Norwegian Figure Skating Champion Sonja Henie
was born on April 8, 1912 in Oslo, Norway. She was an Olympic and World Champion figure skater who helped increase the popularity of competitive figure skating. She won the gold medal for figure skating at the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Winter Olympics. Henie started skating and dancing as a child. She won the first of ten consecutive world championships in 1927, and in 1928 her first Olympic gold medal at Saint Moritz, Switzerland. She dominated amateur women's figure skating for 10 years, winning her third Olympic gold medal at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, in 1936. Henie turned professional in the United States in 1936. In 1941, she became a citizen of the United States. She performed in popular ice shows into the 1950s, and made a number of successful films, which often featured her skating. She made ice skating television specials in the 1950s. Henie died on October 12, 1969. The Sonja show was playing The Baltimore Armory in 1952. While we were rehearsing for the show we watched a work crew erecting some extra bleacher seats. We noticed they were working very clumsily and didn't look very skilled but figured they knew what they were doing. Were we ever wrong! As the overature for the show began (around 8 PM) we heard a strange screeching sound and then a roar. The roar was the sound of a thousand seats, filled with people, crashing 18 feet to the floor! They were sitting in the bleachers that had been hastily built during our rehearsal! The screeching was the nails being pulled out of the wood!

Other Resources A fine all-around athlete, Henie competed in tennis, swimming, and skiing and she also studied ballet before she took up figure skating. The combination of grace and athleticism that she brought to the sport transformed skating into a popular spectacle. Henie won the Norwegian championship when she was ten years old and competed in her first Winter Olympics in 1924, two months before her twelfth birthday. She finished second in the world championships when she was thirteen, and then won the title ten years in a row, from 1927 through 1936. She's the only skater ever to win three Olympic title, in 1928, 1932, and 1936. Her first two Olympic victories came easily. Her fourth was much more difficult. Henie announced her intention to retire after the 1936 Winter Games and then found herself in a close contest with a young English skater, Cecilia Colledge. Henie won by just 3 points. Petite, blond, and button-nosed, Henie proved even more successful as a professional performer and businesswoman. She starred in her own show, the Hollywood Ice Revue, and in ten Twentieth Century-Fox movies. In her first full year as a professional, 1937, she earned more than $200,000. When she died of leukemia aboard an ambulance plane carrying her from Paris to Oslo in 1969, she was worth more than $47 million.

Henie, Sonja
Sonja Henie Pictorial Parade (1912-1969), athlete Born in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway, on April 8, 1912, Sonja Henie began skating when she was six years old. At the age of 10 she won the Norwegian national figure-skating championship, and at 11, in 1924, she competed in the Olympic Winter Games. In 1927 she won the world amateur championship for women, holding that title for 10 consecutive years. She won three gold medals in the Olympic Winter Games of 1928, 1932, and 1936. Trained in ballet, Henie incorporated some of its maneuvers into figure skating; she was largely responsible for converting a predictable series of colorless exercises into a spectacular and popular exhibition. Having turned professional after her Olympic triumph in 1936, she toured Europe and the Americas as the star of the Hollywood Ice Revue, and for a time (1951-52) she acted as producer of her ice shows. In 1936 she signed with 20th Century-Fox and starred in 10 popular films, beginning with One in a Million (1936/37) and Thin Ice (1937). From 1937 to 1945 she was one of the leading box-office attractions in the motion-picture industry.

Sonja Henie
Schaut mich an. Ich bin alt. Keiner liebt mich."

She was termed the "Pavlova of the ice," and her skating routine and glamourous demeanor helped to transform the sport permanently and increase its popularity. At the Winter Olympics in 1928, 1932 and 1936, she turned professional, touring Europe and America. (She was also ranked Norway's third best tennis player in her youth.) She starred in ten very popular Hollywood films and continued touring with the Hollywood Ice Revue which drew large crowds. She became an American citizen. Though her first two husbands were Americans, she moved back to Norway with her third husband, a Norwegian ship owner, where she founded a museum of modern art with her own collection of impressionist and postimpressionist art as its core.
