65. Biography: Gregory The Illuminator, Apostle To Armenia (23 Mar 332)
St. gregory the Illuminator, Apostle to Armenia. With prayer in traditional and contemporary language.
http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/03/23.html
Gregory the Illuminator, Apostle to Armenia
23 March 332
The ancient kingdom of Armenia was the first country to become Christian, and it recognizes Gregory as its apostle. Armenia was a buffer state between the powerful empires of Rome and Parthia (Persia), and both of them sought to control it. Gregory was born about 257. When he was still an infant, his father assassinated the King of Parthia, and friends of the family carried Gregory away for protection to Caesarea in Cappadocia, where he was reared as a Christian. About 280 he returned to Armenia, where he was at first treated severely, but eventually by his preaching and example brought both King Tiridates and a majority of his people to the Christian faith. About 300, Gregory was consecrated the first bishop of Armenia. He died about 332. Armenian Christians to this day remember him with honor and gratitude. Prayer (traditional language) Almighty God, who willest to be glorified in thy saints, and didst raise up thy servant Gregory the Illuminator to be a light in the world, and to preach the Gospel to the people of Armenia: Shine, we pray thee, in our hearts, that we also in our generation may show forth thy praise, who hast called us out of darkness into thy marvelous light; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Prayer (contemporary language) Almighty God, whose will it is to be glorified in your saints, and who raised up your servant Gregory the Illuminator to be a light in the world, and to preach the Gospel to the people of Armenia: Shine, we pray, in our hearts, that we also in our generation may show forth your praise, who called us out of darkness into your marvelous light; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

66. Biography: Gregory Of Nyssa (9 March 395)
St. gregory of Nyssa, bishop. With prayer in traditional and contemporary language.
http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/03/09.html
Gregory of Nyssa
9 March 395
Gregory of Nyssa, his brother Basil the Great (14 June), and Basil's best friend Gregory of Nazianzus (9 May), are known collectively as the Cappadocian Fathers. They were a major force in the triumph of the Athanasian position at the Council of Constantinople in 381. Gregory of Nyssa tends to be overshadowed by the other two. Gregory of Nyssa was born in Caesarea, the capital of Cappadocia (central Turkey) in about 334, the younger brother of Basil the Great and of Macrina (19 July), and of several other distinguished persons. As a youth, he was at best a lukewarm Christian. However, when he was twenty, some of the relics of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste (10 March) were transferred to a chapel near his home, and their presence made a deep impression on him, confronting him with the fact that to acknowledge God at all is to acknowledge His right to demand a total commitment. Gregory became an active and fervent Christian. He considered the priesthood, decided it was not for him, became a professional orator like his father, married, and settled down to the life of a Christian layman. However, his brother Basil and his friend Gregory of Nazianzus persuaded him to reconsider, and he became a priest in about 362. (This did not affect his marriage.) His brother Basil, who had become archbishop of Caesarea in 370, was engaged in a struggle with the Arian Emperor Valens, who was trying to stamp out belief in the deity of Christ. Basil desperately needed the votes and support of Athanasian bishops, and he maneuvered his friend Gregory into the bishopric of Sasima, and (in about 371) his brother Gregory into the bishopric of Nyssa, a small town about ten miles from Caesarea. Neither one wanted to be a bishop, neither was suited to be a bishop, and both were furious with Basil.) Gregory did not get along well with his flock, was falsely accused of embezzling church funds, fled the scene in about 376, and did not return until after the death of Valens about two years later.

If you are interested in the history of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds then The Way It Was - A History of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds in Old Photographic Postcards will appeal to you. This book by Derek James Bason and Gregory Lee Bason contains over 100 old photographs of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds. Please click on the links below to find out more about The Way It Was - A History of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds in Old Photographic Postcards Site contents: A synopsis of The Way It Was Sample postcards and captions Map showing the region of interest ... Links to Oxfordshire history sites from the jacket "Old photographic postcards are a little piece of life from the past. This small but eloquent collection takes us into the Oxfordshire Cotswolds and tells the story of lives very different from the ones we live today. Tiny, quiet villages with dusty roads and only a horse and cart for transport; market towns where the first cars drew crowds, particularly if the inexperienced driver had a slight mishap; charabancs full of behatted and elegant ladies on a church outing; and whole families going into the fields to bring in the ripe wheat. The Way It Was is a fascinating record of 40 years of formidable change. People living in the area now will recognise places they know, or thought they knew. Perhaps it will take a while to realise that they are looking at their own home, or the public house they frequent of an evening. They will be able to chart the changes brought about by the passing of the years in a quiet, rural area, seen through the eyes of local photographers.

73. Moralia In Iob, Books One Through Five
james J. O'Donnell translation.
http://www.georgetown.edu/faculty/jod/gregory.html
Gregory the Great
Gregory the Great was pope from 590-604 and left behind a substantial literary heritage. His most ambitious work and one of the most popular works of scriptural exegesis in the middle ages was the Moralia in Iob , commenting the book of Job in 35 books running to over half a million words. The flavor of the work may be found from the highly "confessional" last page of the text, available here in Latin and in English . See also my study, 'The Holiness of Gregory'. A draft translation, made in the early 1980s and never satisfactorily revised, of the first five books is provided here: As of 18 September 1994, only the first book is in HTML with footnotes to click on; the others appear in a rougher, all-ASCII form, with the footnotes missing. Better later, si deus nos adiuvet. Comments, corrections, suggestions, improvements to jod@georgetown.edu

During the second half of the eighteenth century, the two dominant advocates of determinism or necessitarianism as it was then called were David Hume and Joseph Priestley. Defenders of free will then called liberty typically targeted Hume or Priestley, attempting to show the absurdity of their views. The Edinburgh physician James Gregory (17531821) was an original and forceful thinker and a champion of libertarianism. He published his two-volume Philosophical and Literary Essays (1792) in which he specifically attacks Hume's conception of necessity, approaching the issue as a scientist as well as a philosopher. Throughout his career Gregory sparked controversy by insulting his opponents, which he does here by accusing Hume of mala fide , or bad faith. Gregory's work attracted much attention, both because of his original arguments and because of his accusation of
