He initiated scene rehearsals before shooting and was extremely meticulous about lighting arrangements. In 1913, taking his cue from the longer "spectacle" films produced in Italy, Griffith made the first American film of four reels, Judith of Bethulia (1913), and followed with the then-immense ten-reel Birth of a Nation (1915), an anthology of film technique and a landmark in the history of cinema. Stung by criticism of his negative portrayal of mulattos, he responded with a more audacious work. Intolerance (1916) sought to demonstrate the persistence of racial and social prejudice through the ages. In 1919, with Charlie Chaplin , Douglas Fairbanks , and Mary Pickford , he founded United Artists. Among his films, frequently alternating between historical spectacles and modest domestic dramas, are

Walthall left the Player's Club in New York to find his friend James Kirkwood at the request of a producer. He was met at the Kirkwood residence by Mrs. Kirkwood who told him her husband was working in films. Walthall was shocked at this news as motion pictures were not considered a noble line of work in those days. "I can't tell you how I felt," Walthall recalled, "An actor of the legitimate descending to the pictures was beyond me. I told my friend's wife as much. She smiled and said her husband was very enthusiastic. Wouldn't I wait for him? I waited, and when he came home, I saw a man aflush with a new idea in which he took delight. Set on the eve of the French Revolution, D.W. Griffith's 1921 epic Orphans of the Storm interweaves history and melodrama in equal measure. Griffith follows the intertwined fates of two orphan girls, Henriette (Lillian Gish) and Louise (Dorothy Gish), whose fates are tied to the country's cruel divisions between rich and poor. Louise is the unwanted product of a marriage between an aristocratic member of the powerful De Vaudrey family and a commoner. She is taken away from her mother and deposited on the steps of Notre Dame where she is rescued by an impoverished man with a daughter of his own, Henrietta. The little girls grow up side by side as sisters. But they eventually lose their parents and Louise's eyesight to the plague.
The sisters' destinies are again cataclysmically affected during their journey to Paris to see a doctor who will restore Louise's eyesight. The trip brings them into disastrous conflict with a decadent aristocrat, the Marquis de Praille (Morgan Wallace), and the slowly escalating mob violence of the French Revolution.
Lillian Gish first suggested that her frequent collaborator Griffith film the enormously popular play "The Two Orphans," which had been translated into 40 languages, thinking of her sister Dorothy in the role of the other orphan. Interestingly, Griffith cast Dorothy as Louise, the passive blind victim, when it was Lillian who was best known for playing helpless heroines. Most who knew her would attest that Dorothy was the more vivacious and strong willed of the two sisters. Lillian had written of her sister in 1927 "She is laughter, even on the cloudy days of life; nothing bothers her or saddens her or concerns her lastingly."

135. DEEP FOCUS: D. W. Griffith
One particular man, DW griffith, was hailed as the father of modern day cinema, a great innovator and artist who invented many of the cinematic techniques used
http://alumni.imsa.edu/~mitch/directors/griffith.html
Griffith would have wanted it this way; after all, he was his greatest promoter. Like Thomas Edison and Jelly Roll Morton, Griffith felt a need to inflate his image. Edison took full credit for inventions he merely improved upon, Jelly Roll claimed to have invented jazz, and Griffith took credit for almost everything in the art of filmmaking. In an ad published in the New York Dramatic Mirror on December 3, 1913, Griffith proclaimed himself the "producer of all great Biograph successes, revolutionizing Motion Picture drama and founding the modern technique of the art." Just as his inventions were exaggerated, so was the greatness of his films. Not that he was a bad director; he made some very good films. However, all of his work fall short of the reputation that his endured all these years. For one thing, they were very uneven. Griffith could be very effective when he restrained his actors, but such minimalism in acting does not occur frequently in his films. "He always wanted us to jump around, finding rabbits behind trees," said Mary Pickford. This did not go unnoticed by film critics of the time. Hazel Simpson Clark wrote in Motion Picture , March 1919 on The Greatest Thing In Life , saying, "Little Lillian Gish is shown to beautiful advantage in three or four closeups...The rest of the time she jumps 'ingenuishly' all over the place. The charm of Lillian is a very poignant thing and should not be tampered with in this manner, no matter how great the director."

