This feat has only been achieved by seventeen players in the history of Major League Baseball. These 17 bashers have reached this milestone a total of 27 times, with Babe Ruth holding the title of "Sultan of Swat" having hit fifty during four separate seasons. Mark McGwire with his record 70 has accomplished the task 3 times, and if healthy should challenge Ruth's mark of 4 this season. Jimmy Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Ralph Kiner, Willie Mays and now Ken Griffey Jr have each done it twice. Griffey hitting exactly 56 two years in a row! McGwire and Ruth have also done it in consecutive seasons, with McGwire achieving three in a row in 1998. With seven active players having already achieved 50 homer status, and with phenoms like Juan Gonzales Jeff Bagwell and Frank Thomas knocking at the door, more 50 homer seasons can be expected in the near future. Sixty homers became the new mark of excellence during the 1998 season with both Sosa and McGwire achieving those totals and McGwire hitting an unbelievable 70.

Her catalogue is a landmark in Homer studies. It puts Homer in his true relationship to illustration, to other American art and to the European and English examples he followed, from Ruskin to Millet ; its vivacity of argument matches that of the paintings. Cooper has brought together some two hundred watercolors-almost a third of Homer's known output. It is a wholly delectable show, and it makes clear why watercolor, in its special freshness and immediacy, gave Homer access to moments of vision he did not have in the weightier, slower diction of oils. "You will see, in the future I will live by my watercolors," Homer once remarked, and he was almost right. He came to the medium late: he was thirty-seven and a mature artist. A distinct air of the Salon, of the desire for a "major" utterance that leads to an overworked surface, clings to some of the early watercolors-in particular, the paintings of

Who Was the Young
Man at the Tomb ?
Joseph Francis Alward Several hundred years before the first gospel story was written, by Mark, Homer wrote The Odyssey , the story of the adventures of the heroic figure, Odysseus, and his companions. In several articles based on the book, The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark , by Dennis R. MacDonald, I've provided considerable evidence (most of it MacDonald's) that Mark borrowed extensively not the detailed plots, but the rough, very broad outlinesfrom Homer's stories to create fictional stories about Jesus. In this article, I will show what MacDonald showsthat the mysterious young man at Jesus' tomb is patterned after a young man named Elpenor in Homer's book, and that Mark intended for the reader to recognize this fact.
Mary Magdalene, Mary mother of James, and
Salome at Jesus' tomb.

Home Page The Odyssey Online Below I will compare the Homeric and Markan tales of a man grieving over his coming trip to Hades. The Homeric story tells of Odysseus learning that he and his men must go to Hades, bitterly lamenting his fate, waking his men, the flight of a young man's soul to Hades, Odysseus and his men's visit to Hades, their surprising encounter with the young man's ghost, and the ghost telling the men to go to its body on Circe's island. Cannibalism in Homer and Mark's Gospel
Joseph Francis Alward
This is another in a continuing series of analyses of claims in The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark , by Dennis R. MacDonald, that the earliest gospel writer, Mark, got the material for his stories about Jesus from Homer, who wrote his stories 800 years before Mark wrote his.
MacDonald argues that Mark's story about Jesus offering bread representing his body to be eaten by the apostles was adapted from Homer's story about Odysseus and his men's experience with a cannibal.

Driftwood, 1909
Once created, the wave or the arc of a wave begins its journey through the sea. Countless vibrations precede it, countless vibrations follow after. It approaches the continent, swings into the coast line, courses ashore, breaks, dissolves, is gone. The innermost water it last inhabited flow back in marbly foam to become a body to another beat, and to be again flung down. So it goes night and day , and will go till the secret heart of earth strikes out its last slow beat and the last wave dissolves upon the last forsaken shore. 31. Homer Or Not Homer? Mark 435-41 In Recent Study

http://metalab.unc.edu/GMark/afr/HomerorNotHomer.htm
Homer or Not Homer? Mark 4:35-41 in Recent Study by Douglas W. Geyer (Evanston, IL) dgeyer@aol.com From a paper read at the October 14, 2000 meeting of the Chicago Society for Biblical Research.
This year, we have been presented with a new book that generously reviews the Homeric epics and the Gospel of Mark. It's author, Dennis MacDonald, promotes a method to determine the origin of many of the stories in the Gospel of Mark, proposing a hypothesis about why and when these stories were composed in the way they are. His method consists of an examination of Greek epic poetry for the literary origin of the narrative plots and characters in Mark. I will be criticizing his work in this paper, but when all is said and done, I do take the position that comparison of the Gospel of Mark to Homeric materials can indeed produce good results, just not the kind that MacDonald seeks. We should indeed keep Homer in reach and in mind, because it makes for good criticism and interpretation. But, I think that it would be unsatisfying to follow MacDonald for very far down the road he goes, and we do well not to get sidetracked by it. Today I want to outline that road, explore a good example of it from MacDonald, note my disagreements with it, and suggest what might be done differently. MacDonald proposes that the in the aftermath of the Roman siege upon Jerusalem, there was a compelling need to explain why Jesus had not successfully warned Christians to flee before the Roman devastation. In his view, the destruction of Jerusalem is the primary problem addressed in the narrative we now know as the Gospel of Mark.
