloggers). Without further ado... update 8: I almost forgot a fellow MilBlogger stationed in Germany. This young lady is an Air Force Airman, working for a living for God and country far from home and family. On Christmas. And she requests comments for her friend Greg, who isn't feeling the spirit. Careful though, she's a homicidal maniac update 7: Its always contrast.

How Bob Hope Learned About The Power Of Advertising A Lesson He Never Forgot By Bob Mills During my 15-year tenure writing gags, sketches and parody lyrics for Bob Hope, I spent many hours with him on the road taping TV specials. An inherent and unavoidable byproduct of television and movie production is down time and, whenever we had a few minutes between takes, Bob enjoyed regaling us with stories from his early days in show business funny things that happened to him in vaudeville, on radio and during his Paramount Studio road picture days with Bing. One May, we were at West Point taping a two-hour special for the cadets. During a lull in the shooting as we sat in his Winnebego waiting for his next call, he told us a story which I think better than any other sums up the awesome power of the mass media to sell consumer products. And it's even more true today than it was in the period now so long ago when the events he spoke of took place. Here's the story he told us: Following glowing reviews in Broadway's "Big Broadcast of 1938," the Pepsodent toothpaste company offered Bob his own radio show to replace their sponsorship of the popular "Amos 'n' Andy." Bob assembled a crack staff of veteran radio writers, directors and actors that included announcer Bill Goodwin, orchestra leader Skinnay Ennis (soon replaced by Les Brown) and a walrus-mustached, former trombonist named Jerry Colonna. The show, which debuted on September 27, 1938, had all the earmarks of a hit, but unexpectedly got off to a rocky start. It took ten or twelve weeks of tinkering with the format before Hope was satisfied with the laughs he was getting from the studio audience (the show would remain on the air for 20 years).

    Hope Jokes
Memories from a former Bob Hope writer. By Doug Gamble s someone who was honored to have been among Bob Hope's last group of writers, working on his TV monologues and personal appearances from 1983 until he stopped performing a decade later, I wouldn't be surprised if we receive a phone call from him in a day or two. He'll have settled into his new surroundings by then, and he'll want us to write a few jokes about the place. He might start out his monologue, "It took a lot of courage for me to arrive here with my golf clubs. Imagine me showing St. Peter I'm a golfer, and then trying to convince him I never told a lie." And I wouldn't be surprised if he's planning to team up with Bing Crosby for The Road to Heaven While there's little I can add to the eloquent tributes to Hope's life and career that have been pouring forth since news of his death, I can observe that if his career had been legislation it would be known as "The Comedy Writers' Full Employment Act." He had a special bond with his writers and hired dozens through the years, not because he couldn't be funny on his own, but because he had so much respect for his audiences he wanted as many jokes as possible to choose from.

From the headquarters of General Patton to the shores of Korea, Hope's USO entertainers followed the troops, and sometimes even got ahead of them. Editor's note: During a swing through Europe in World War II, Hope and his merry band of entertainers were summoned to the headquarters of General George S. Patton, where they ate dinner with the general and put on an impromptu show for him. After the show, General Patton made a strange request: would Hope put in a good word for him when Hope returned to do his radio show in the States? Hope, perplexed, agreed, then arrived in the lobby of his hotel, where war correspondent Ernie Pyle was waiting for him. "How'd you enjoy your visit with the general?" Pyle asked Hope. CONCLUSION "It was wonderful," I said. "How do you like that heel?" he asked. It rocked me back on my own heels. "Don't you know what happened in the hospital? He slapped a wounded soldier," Ernie said. Then he told me the story. For the first time I understood the reason for the general's peculiar request.

While performing in Roberta, his first major role on Broadway, our hero meets a beautiful young singer named Dolores Reade. PART II. One night while I was in Roberta, my pal, George Murphy, who was doing a fine job of specialty capering in the show, invited me to the Lambs Club. We downed a couple of beers, and he said, "I want you to hear a girl sing. Her name is Dolores Reade. She sings at the Vogue Club." We went over to the Vogue, on 57th Street. It was a little club Bea Lillie had opened. She didn't own it, but she'd opened it. And I heard this girl sing. She had a low, husky voice and she sang somewhat in the style of Marion Harrissoft and sweet, not a shouter. She sang "It's Only a Paper Moon" and "Did You Ever See a Dream Walking?" That did it, and I asked if I could take her out. Once we were alone, she asked, "You're in Roberta?"

Where there's Hope (Bob, that is), there's laughter on DVD
"The Best of Bob Hope" celebrates 50 years of the quipster's career in time for his 100th birthday.
Probably nobody has ever sparked so much laughter during the past 100 years as Bob Hope , the British-born comedian who became the quintessential American quipster. Hope was a master of one-liners and rat-a-tat-tat timing. He could rattle off a routine and build from snickers to chuckles to outright guffaws within a matter of seconds.

Bob Franken: Rising water and high hopes in Davenport
Franken CNN National Correspondent Bob Franken has been covering the floods in the upper Midwest for the past few days. Q: Davenport, Iowa , decided against building a wall along the riverbank after the last round of flooding. How is it holding up? FRANKEN: They decided way back when that they really wanted to enjoy the beauty of the riverfront and enjoy the millions of dollars in tourist money that came with it. Right now, the beauty of the river is being marred by the 23-foot- high sea wall that has been constructed out of sandbags, as civilians and National Guard troops prepare frantically to try to wall off the Mississippi. There's one little problem: They built it at that height based on a belief that the crest would be about 21 feet. The latest prediction is that it would be about 22 1/2 feet Tuesday night, so that's cutting it very, very close.
