Neil Hannon is frequently compared to Jarvis Cocker, and there is no denying that he shares a certain British quirky wit with the Tall Dark One, but he's not like Jarvis, he doesn't draw from the seamy side of working-class life. Oh no, not he. His is a magpie's nest of ersatz references plundered from art, cinema, literature, and music. He has never had a proper job. Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy) January 29, 2003 Despite my addiction to music and ludicrous rate of CD acquisition, it's actually very rare that an artist touches a nerve. Yes, I have thousands of CDs spanning close to as many artists, though if asked, I would only list off a handful of them as my favorites. Artists that upon hearing evoked such an inexplicable reaction, all I can do is run around telling everyone, "You have to hear this!" Such an artist is The Divine Comedy. While the unfamiliar are quick to assign TDC as a lounge act, there is absolutely nothing sleepy or innocuous about their catalogue. Anyone who can take restroom rhythms out of the bathroom is doing something truly innovative, and all should pay appropriate attention. Often using a full orchestra, TDC delivers a production rivaling almost all in existence. Other artists struggle to sound like this when recording, and TDC make it seem so brilliantly effortless. Add to this that every TDC assemblage is written and coordinated by only one person, Neil Hannon, and you can't help but pay your respects. Very few solo-type 'band' artists are able to achieve such a grand sound in the studio. Much to my delight, Neil obliged me an interview over the phone just before sound check on the final night of his U.S. tour before heading back to Northern Ireland where he is now working on new material for his next release.

He grew up the son of a priest (Hannon the Cannon as he used to be known) in a mainly protestant school in the Republic, shy, introverted and with a keen ambition to design cars for a local motor company. Thankfully, at the age of 17 he started going to pubs, gigs and concerts, which, combined with a youth spent obsessing over classical and indie music and a moment of epiphany while watching Merchant Ivory's film of A Room With A View , resulted in Neil developing a singular ambition to become a musician, a proper one, like. By 1989, NH (on guitar and vocals) had formed a band with two of his school chums, John McCullough (bass) and Kevin Traynor (drums) named The Divine Comedy. They recorded an album of indie-based despairing ballads titled Fanfare For The Comic Muse in 1990, with two similar follow-up records, Timewatch and Europop . Sales were not high by anyone's standards. In fact quality of life for the band wasn't high by most people's standards and Neil was left on his own to fend for himself when the other members bailed out to follow educational paths to proper careers. (This accounts for the peculiar nomenclature of The Divine Comedy, as it is now, in the unusual sense of the phrase, a one-man-band)

The first Divine Comedy album, Liberation , was released in August 1993. Promenade followed shortly afterwards, in March 1994. Casanova was the third album from Neil and his band. This time it seemed that it would bring the commercial success which the British press had predicted. The first single Something For The Weekend was championed by Chris Evans. As the single rose from the Radio One C list to A list the week before release, Neil became more accustomed to TV, appearing on The Big Breakfast, Saturday Live and eventually Top Of The Pops. Suddenly The Divine Comedy were appealing to a whole new audience. The last single from Casanova was The Frog Princess on November 4th 1996; It reached number 15 in the UK chart. Now the new album A Short Album About Love is on release and has already received huge acclaim. I spoke with Neil Hannon and the band, recently in Ireland to promote the new album, on the new found success.

The Beauty Regime From the hushed tones of opener Timestretched to the plodding finale The Beauty Regime, Regeneration seems to go out of its way to leave past jauntiness behind. There is, not entirely sadly, nothing here about coaches, woodsheds or Michael Caine characters. But we knew that long ago Neil Hannon had opted to shed the pretence and "be himself", supposing he could remember who that was. We also knew that some changes would be necessary to keep the vision. Regeneration was eagerly awaited. Musically, this album is not that much of a change of direction for The Divine Comedy, for the songs are every bit as glorious as their predecessors; and this is not really surprising, for the line-up is the same, with Hannon still accounting for all the songwriting credits. In the main, the arrangements and instrumentation are simpler and rather more stripped down than anything that went before. As Hannon acknowledged, the last studio album featured over 100 musicians - things were getting ridiculous. Despite the back-to-basics approach, Regeneration is still easily recognised as a product of the same band, albeit with the addition of producer Nigel Godrich.
