Jewish journalist Mark Pinsky's book opens with an introduction by the Archbishop of Wales praising the spiritual undertones of the world famous comedy soap, "The Simpsons is one of the most subtle pieces of propaganda around in the cause of sense, humility and virtue."
The Most Reverend Rowan Williams is clearly a big Simpsons fan. Also covered in the book are Hindu shopkeeper Apu and the Judaism of Krusty the Clown but Homer's dubious Christian zeal has been praised alongside Marge's undoubted faith.

Nobody has yet mentioned what is probably the oldest living oral tradition - the Vedic tradition of India. To this day pandits still learn the Vedas by heart. Even though the texts were written down in ancient times and may be used for reference, the actual transmission of the texts is usually still purely oral. Entire texts of great length are still passed down orally from father to son, sometimes for centuries in the same family. The texts are written in metre and are chanted to various melodies. Perfect pronunciation and precise accuracy are regarded as essential. Often two or more pandits chant in unison, so that any error by one of them would immediately be obvious. Scholars disagree about the age of the Vedas, but there is little doubt that they are pre-Homeric. So we still have in the modern world a living, continuous, unbroken tradition of oral recitation, which was already old when Homer was composing his epics.

Review of The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark
(by Dennis R. MacDonald; Yale University, 2000)
by
Richard Carrier
An Incredible Book This is an incredible book that must be read by everyone with an interest in Christianity. MacDonald's shocking thesis is that the Gospel of Mark is a deliberate and conscious anti-epic, an inversion of the Greek "Bible" of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey
Background and Purpose of Mark MacDonald begins by describing what scholars of antiquity take for granted: anyone who learned to write Greek in the ancient world learned from Homer. Homer was the textbook. Students were taught to imitate Homer, even when writing on other subjects, or to rewrite passages of Homer in prose, using different vocabulary. Thus, we can know for certain that the author of Mark's Gospel was thoroughly familiar with the works of Homer and well-trained in recasting Homeric verse into new prose tales. The status of Homer in basic education remained throughout antiquity, despite the fact that popular and intellectual sentiment had been sternly against the ethics and theology of his epics since the age of Classical Greece. Authors from Plato (400 b.c.e) to Plutarch (c. 100 c.e.) sought to resolve this problem by "reinterpreting" Homer as allegory, or by expunging or avoiding offensive passages, neither of which was a perfect solution.

Mark Heard
Cornbread Anniversary
Homer Winslow was the foreman at Spinks Company . Irene, his wife, and Mike, his son, also worked there. Spinks Company was rife with nepotism, and it usually worked out pretty well. They often referred to each other as having a last name of Bedloe (I assume a family joke). Irene almost always brought lunch for the three of them. Often between time pressures and the resultant stress-induced problems such as Homer's ulcer, one, two, or all three of them wouldn't feel like eating or feel they could take time to eat. In those cases, Irene offered the food to others. Many was the day Mark or I let the others go off for Big Macs and chowed down on some excellent home cooking. Irene was a great cook, but her cornbread was incredible. I'm kind of ambivalent about most cornbread, but I never turned down Irene's. Irene always made cakes for other employees' birthdays - Mark asked for a cornbread on his, and I did the same for my "going away" cake. The rest of the shop was about evenly divided between thinking we were nuts, and thinking we were pretty smart. Nothing new there! Well before he left Spinks Company, Mark decided that the next major anniversary Homer and Irene celebrated should be their

Skeptical Views of Christianity and the Bible
Joseph Francis Alward "Everything in the Old Testament is perverted and distorted into meanings never intended by the writers. The practice which the writers of the books employ is not more false than it is absurd. They state some trifling case of the person they call Jesus Christ, and then cut out a sentence from some passage of the OT and call it a prophecy of that case. But when the words thus cut out are restored to the places they are taken from, and read with the words before and after them, they give the lie to the New Testament." Thomas Paine
