They visited Africa and stayed with the Olo tribe, practicioners of potent sorcery and the roots of Santera, an Afro-Cubano religion. When they returned to the U.S,. Witt becomes convinced that he must become a black Hitler to bring war to the white world. Jane escapes and hides out in Miami from her husband. When she learns about the ritual murders of pregnant women, she knows her husband is behind them, using the murders to build within himself a powerful black magic. Together with the police detective investigating the murders, she knows she must meet Witt in the final confrontation. Tropic of Night is Michael Gruber's debut novel and it has met with high praise from "an astonishing piece of fiction" (Washington Post) to "a demonstration of rare writing talent" (Denver Post) to "this is no ordinary thriller" (St. Petersburg Times). A wonderful book!

R. Greer I cracked open Tropic of Night expecting a murder mystery, and instead found a literary novel. Not only does this debut novel by Michael Gruber contains deeper characterizations than you might find in a typical mystery, but it also addresses issues of race, religion, perception of reality, and love. While this novel is filled with the suspense of a mystery, it is also packed with ideas and observations that draw the mind down different avenues of thought. This is a delightful read for those who like their mysteries intelligent, educational, and thought-provoking. The protagonist of this novel is Jane Doe and the novel starts as bleak as her soul. Jane is in hiding, from life and from her husband, in the lower-middle class area of Miami. The story begins with Jane, calling herself Delores from the identity she stole from a dead nun, rescuing a small girl from an abusive mother and accidentally killing the woman in the process. Jane adopts the girl, named Luz, and begins to raise her as her own. This is the first hopeful act for Jane in the years since she faked her suicide and went on the lam. She works a menial job at the local hospital, does her best to make herself unattractive and avoid eye contact or any meaningful interaction with other people.

This particular email highly praising Michael Gruber was from the owner of his website. I read the site with eyes wide open as it revealed an individual who is a self-described "developing artist" and has accomplished a lot in his career as an actor. Michael Gruber is a consummate performer and it wasn't long before I saw him in Swing! and requested an interview. Originally from Cincinnati Ohio, Michael was once an All-American diver heading to the Olympics. Performing may have been set aside by his success in diving, but it soon became crystal clear that acting was Michael's true passion. His journey into acting took off and, while no overnight success, he worked his way up taking each part he got as an opportunity to "reinvent" himself. His well received role of Munkustrap in CATS and later the video was considered the signature of Michael's career that has also included The Wizard of Oz (Tin Man)

She helped me in a Freudian way by getting into psychotherapy which was of great help. EF: What have you gained from this insight? MG: I'm now trying to let go of controlling my life and where it goes. I want to allow my life to flow in a way that surprises me. For example, my role in SWING! (above, left) is honestly not as big and a little disappointing compared to what I was initially told when I was brought in to the project. After some thought though I now realize what a wonderful opportunity it is to be a member of this ensemble. A friend of mine would say it is better to be a part of the circle, not the center of circle, and not to have an ego to destroy the experience. There is a lot of joy going out on the stage. I want to remain open-mined instead of being angry or frustrated. A lot of performers deal with this because we all want to be loved. We are in this business because we need attention. An ego can be crippling. It can make people be unprofessional. All kinds of things can manifest from having a big ego. It is always about the work. That is where the joy comes from. If I can keep that straight, I will have good experiences. EF: Sounds like a sound philosophy. You mentioned you attended college. I read an article where there was a bit of a debate gong on. One side was that a good actor has an innate ability and just needs to perfect it by being on stage. Others say going to college is a necessary thing to learn more about the craft. What is your view point? Is a college education necessary to be an actor?
