(CNN) Alfred Hitchcock directed more than 60 films, producing and writing many of them. Yet if you're like the average filmgoer, you've only seen two or three "Psycho," probably, by which we mean the original and not last year's Gus Van Sant shot-for-shot remake; "The Birds," probably; and maybe "Vertigo," which seems to replay with frequency on cable movie channels. Long essay on Psycho, alfred hitchcock's seminal Oedipal nightmare.

nightmare revisited
page 1 of 6 BY ALAN VANNEMAN Psycho is one of the most famous movies ever made; the shower sequence depicting the murder of Marion Crane is quite possibly the most celebrated sequence in all of film. Yet it is easy to think of Psycho as nothing more than a contrived potboiler, held together by blatant deceits that prevent the audience from guessing the "secret" right off the bat. Compared to classically great films like Jean Renoir’s La Grande Illusion Les Enfants du Paradis Psycho may seem like little more than a malicious joke. But Hitchcock also believed that this picture of reality was as false as it was alluring. Within the conventions of popular melodrama, he explored themes more often linked to the avant garde than popular entertainment: loneliness, loss of identity, sexual ambiguity, passivity, voyeurism, the triumph of evil, and the oppressive weight of a dead past. Hitchcock explored these obsessions through an elaborate set of images and cinematic devices that he worked and reworked from film to film. Sometimes his treatment could be lifeless, and sometimes powerful. In 1948, for example, he bought the film rights to Rope

ALFRED HITCHCOCK

ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS
October 2, 1955 - June 1962
Host:
Alfred Hitchcock

The benign countenance of pudgy film director Alfred
Hitchcock welcomed viewers to stories of terror, horror,
suspense, and twisted endings for an entire decade.
His clipped British accent and catlike theme music
became television standbys as the series was seen on
two different networks and was later seen for years in
syndication. The stories would often appear to end with evil triumphant, in strict violation of the television code of ethics. This situation was always resolved following the last commercial, when Hitchcock would return to explain, in his deadpan sardonic way, what silly mistake or chance occurance had finally done the villan in. When the show was expanded to an hour in 1962, the title was changed to The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.
THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR September 1962 - May 10, 1965 Host: Alfred Hitchcock For one season on NBC, in the fall of 1985, five years after Hitchcock's death, the famous director acheived a unique distinction: he became the first person in history to return from the dead to host a new series.

Criminal schemes may depend on deception and crime stories may rely on judicious misdirection, but you won’t be misled here. We have twelve terrific stories for you to enjoy in our summer double issue, featuring some very interesting sleuths: Florida-based P.I. Bubba Simms returns in "Burnt Wood" by Mitch Alderman; intrepid P.I. Valerie Dymond sets up shop in Boston in "Divorce Work." by Ernest B. and Alice A. Brown; and Steve Hockensmith’s morose P.I., Larry Erie, is called to the zoo to handle a sensitive case in "Tricks." Detective Sergeant Cyrus Auburn investigates a death in a seminary in "Profit without Honor" by John H. Dirckx. And Cletis Johnston, the inimitable bondsman, finds out just who his competition is in "The Other Bondsman" by R.T. Lawton.
Citizens of the French Quarter of New Orleans in O’Neil De Noux’s historical "The Gorilla Murders" are terrorized by what they think they see. Two veterans argue over their memory of Vietnam in Scott Mackay’s "Numbers." Robert S. Levinson’s story "The Hit" cleverly plays on our preconception of certain stereotypes. Jaine Fenn’s "Paying for Rain" by Jaine Fenn takes a terrifying jaunt through the Andes. In "Twin Killing" by Norman Keifetz, a middle-aged scientist lives his dream of playing baseball—in Russia. Percy Spurlark Parker offers a short, twisty tale of family relations in "Uncle Harold."
