THE DIVINE COMEDY "Absent Friends" Things have changed for The Divine Comedy in the 14 years since Dante’s epic poem inspired a young lad from Northern Ireland into calling his fledgling group the same name. Band members have come and gone, and main man Neil Hannon is now all that remains. Always the heart and soul of the outfit, he has developed a strong following over the years. However the prevailing spirit of his music is of lyrics that are prophetically succinct and sharply sardonic to the author, but can lack the same insight when heard from the other side of the fence. Those who ‘get it’ are overwhelmed by his witty insight, whilst others just think that Hannon’s biggest fan is himself. Hannon comes from Enniskillen and started a band with two friends from the same town. They moved to London and released a mini-album 'Fanfare for the Comic Muse' in 1990 and then promptly split up. His bandmates went to university whilst Neil returned home, but retained the distinctive band name. He spent the next 18 months living in his parents' attic, sleeping during the day, watching old movies and writing music at night. The songs eventually evolved into two albums. The first of these, 'Liberation' was released in 1993 and received some glowing praise from the music press - though was hardly a commercial success.

The Divine Comedy in New York City
originally published on SPINonline
This is perhaps why the Divine Comedy's April 18th show at Fez in New York City came a such a delicious surprise. With this engaging and captivating set, frontman Neil Hannon and pianist Joby Talbot seemed to have renewed their faith in the honest appeal of their songs. Stripped of their usual bitterly witty delivery and cynical banter, playing to a capacity crowd which included such music luminaries such as Setanta labelmates and dino-rocker Robert Plant, the Divine Comedy gave a refreshingly energetic and genuine performance. Songs ranging back to earlier albums such as "Liberation" and "Casanova" all the way up to their current release "A Short Album About Love" seemed to be transformed from cynical and clever ditties into melodic and tender gems.
It takes a uniquely gifted performer to deliver a line like "If you were a horse, I'd clean the crap out of your stable and never once complain" and not completely drench it in sarcasm. During Friday's show, Hannon was able to meld his intelligent and witty literacy with a touching vulnerability and absolutely mezmerize the audience.
Perhaps the most stunning moment came with Neil Hannon's rendition of a Stephin Merritt penned 6ths song which had been handed to him merely hours before the show. Merritt, the Magnetic Fields frontman, posesses a rare genius for crafting songs which emphasize other singers' strengths, and this one perfectly suited Hannon's brand of witty intellect tempered with gentle sentimentality. Without adequate rehearsal opportunity to sheath the song in a slick veneer, Hannon cameforth with a shyly charming and slightly trepidatious acapella rendition of this dour, sensitive song and with this flash of the more human Hannon, rather than the elegantly inaccessible creature he's devised, the audience was left breathless.

Hannon baby is a ‘divine’ gift
Successful pop singer and songwriter Neil Hannon and his wife Orla became parents over the Christmas period with the birth of their daughter Willow.
Baby Willow was born by caesarean section at a London Hospital on December 19 — coincidentally on Orla’s birthday. She weighed eight and a half pounds. Both mother and baby left hospital three days after the birth, just in time to enjoy a family Christmas at their London home. Neil is a son of the Rt. Rev Brian Hannon, Bishop of Clogher and Mrs. Maeve Hannon. Earlier this week Bishop and Mrs. Hannon returned from a trip to England where they had spent time with Neil, Orla and Willow. “They are doing fine. We were with them from Friday to Sunday,” said Bishop Hannon on Monday. “We are absolutely delighted. They are both making very good parents,” he added. Willow is the fourth grand-daughter for Bishop and Mrs. Hannon. Their eldest son Desmond and his wife Helen are parents to two little girls while their second son Brendan and wife Frances have one daughter. view 2002-01-03 news index Goto printable version

