In Extreme Measures , the English doctor Guy Luthan (Hugh Grant) works in the emergency room (ER) of an American hospital where he discovers that a group of scientists around Dr. Lawrence Myrick (Gene Hackman) kidnap homeless people in order to use them for medical experiments. Two homeless people manage to escape. One of them ends up in Luthan's ER. He is in a serious condition and shows post-operation scars. After convulsions, the team manages to stabilize him. He tells Luthan that his name is Claude Minkins and that he has been here before. "Triphase" is the keyword he spells. Dr. Luthan does not know what "triphase" is. A new type of medication? Nor does Jeff, who works with Luthan, know what it is. Minkins mentions another name, Teddy Dolson. After new convulsions, he dies. The other homeless person, Teddy Dolson, manages to get to NYC's Grand Central Terminal Station. He is in bad shape, too. He wears only a raincoat and sweats badly. At a party, the daughter of Dr. Myrick (Gene Hackman) reads a telegram from the White House congratulating him to his groundbreaking work in the field of neurological medicine. At the same time, FBI-agent Hare (David Morse) is looking for Teddy Dolson; and Dr. Luthan still wonders why his patient Minkins died. The lab results he gets are very bizarre. He starts investigating the case and finds out that Minkins never got to the hospital's morgue. Luthan's boss thinks that the lab report just shows that the lab is even more ineffective than they thought and he asks Luthan to "drop this thing!". But Luthan digs deeper and finds out the both Minkins and Dolson were homeless. At his request, a secretary does some research on the two men on the computer: Error 781 for both.

Home Il colpo - heist di D. Mamet con Gene Hackman, Danny DeVito, Delroy Lindo, Sam Rockwell Joe Moore (Gene Hackman) viene ripreso dalla telecamera di sicurezza durante un furto in gioielleria con i suo soci Bobby e Pinky. A questo punto l'unica soluzione e' la fuga, non prima pero' di aver commesso un ultimo furto per Bergman (Danny De Vito), un ricettatore che lo tiene in pugno. Come sempre nel cinema di Mamet le cose non sono mai quello che sembrano, e i colpi di scena si susseguono uno dopo l'altro. In Heist, pero', i pezzi non si incastrano perfettamente come al solito, lasciando per strada parecchi buchi di scenggiatura. Rimangono dei buoni attori, degli ottimi dialoghi, e una regia comunque accurata. Quanto basta per una visione gradevole, ma lontana dai capolavori del regista di "La casa dei giochi". Il fatto che i cloni americani riscontrino un successo mondiale, spesso maggiore dell'originale, non fa arrabbiare i francesi, ma anzi costituisce per loro un motivo di vanto. E non hanno tutti i torti. Essi sanno, infatti, che il merito di tale successo non riposa solo sulla fama dei divi chiamati ad interpretare i ruoli che furono dei loro beniamini nazionali, né sulla potenza promozionale dell'industria cinematografica hollywoodiana, ma sopratutto, come sempre, sulla forza del soggetto e della sceneggiatura, che rimangono spesso identici all'originale.

Nació en San Bernardino en medio de la crisis económica del '30 y tuvo una infancia con dificultades económicas y familiares. A los 16 años mintió sobre su edad y se alistó en la Marina, gracias a lo cual pasó seis años en Shangai, Japón y Hawai. Su acercamiento a la actuación comenzó cuando fue asignado a la radio de las Fuezas Armadas. Una vez que abandonó la Marina, estudió en la Universidad de Illinois, donde se graduó de periodista. Posteriormente estudió en la School of Radio Technique (Nueva York), lo que le permitió trabajar en radios de Florida e Illinois. Para completar sus estudios, aprendió Arte en la Art Students League de Nueva York y actuación en la Pasadena Playhouse de California, donde conoció a Dustin Hoffman. Cuando volvió a mudarse a Nueva York, comenzó a actuar en el off-Broadway, ejerciendo paralelamente diferentes empleos para mantenerse. Después de varios años trabajando en teatro y haciendo pequeños roles en cine y TV, en 1964 pegó su primer éxito en Broadway con Any Wednesday. El mismo año trabajó en el film Lilith, con Warren Beatty, quien luego lo convocó para representar al hermano de Clyde en Bonnie y Clyde (Bonnie and Clyde, 1967), por la que obtuvo su primera nominación al Oscar. A partir de este film, su carrera se afianzó y Hackman comenzó a trabajar ininterrumpidamente.
