I Whitaker conducono la loro esistenza a Hartford, Connecticut, nell'osservanza delle regole sociali che sovrintendono alla comunità di cui fanno parte. Ma qualcosa romperà l'equilibrio. Prima di tutto un genere cinematografico che negli Usa ha avuto un periodo di fulgore grazie ad un regista europeo, Douglas Sirk, e un fenomeno che ha formato un immaginario facilmente isolabile e di grande forza comunicativa. In seconda istanza è un modo di conoscere il mondo e l'essere umano. Due dati strettamente intrecciati, senza dubbio, ma che Haynes distingue e rimescola in questo lavoro, tiene il piede in due staffe creando un certo disorientamento: se da un lato è il genere ad essere traumatizzato d'altra parte non si sminuisce il valore disturbante delle forze in atto. Ermeneutica era la parola. La consapevolezza del non-più-così-giovane regista è ben differente da quella coeniana (i fratelli) fatta di alambicchi ed ambiente sterile -loro unicità e grandezza- in cui elementi eterogenei vengono innestati secondo schemi e devianze tipicamente cinefili: la privilegiata casalinga Cathy, sposata con il sig. Magnatech (TV) Frank Whitaker, vede il proprio mondo improvvisamente fragile nonostante la cura delle apparenze. In questo è di fondamentale apporto l'incipit con la presentazione di un ambiente che sembra corredo un set perpetuo -un autunno sfolgorante nei colori di Ed Lachmann- in cui i bambini sono docili quanto basta ed il bacio del maritino di ritorno dal lavoro è il miglior premio per la perfezione della cena.

Se interesó por el cine desde chico y produjo su primer corto, The Suicide (1978), en la escuela secundaria. Estudió en la Universidad Brown, donde realizó Assasins: A Film Concerning Rimbaud, su primer largometraje. Después de graduarse en Arte, Semiótica y Cine se trasladó a Nueva York y formó la productora Apparatus -con Christine Vachon (productora de Yo le disparé a Andy Warhol ) y un amigo-, con la que empezó a producir cine experimental para otros directores. En 1987 realizó Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, un docudrama de 43 minutos sobre la cantante que falleció por anorexia. El trabajo le valió un juicio de Richard Carpenter, por lo que la obra debió ser retirada de los cines. En 1991 realizó Poison , sobre textos de Jean Genet, que se convirtió en el film más importante del nuevo cine gay por sus referencias a la homosexualidad y al amor en los tiempos del sida y recibió el Premio del Jurado del Festival de Sundance, la meca del cine independiente. Home Lontano dal paradiso Regia: Todd Haynes Titolo originale: Far from Heaven Interpreti: Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, Patricia Clarkson E' un approccio molto intellettuale quello di Todd Haynes nel nuovo lungometraggio "Far from heaven". Presenta infatti alcuni dei piu' classici e saccheggiati temi cinematografici e li ripropone facendo il verso ai film di Douglas Sirk degli anni cinquanta. Quelli tutti emozioni contratte, foglie autunnali in Technicolor, gonne a palloncino, cappellini impossibili, sorrisi di facciata, villette a due piani immerse nel verde, torte di mele appena sfornate. Le apparenze ovviamente ingannano, la vera felicita' non e' quella che si ostenta, diventa quello che sei: il cinema ha sempre parteggiato per una liberta' di pensiero e di costumi, forse proprio per dare al pubblico la possibilita' di vedere realizzato, in un gioco un po' perverso e frustrante, cio' che la quotidianita' negava. E cosi' la moglie perfetta Cathy Whitaker, sposata al marito perfetto Frank Whitaker, deve fare i conti con l'urgenza delle pulsioni. Il marito preferisce i giovanotti e lei si ritrova innamorata del sensibile giardiniere nero. Due dei massimi tabu' dei perbenisti anni cinquanta, quello razziale e quello sessuale, vengono quindi affrontati nel film di Haynes attraverso una rilettura post-moderna. E' curioso come la novita' sia nel recupero, ma riciclare con pacatezza e intelligenza permette di attualizzare il messaggio. Julianne Moore, giustamente premiata a Venezia per la sua interpretazione, si conferma una delle attrici piu' brave della sua generazione. Perfetta nel mostrarsi perfetta e con un sorriso di disarmante tragicita'.