After some disappointing releases, Neil Hannon goes back to basics on new album Absent Friends . But is it any cop? trigger-cut reveals all... At first listen, I was disappointed. It didn't kick my arse. It didn't even caress it gently. Instead, it just sounded like the latest in a series of frustrating Divine Comedy albums. "What's happened to Neil Hannon since 1996?" I asked myself. "The fucker is breaking my heart here."
In an unwise effort to coerce myself into liking the album, I played it on a loop for a full day while working ( alright then, while perusing football sites ) and let it slither down into my sub-conscious. But slithering back up again, my subconscious said: "Nah, it's still no great shakes". Curse it. Then, after a break for a few days, I returned to the album in anticipation of writing this review. I was anxious. I really didn't want to have to chew out the guy who wrote The Summerhouse . I thought "Hey, maybe I can just make some witty remarks while noting some minor saving graces about it". That sounded like a plan. I got my pen out to note some minor saving graces.

Sen. Hannon Firewise Keynote Speaker
Sen. Hannon has been a leader for many years in the Oregon Legislature's ways-and-means process. In the mid-1990s, his influence set the stage for the development of a key piece of wildfire-related legislation. "In that context, Sen. Hannon was instrumental in helping raise the issue of the wildland-urban interface," Oregon Department of Forestry's Clark Seely said. The assistant state forester noted that the legislative process "ultimately culminated in passage of Senate Bill 360." This groundbreaking law, entitled the Oregon Forestland-Urban Interface Fire Protection Act of 1997, calls for classification of urban fringe areas that are vulnerable to wildfire. It is estimated that more than 250,000 Oregonians reside in the wildland-urban interface. The legislation also specifies establishment of standards for property owners to meet in order to minimize the fire hazards. In some cases it could be advantageous to meet Senate Bill 360 standards on a neighborhood, rather than individual homeowner, basis. The Firewise Communities Workshop will give participants the tools and know-how for this corporate approach to reducing fire risk.

Transcript of an Interview by Neil Cooper
First of all, tell me about the new album, 'The Little Red Songbook'
The Little Red Songbook started as a bunch of vague hunches and interests I had at the beginning of 1998.
I was thinking about whether it's possible to be a bohemian in the age of computers. I went back and listened to the rock opera Hair a lot. I also started thinking about the Y2K problem. I was planning a cheeky 'sex vaudeville' record comprising 60 one-minute songs, called Please Enjoy Casio Sex Pop
Then I got fascinated by the late 60s vogue for Moog synthesiser reworkings of Bach and Vivaldi. I started watching a lot of Kubrick movies: A Clockwork Orange and . Putting all that together, I drew up a scenario which I titled Freakscene Versus The Mainframe . I imagined a bunch of hairy hippy terrorists, intent on saving the world from Y2K, attacking the HAL 9000 computer in while it sang a slowed-down version of tunes from The Notebook Of Anna Magdalena Bach
Then I imagined the alternative: a world in which Y2K causes a disaster as serious as the plague Boccacio describes in The Decameron . What kind of thing would people want to tell stories about in the empty wilderness following the collapse of the Information Age? Why, sex of course.

The Divine Comedy Live at the London Palladium
Thursday, 29 April 2004
This is the fourth time I've had the pleasure of seeing The Divine Comedy live. The previous performances saw songwriter, singer and occasional live musician Neil Hannon backed by a conventional rock band set up. This time he had an orchestra to support him, as befitted the venue. For this concert on the 26th April, I was lucky enough to have a front row seat. There was no support act and about ten minutes after the scheduled start time of 19:45, a slightly nervous man came to the microphone and announced that the performance was being filmed for a forthcoming DVD (the group's first). The audience were excited by this announcement when the orchestra walked on stage and began playing the instrumental Laika's Theme Absent Friends , from the new album of the same name In Search Of Happiness followed, which contains an instrumental passage that British readers may recognise from the BBC television series Tomorrow's World. Neil introduced those on stage with him during this part. The rest of the first half consisted of old favourites such as Becoming More Like Alfie interwoven with tracks from Absent Friends After the intermission, Neil returned to the stage wearing a different suit and a pair of sunglasses, and treated us to an electrifying