A little before 6:00 A.M. on June 4 a PBY Catalina float plane droned through the bright morning sky. Lieutenant Howard B. Ady and his crew had been searching a sector northwest of Midway since well before dawn. Then came the electrifying message from Ady's plane: PLANE REPORTS TWO CARRIERS, TWO BATTLESHIPS, BEARING 320 DEGREES, DISTANT 180 MILES, COURSE 135 DEGREES, SPEED 25 KNOTS. Only an hour earlier Nimitz had asked Layton to give him a specific prediction of when and where the Japanese carriers would be first spotted. Layton swallowed hard and hazarded 0600, from the northwest at a bearing of 325 degrees, at a distance 175 miles from Midway. When Nimitz received the PBY's report in his operations room he could not resist tweaking his intelligence officer; turning to Layton he dryly commented, "Well, you were only five minutes, five degrees, and five miles out." But Midway was better prepared with antiaircraft armament, and that evened the score. Sixty-seven of the 108 Japanese attackers were destroyed or damaged so badly as to be put out of action. At 7:00 A.M. Lieutenant Joichi Tomonaga, leading the attack, urgently radioed Nagumo: another strike was needed. Nagumo agreed, then hesitated. Ninety-three aircraft aboard the carriers Akagi and Kaga had been held back from the first wave, fitted with torpedoes and armor-piercing bombs to be used against any American ships that might appear. But there were no reports of American ships; surely the U.S. carriers were still back at Hawaii. Nagumo hesitated a few more minutes, then finally gave the order to replace the planes' weapons with land-attack bombs. The process would take an hour.

D.W. Griffith
David Lewelyn Wark Griffith (January 22, 1875 - July 23, 1948) was an American film director (commonly known as D. W. Griffith) probably best known for his film The Birth of a Nation Born in Crestwood, Oldham County, Kentucky, David Wark Griffith has been called the father of film grammar. Scholars no longer dispute that few or any of Griffith's "innovations" actually began with him, but still he is given credit for a set of codes that have become the universal back-bone to the film language. In the broadest terms, Griffith contributed Mise en Scene and various film editing techniques to film grammar. That being said, he still used many elements attributed to the "primitive style" of movie-making that predated classical Hollywood's continuity system. These techniques include frontal staging, exaggerated gestures, hardly any camera movement, and no point of view shots. Credit for Griffith's cinematic innovations must be shared with his cameraman of many years, Billy Bitzer.

138. Nicola Griffith's "The Blue Place"
Critical essay about griffith's novel by L. Timmel Duchamp.
http://ltimmel.home.mindspring.com/blue.html
Nicola Griffith's The Blue Place
On the face of it, Nicola Griffith's novel, The Blue Place Slow River . Yes, these novels have very different protagonists, very different thematic material. But this novel employs the same general imaginative technique in both large and small, which is why I see in it strong speculative elements producing imaginative and conceptual effects typical of speculative fiction genres. Of course The Blue Place women ) have. Her take on people and life is narrow and sure; in real life (i.e., in our world) such a take would get her into all kinds of messes, but need not in the book because this is a constructed story, and thus can exclude the sorts of challenges that would make her like most other thriller-story protagonists (especially in the noir genre). The exclusion of such challenges is brilliant (and not simple or easy, either, as the word exclude might suggest since imaginative excluding is far more difficult to achieve than in cluding). Such exclusion provokes in me an exhilaration at the freshness of the vision offered a new kind of "estrangement," in the sense that sf makes the familiar strange- and empowerment (which I'll get to later). In Aud's personal history, the defining moment for her character can be located in a harrowing night she spent in a vacant apartment complex, when she defended herself from an armed attack by an intruder. Aud, we learn, has unfettered access to her "crocodile brain" (a conceit Griffith has used in some of her short sf). By putting her entire being completely under its control, Aud is able to kill her attacker. It is significant that Aud is nude at the time. Nothing could be more emblematic of her unique, classical-hero status. Throughout the story, her nudity is an emblem of her lack of the cultural inscription that ordinarily cuts off that "crocodile brain" and all its reflex commands. And it is an emblem of her pre-dating, culturally speaking, Praxiteles' 4th- century (before the Christian era)
