Upcoming Programs Special Events Links ... County Home Page DOWN THE WINROW - Tips for hay buyers Every horse owner will be glad to see to see the spring and summer arrive. This has been a tough year to find an adequate supply of good quality hay. Wet, cold weather has kept many horses inside at least for a good portion of the day. Horse owners have had to stretch their hay supply to the limit. With haying just around the corner, here are a few tips to help insure an adequate supply of good quality hay: • Find a reliable hay grower that produces the kind of hay you like. Once you find one stick with him. You can shop around and maybe get a cheaper price but are you sure you are getting the best quality hay for the money? • If you are looking for a new supplier take the time to ask a few questions about the product he is selling. How long has he been growing hay? Does he harvest hay from well-maintained fields? In other words are his fields fertilized properly and relatively weed free. Does he have the equipment to harvest hay quickly to maintain its quality? It does not have to be the newest equipment but it should allow him to harvest in a timely manner. After a brief conversation it will be evident if he knows what he is doing. • Do not hesitate to go out and look at the field. Do not buy hay sight unseen unless you are dealing with a reputable grower. If you go out and look at the field and it is full of weed and brambles maybe you should consider another supplier.

@import url(../../../css/bfi_global.css); Hay, Will (1888-1949) Actor A comic genius who created a genuinely original persona which worked variations on the tattered, shifty 'professional', whether teacher (Boys Will Be Boys (1935), Good Morning, Boys! (1937), Ghost of St Michael's (1941)), barrister (My Learned Friend (1943)), prison governor (Convict 99 (1939)) or stationmaster (Oh, Mr Porter! (1937), perhaps his masterpiece). In whatever circumstances, he was always required to deceive both superiors and inferiors, the latter proving sharper at detecting the radical incompetence beneath his seedy dignity. Accompanied by fat boy Graham Moffatt and toothless old codger Moore Marriott in half a dozen films for Gainsborough, directed usually by Frenchman Marcel Varnel or American William Beaudine, he created a comic oeuvre as endearing and enduring as any in British cinema. When he went to Ealing in 1941, he co-directed (with Basil Dearden) as well as starring, and in another Ealing film, The Big Blockade (d. Charles Frend, 1942) he broke with his baffled inefficiency to play a straight role. In private life, he was apparently a very serious man with a profound interest in astronomy, he published

@import url(../../../css/bfi_global.css); Will Hay The music-hall performer who became a much-loved big-screen comedy star Music hall star Will Hay became a major screen comedian in the late 1930s in partnership with veteran character actor Moore Marriott and the young Graham Moffatt. On stage, Hay specialised in portraying inept schoolmasters who know far less than their pupils. Several films cast him in this role, including Boys Will Be Boys (d. William Beaudine, 1935) and Good Morning, Boys! (d. Marcel Varnel, 1937). In Windbag the Sailor (d. Beaudine, 1937), which Hay co-scripted, he played a braggart forced to take charge of an unseaworthy ship. For the first time he was teamed with Marriott and Moffatt to form a trio who bicker among themselves but unite against outsiders. The rich interplay between these contrasting performers began a series of immensely popular Gainsborough-produced comedies, in which Hay portrayed a bungling authority figure with Marriott and Moffatt as his assistants. Oh, Mr. Porter! (d. Varnel, 1937) made Hay a stationmaster in northern Ireland ; Convict 99 (d. Varnel, 1938) had his schoolmaster mistaken for both a prisoner and a prison governor; in Old Bones of the River (d. Varnel, 1939), he was a missionary educating African pagans; in Ask A Policeman (d. Varnel, 1939), a village police sergeant; and in "Where's That Fire?" (d. Varnel, 1939), the head of a local fire brigade.

High hay prices are a major consideration for sheep producers. Unless one can find hay that is reasonable in price, the only option in reducing hay cost is to feed less hay. Strategies to achieve this goal will be discussed.

