Griffith's Twenty-Year Record His 430 Pictures Gross $56,053,000 Earns More Than Any Creative Artists of History During his twenty years of effort in the motion picture industry, D.W. Griffith, the pioneer director, has made 430 pictures at a cost of $12,834,000. The gross earnings of these pictures, more than two-thirds of which were one and two-reelers made prior to 1912, have already reached the stupendous figure of $56,053,000, with two of Griffith's latest productions still to be reported on. Based on his last five program pictures made, Griffith's average grossage is in the neighborhood of $1,300,000 a picture, or approximately $500,000 more than the earnings of other Hollywood Director. The estimated net profit derived from these 430 pictures covering the 20 years of Griffith's leadership in the industry is around $25,000,000, after proper deductions have been made for production costs, selling and overhead. It is interesting to note that although Griffith has possibly made more money through his artistic efforts than any man in history, he is comparatively a poor man in respect to the mounting wealth of men like Joseph M. Schenck, Cecil B. DeMille, Jesse Lasky, Carl Laemmle, Adolph Zukor and others. This is explained in the fact that he has used most of his great earnings in experimentation with new phases of production and the development of artistic pictures that have brought him little monetary return.

La etapa que se inicia con el cambio de productora, supuso la consagración definitiva de Griffith con una de las primeras películas querealizara para la Magestic-Realiance, El nacimiento de una nación (1915), que ha sido considerada como una de las obras maestras del cine, película de exaltación sudista que destacaba por su aliento épico y por la capacidad expresiva de Griffth, verdadero creador de la narración cinematográfica. Su tercera obra clásica, La culpa ajena (Broken Blossoms) de 1919 más conocida en castellano como Lirios rotos, menos espectacular en sus busquedas, mostraba, en una narración matizada y contenida, una sensibilidad muy moderna en la dirección de actores.Otros importantes títulos de su producción son: Intolerancia (Intolerance) de 1916, Corazones del mundo (1918), Bajando hacia el Este (1920), Huérfanos de la tormenta (1921), y ¿No es la vida maravillosa? en 1923. La llegada del cine sonoro acabó con la facilidad creativa de Griffith quien no supo evolucionar y tras el fracaso de su única película sonora, realizada en 1931, La disputa, abandonó el mundo del cine. Después de 23 años realizó 487 películas.

Others attempt his methods of procedure and come more often to grief than to glory. No volume on the subject of directing would be complete without the mention of D.W. Griffith. And yet it is utterly impossible to deal with D.W. Griffith in any comprehensive way. The producer of the first great picture The Birth of a Nation , the man who strove for something beyond the times in Intolerance , the artist who made Hearts of the World and the masterly technician who stands sponsor for Way Down East , is singularly hard to approach from any ordinary viewpoint. There is no doubt that D.W. Griffith at intervals gives just cause to the commentators who place him at the top of the list of all directors. But at the same time he often does the most ordinary of things on the screen. In one picture he is an artist and in the next he appears in the light of a producer of hack pieces of motion picture film. VISUAL HISTORY GRIFFITH BAILEY COALE The Baltimore Flower Mart - 1915 Oil on canvas 28 x 40 inches Signed and dated 1915 Griffith B. Coale was born in Baltimore, Maryland on May 21, 1890 and in his early 20’s traveled to Paris to study with Richard Miller and William Laparra. He continued his studies in Munich with M. Heymann and also visited Spain and Italy. His earliest recorded exhibitions were while he was living in Paris. In 1913 he displayed Harmony in Green at the Paris Salon and in 1914 he exhibited Silette (1914) and Nude (1914) at the Salon. By 1915 he was back in Baltimore, living at 1626 John Street, and painted The Baltimore Flower Mart – 1915; considered one of the artist’s most important works on canvas. This bright, colorful, and fully matured work, displays Coale’s complete understanding of the impressionist techniques and the teachings of Richard Miller. During World War II, Coale was a founder of the Navy’s Combat Artists Corps and served as a Lieutenant Commander. In addition, he was a member of the Charcoal Club, Baltimore; Ship Model Society, New York; and the Rhode Island Ship Model Society. Between 1915 and 1921, Coale exhibited a number of works at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. A complete listing follows:
