HOMER, ARETE , AND SOCIOPATHY
An interesting suggestion in Alisair MacIntyre's History of Ethics : Part of the problem for the Greek polis in the Periclean Age was that the culturally central image of human excellence was that of the Homeric hero, whose arete ("virtue") consisted in being a brave, ruthless and successful fighter and plotter. But that sort of relentlessly self-assertive behavior, in the context of a political way of life, is sociopathy. Place Achilles in Athens, and you have Alkibiades. If that's right, it puts a different spin on the famous suggestion in Book II Republic that the city-in-speech being constructed will need to edit its Homer, or at least the version of Homer to be read by the young. Sponsors say initiative vote misses mark
BY CARLY BOSSERT
Staff Writer
A "yes" vote in the upcoming special election will not have the result they had intended, say the initiative's sponsors. Instead of replacing a section of the large retail and wholesale development standard ordinance, the new language will be inserted into a different section of the text, leaving the 35,000-square-foot retail cap intact. The intent of their petition has been clear ‹ to exchange the 35,000-square-foot cap for a larger 66,000-square-foot footprint ‹ said sponsor Ray Kranich. Although it seems the recent interpretation is true, he said, that was not the aim. If necessary the sponsors will introduce new initiatives until their goal is achieved. "They all know what the intent was," said Bruce Turkington, manager of the local branch of Spenard Builder's Supply and the alternate sponsor for the petition. "I think the intent is what we have to go with at this point." At its next meeting, the council will discuss an ordinance proposing a cap change to around 45,000 square feet.

About Counting the Omer n the second day of Passover in ancient times, our ancestors brought the first sheaf of barley (amounting to a measure called "an omer") reaped that season as an offering to God. From that day, they began counting the 49 days to Shavuot, when they would celebrate the beginning of the wheat harvest by offering the loaves made of the first wheat. Even after the Temple was destroyed and offerings were no longer brought, they continued to count the days from Passover to Shavuot in accordance with the biblical injunction (Lev. 23:15). Thus our ancestors linked Passover and Shavuot as occasions for thanking God for the fruits of the field. We, too, thank God for the renewal of life which nature proclaims at this season. However, as Passover and Shavuot acquired historical significance, their linkage through the counting of the intervening days took on new meaning. Passover celebrates the liberation from Egypt, and Shavuot celebrates the receiving of Torah at Sinai. By counting the omer, we symbolically connect liberation with the idea of Torah. Counting the omer is an exercise in the discipline of mindfulness. Counting each of the days of the omer reminds us that all of our days are numbered, and it is our responsibility to make each day count.

In this groundbreaking book, Dennis R. MacDonald offers an entirely new view of the New Testament gospel of Mark. The author of the earliest gospel was not writing history, nor was he merely recording tradition, MacDonald argues. Close reading and careful analysis show that Mark borrowed extensively from the Odyssey and the Iliad and Dennis R. MacDonald is John Wesley Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Claremont School of Theology and co-director of the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity at the Claremont Graduate University. He is the author of Christianizing Homer and The Legend and the Apostle. back to top

Reviews
In this groundbreaking book, Dennis R. MacDonald presents an entirely new view of the New Testament gospel of Mark. The author of the earliest gospel was neither writing history nor recording tradition, MacDonald argues. Rather, he was composing a prose anti-epic, borrowing extensively from the Odyssey and the Iliad and presenting Jesus as a suffering hero modeled after but far superior to traditional Greek heroes.

Play review - Mark Homer's 'Boxed'
By Larry Jaffee
LONDON-Of course, EastEnders fans will forever associate their favourite Albert Square characters with the actors who play them. in some cases, it might be difficult to picture them in any other role, especially for us on this side of the Atlantic, who generally don't get see EastEnders alumni in other U.K. telly productions.
Yet most actors have higher aspirations than "a mere soap opera," whether that might be film, stage or Hollywood, and I don't mean to imply that EastEnders is some lower form of drama. For better or worse, it's perceived that way in its native land.
In any case, Mark Homer is best known for his portrayal of "Tony Hills," according to the programme for his play Boxed, staged this past late spring at West London's prestigious fringe theatre Riverside Studios and his first major acting project outside of EastEnders.
In Boxed, Homer plays the former boyfriend named Chris, who abruptly pops in on his ex-girlfriend Suzie (Carolina Giammetta) six months after their relationship ended because he was unfaithful with another woman.
Chris seems to be in a bit better shape than Tony, the sexually confused, young twenty-something who eventually comes to grips with his homosexuality. But Tony's vocal inflections and occasional looks of neediness show up in Chris. Yet you never somehow picture that this is Tony trying to win back Tiffany. No, this is clearly another character, albeit hetero, with his own hangups.

Rating: Superseded by Willcock's work I have a great sentimental attachment to Benner's Selections, as it was with this textbook that I first read Homer in Greek. I loved the selections, etc.! However, as students have later come to me with their Homer reading projects, I've placed this side-by-side with the notes in M.M. Willcock's "Iliad of Homer: Books I-XII" and "Iliad of Homer: Books XIII-XXIV," and it just doesn't measure up. Willcock's work is fresher (1978/1984 vs. 1903), and he gives better and fuller help with Homer's language. (Also, he happens to be the more sensitive reader of Homer's poetry.)