    Dealing With High Hay Prices
This article first appeared in Indiana Sheep Tales in 1997, Vol. 30:3. by Mike Neary
    Extension Sheep Specialist
Purdue University Hay prices for the winter of 1996/1997 were two to three times more expensive than most years. It appears that many areas of the eastern cornbelt will again have very high hay prices in 1997/1998. It has been suggested by some that work closely in the forages area that hay prices could reach $200 to $250 per ton for the coming winter. Hay prices this high certainly are a major financial consideration for sheep producers, whether they have large commercial flocks or just a handful of sheep as a part-time enterprise. Even if producers raise their own hay and their cost of production is well below the market value, if they feed this homegrown hay to sheep, they will be losing a substantial opportunity to sell this hay at a high price. Unless one can find hay that is reasonable in price, the only option in reducing hay cost is to feed less hay. Strategies to achieve this goal will be discussed in the remainder of this article. Methods to reduce hay usage 1) Have hay tested for nutritional value Whether purchased or homegrown, it will be very important this year to get a laboratory analysis of a representative sample of hays. Not only is hay expected to be in short supply, it is likely to be quite variable in quality. Knowing the nutritional value of hays will allow the most effective utilization in a sheep nutrition program.

In his second film RADIO PARADE OF 1935 there was a performance from Ted Ray. Will's third film DANDY DICK saw the introduction of Moore Marriot, who would later go on to star with Hay in several other films, notably Oh,Mr Porter! Convict 99 and Ask a Policeman. The fifth film of Hay's WINDBAG THE SAILOR saw Graham Moffat joining Moore Marriot for the first time and this partnership with Will lasted for 6 films and turned out to be one of the most famous in British film history. Hay's tenth film HEY HEY USA saw the American film star Edgar Kennedy join him in a attempt to get Will accepted by the American cinemagoers. Roddy McDowall played the pestering boy. The thirteenth film was WHERE'S THAT FIRE? which saw a youthful Charles Hawtrey, later of Carry On fame play a most amusing cameo as a schoolboy know it all, who proceeds to cause havoc amongst a crowd of people watching with great delight at Hay, Moffatt and Marriott trying to put up their new fireman's pole. He was self-educated and fluent in German, French, Italian, Latin and Afrikaans. However, his stage and screen character was one of incompetence. In December 1888, Hay was born in Stockton on Tees (in the north of England) to a well-off family, far removed from showbusiness; his father was an engine fitter, his mother active in local politics. Whilst Hay was still a boy, his family moved to Lowestoft, then to Hemel Hempstead, then London, then back up north to Manchester just as Hay was finishing school. In the early twenties, Hay changed the name of his school master act from

He has left his mark on some of the most significant social and cultural movements of the twentieth century, from trade unionism to New Age spirituality. But it is Harry Hay's role in launching the Lesbian / Gay liberation movement that has earned him a place in history. As early as 1948 Harry Hay began pursuing his vision of forming an organization, the Mattachine Society, devoted to the welfare of Gay people. Hay was the first to propose the idea of Gay men and Lesbians as a cultural minority, the very basis of the Gay movement today. For the last fifty years, he has grappled with each new wave of cultural and political thought and synthesized agonizing contradictions from spirituality to Marxism, from art to politics. This first collection of Hay's own words speeches, papers, and interviews offers invaluable insight into the vision of one man who made it possible for millions to live in freedom and with self-respect.

Come close, little ones, and hear our bedtime tale . . . Once upon a time, there was a woman. In the fall, she loved to go outside and feel the wind. In the winter, she loved to go outside and play in the snow. And in the spring, she would go outside, but her throat would itch, her eyes would get puffy, her nose would run, her sinuses would clog, and she'd get nasal drip. So she locked herself up in her house, and never came out again. The moral of the story: hay fever bites. Living with hay fever can be extremely difficult - when you're having trouble doing something as simple as breathing , you know that you're in for a long spring and summer. Yet most of us don't live anywhere near a farm . . . so where does the hay fever come from? It has often been noted (by people who like to note things) that hay fever is not a fever at all, nor does it have anything to do with hay. Hay fever, a.k.a. rose fever, is medically designated as "
