Alfred Hitchcock
Filmography Awards Teresa Wright on Hitchcock Bibliography ... REBECCA The Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, began his movie career as an inter-titles designer for silent films in Britain and had just begun directing when sound films were introduced in the late 1920s. Though his early British films were successful, it was the films Hitchcock made after coming to Hollywood in 1939 that made him one of the most recognizable and commercially successful film directors of all time. Oddly enough, though he was nominated for five Best Director Oscars, Hitchcock never won the prize. However, he did received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1968. In his eleventh film, BLACKMAIL (1929), the first talking picture made in Britain, Hitchcock began making now-famous cameo appearances in each of his films. In BLACKMAIL, he can be seen on the subway being harassed by a little boy. In THE 39 STEPS (1935), one of Hitchcock's most successful films from his early British career, featuring Robert Donat and Madeline Carroll, Hitchcock made his cameo appearance as a litter bug outside a London music hall.

! Anoche soñé que volvía a Manderley........!

To mark 100 years since this event, and to commemorate the director's link with the area, 17 mosaics have been installed in the entrance corridors of Leytonstone tube station. They were made in vitreous glass tesserae, using the reverse method, by Greenwich Mural Workshop . The work required some 80,000 tiles, took seven months to complete, and the final installation took place during April 2001. Amongst the scenes from films, there are also images of Leytonstone, portraits of Hitchcock and even trademark cameo roles. Leytonstone is on the Central underground line, five stops east of Liverpool Street - go see them if you can! Alfred Hitchcock was born to a working-class, Roman Catholic family in suburban London in 1899. After attending a Jesuit preparatory school, he entered the work force at age 14 by taking an office position at Henley Telegraph and Cable Company, where he remained employed until 1920. At age 21 Hitchcock took his first job in the movie business, where he worked until his death in 1980. Movies were still silent for the first nine years Hitchcock worked on them, and he got his start designing inter-titles in London. During his first six years, the young Hitchcock did a little bit of everything from art director to script writer to production manager to assistant director. Then in 1926 Hitchcock directed his first film, a thriller titled "The Lodger." Near the end of 1926, Hitchcock married Alma Reville, who also worked in the film industry. They remained married until Hitchcock’s death nearly 54 years later. Their union produced one child, a daughter named Patricia, who was born in 1928.

    Alfred Hitchcock
Hitchcock was the star and introducer of his long running TV series (1955 - 1966); he was a household name in the United States during this period, and for a considerable period after, due to reruns. He also appeared in the trailers for his films, was a guest on TV talk shows, and in general was a celebrity. Before Hitchcock, Cecil B. De Mille was host and frequent director of the Lux Radio Theater , a high quality series of the 1940's. It also made De Mille famous. Later De Mille hosted many of the trailers for his films, as well as appearing as himself in such films as Sunset Boulevard and Son of Paleface . Both of these men were much better known to the public, than any other directors who were not also actors (such as Orson Welles or Laurence Olivier). One suspects that De Mille was a role model for Hitchcock in these matters. Hitchcock's cameo appearances in his films are the visual equivalent of a signature. Hitchcock is a deeply visual director. These appearances perhaps constitute the real signing by Hitchcock of his films, rather than the verbal "directed by Alfred Hitchcock" that appears in the credits.

    118. Images - Hitchcock/Nabokov
Essay from Images Journal by James A Davidson comparing the work of the director with the Russian author.
    http://www.imagesjournal.com/issue03/features/hitchnab1.htm
Some Thoughts on Alfred Hitchcock and Vladimir Nabokov
by James A. Davidson I t is a tendency of criticism to try to shed light on the work of one artist by comparing and contrasting that artist's work to that of another. Alfred Hitchcock, for instance, is usually mentioned in the same breath with Cornell Woolrich, the literary 'master of suspense,' at least partly due to the fact that Hitchcock did such a memorable job bringing Woolrich's novella to the screen as Rear Window Lolita in 1962 based on Nabokov's screenplay). Alfred Appel, Jr. has described the world of Nabokov's novels as "Nabokov's Puppet Show," emphasizing the author's masterful control of artifice and imagination ; so too has recent Hitchcock criticism focused the director's uncanny ability to assert a strong authorial voice throughout virtually all of his films. Thus, it is not surprising that Hitchcock envisioned himself playing the emotions of his audience in a movie theater on a giant organ just as Nabokov, the puppet master, pulled the strings in his novels so brilliantly. I believe Nabokov's complex word play, parodic self-references and manipulation of language is the literary equivalent to Hitchcock's well-known mastery of "the language of cinematic images," which he discussed frequently in interviews.
While there were vast differences between the lives of Hitchcock and Nabokov, there were also some profound similarities that I feel shed some light on their careers and work. To begin with, Hitchcock and Nabokov came from substantially different backgrounds. Hitchcock's father was a London wholesale grocer and young Alfred grew up in a stable but distinctly middle class home. Nabokov's father was an intellectual, a member of Russia's ruling class and part of the provisional government first established after the revolution. Vladimir Nabokov grew up in a privileged environment that stressed academics (a colleague of Nabokov's father wrote of the baby Vladimir: "I had the impression that this would be an extremely abnormal upbringing in fatally over-abundant circumstances")

click the book for details "DeRosa describes the relationship in meticulous detail, providing fascinating evidence of the extreme care with which Hitchcock chose and worked with his writers." The New York Times Book Review "Collaboration is the key word in the subtitle to Steven DeRosa's intriguing book - key because it was never a word for which the master of suspense had any time. John Michael Hayes, the hitherto unsung hero of DeRosa's book, wrote four scripts for Hitchcock - To Catch a Thief The Trouble With Harry The Man Who Knew Too Much and Rear Window , this last, the film that sealed Hitch's highbrow reputation." ~ Sunday Times (London) more review s Alfred Hitchcock remains the most written about, and arguably the most influential of filmmakers. While there have been scores of articles, books and websites devoted to him, little attention has been given to the many writers who worked with Hitchcock throughout his career. The aim of this site is to do just that. Some have taken this to mean my aim is to damage the director's reputation. Nothing could be further from the truth. What you will find here is an unpretentious assessment of the work of Alfred Hitchcock and his writers. Appreciation, in most cases, but criticism, too, when warranted. And there are quite a few instances when criticism was warranted.
