My third year project was to create the scanning head for a non-intrusive system for mapping blood vessels in a human arm using near infrared light. A collimated beam of light was shone onto the scan site, and the diffused light was guided back to the scanner head, conditioned and sent to a processor. Blood vessels caused absorption of much of the light, resulting in smaller voltages. Academic fields of interest include digital system design, systems integration, software design and networking. Gunn made the following statement in reaction to a plan announced today by the Bush administration to restructure passenger rail service: "Amtrak wasn't asked to work on developing the plan and hasn't been consulted or briefed on it. Consequently, we'll withhold commenting until such time as we are briefed. "That said, we expect the administration to continue a responsible course of action supporting Amtrak's present operations, capital projects and improved efficiency and service. At the same time, Amtrak will continue its critical mission and responsibility to serve our passengers and run the railroad. "While federal policymakers and others debate the structure and funding of passenger rail service, Amtrak will continue to do its job. That's why we will continue to put every effort into securing the $1.8 billion in federal support needed next year to fund the capital projects that are needed right now to run safely and reliably. "The importance of spending money on capital projects immediately cannot be overstated. Two weeks ago, aging catenary wires fell apart in New York. This one incident resulted in a 24-hour service disruption between New York and Boston. Years of deferred maintenance also resulted in the loss of two AEM-7 electric engines. While we are aggressively rebuilding our AEM-7s, they are failing almost as fast as they can be rebuilt. Two moveable bridges in Connecticut dating from the early 1900s - the Thames River and the Niantic River bridges - are in danger of failing, and if they do, it will stop service between New Haven and Boston until they are fixed or replaced.

Besides, that wasn't sad so much as it was miscontextualized. No, the sad note is that composer Louis Hardin, also known as Moondog, died last week. He was 83. In the 1950s and '60s, Moondog was a mysterious and extravagantly garbed street musician in New York City, dressed in a homemade robe, sandals, a flowing cape and horned Viking helmet, and clutching a long hand-crafted spear. But his compositions, which merged jazz, classical, Native American and other influences, anticipated and influenced the minimalist movement. Though later acclaimed in Europe as an avant-garde composer, Moondog was perhaps best known for his unusually time-signatured vocal rounds. A rounds is, of course a musical composition for two or more voices in which each voice enters at a different time with the same melody. "Row Row Row your Nautilus Exercise Machine" and "Frère Jacques Cousteau" are two good examples.

Paul Virilio and the Mediation of Perception and Technology David Beard and Joshua Gunn Enculturation, Vol. 4, No. 2, Fall 2002 Paul Virilio ( Open Sky In the media studies scholarship aligned with the trajectory initiated by the work of the Frankfurt School, Benjamin's "The Work of Art in the Age of [Its] Mechanical Reproduction [/Reproducibility]" is cited as the one of the first attempts to address the relationship between filmic technology and changing modes of human perception. Two elements of this essay have become crucial touchstones in film theory and cultural studies. First, Benjamin's discussion of the "decay of aura" speaks to the possibility that filmic representation can demystify the means of production and give some insight into ideologically informed arrangements of the base. Second—and more pertinent to our goals—Benjamin argued that the evaporation of aura achieved by formal reproducibility reveals an "unconscious optics" of filmic reproduction: "the camera introduces us to unconscious optics as does psychoanalysis to unconscious impulses" (237). New media technologies, like the camera, allow us to become aware of the ways in which perception is molded and, consequently, aware of how ideology is perpetuated in the ways in which the subject is asked to "see" the world.

Back to Rescues page... This is the actual account of 2LT David Gunn, one of the rescued B-25 pilots... The mission was originally scheduled for Dec. 27, 1944, I believe, but was rescheduled because of weather until finally Dec. 30. It was, as I recall, the longest B-25 mission during my term of service with the 38th Bomb Group. Some of our planes had been equipped with more fuel tanks than most of the others so twelve of the longer range planes from all four squadrons were scheduled for this mission. Twelve crews from two squadrons were assigned to fly these planes. My crew and five others were from the 405th squadron and we flew in second position over the target which was more than 700 miles west of Morotai. I was flying a plane from another squadron. In addition to a five-man crew, my plane had the squadron Gunnery Officer as an observer and a Lieutenant from a photo unit who was to make motion pictures of the strike for eventual use in news reel films for state side release. I was flying number 3 in the first flight in our squadron. As we approached Tarakan, we closed up into tight formation and turned left to a 190-degree course over the target. I had a feeling that our flight leader had turned a bit soon which put us closer than desired to the squadron ahead of us and I shouted to my copilot, "too close" as we

David Ferry received his B.A. from Amherst College and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II. He has taught in the English Department at Wellesley College for most of his career, where he is now Sophie Chantal Hart Professor of English. In 1996 he was Visiting Lecturer in the Creative Writing Program at Boston University and will be teaching there again this fall. It's useful information, and it's reliably biased, so you know how to take it. Devil you know and all that. The recently-fired Bob Edwards could report on Presidents Clinton and Bush saving a child, and Clinton would be hailed as a valiant saint for saving that lone kid while thousands others died; conversely, George W. Bush would be excoriated for failure to save them all even if he only missed one. That being said, NPR's member stations are occasionally useful for something other than entertainment, and today I've found something of value. A program dubbed Radio Times (of which I have never heard) recently interviewed the head of Amtrak, David L. Gunn, and has posted the audio of same on the World Wide Web for all to hear. I'm not sure how long it is and I haven't listened yet, but it was passed on to me as being a good interview. Without further adieu, click here for the goods.
