Those writers are telling the truth, because I do not love man-made laws and I abhor the traditions that our ancestors left us. This hatred is the fruit of my love for the sacred and spiritual kindness which should be the source of every law upon the earth, for kindness is the shadow of God in man.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Graham Greene A full-blooded Oneida from the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Canada, actor Graham Greene is best known for playing Native American roles; his characters are almost always positive and very dignified. Though he has provided a strong role model and has proved that there is a place for Native American actors outside the Western genre, he considers himself neither a spokesperson for Native rights, nor a great trail blazer paving the way for other Native American actors in film and television. Instead Greene prefers to think of himself simply as an actor capable of playing any role that comes his way, and indeed, in the rare instances when he is cast in other parts, such as that of a New York detective in Die Hard: With a Vengeance (1995), he excels. Unlike other performers, Greene did not grow up with a burning desire to act. Rather his becoming an actor was literally due to the luck of the draw. It happened in the early '70s when he was working as a sound engineer for a popular Canadian band. One of his cohorts thought Greene might make a good actor, but Greene was indifferent. They discussed the matter for a week before they decided to cut a deck of cards. If he lost, he would become an actor. Shortly thereafter, Greene found work on the London stage. It took almost a decade of hard work he made his feature film debut in the 1983 sports drama Running Brave before he made a name for himself with his Oscar-nominated performance as Kicking Bird in

Las Hurdes Land Without Bread ) from Videoflicks Un Carnet de Bal Life Dances On and Dance Card Duvivier
by Graham Greene "A rich widow looks back on her first ball with melancholy nostalgia, she wonders what fate has done to the men who said they loved her when she was sixteen. Their names are there on an old dance-programme.... the mood is meant to be autumnal – memories dance through salons , woo her at her bedside. But Duvivier is not the director for so intangible a mood (we remember what Kirsanov did ten years ago in Brumes d'Automne with a few dripping boughs). A great director – Un grand amour de Beethoven Beethoven Abel Gance
by Graham Greene "The echoes of the laughter at Louise have hardly died away when M. Abel Gance pops up again with another musical film, based on the last years of Beethoven's life. Pops up? No words could be less suitable to describe Mr Gance, a kind of Victor Hugo of the screen – terrific storms blow out his characters; cloaks, enormous chords bellow from the microphone: the actors gesture and moan and wring their hands in Gargantuan griefs, and the banal symbols of blossom and thunder and dawn, all shot with a fine pictorial sense, magnify still further the human emotions. Only once, I think, has M. Gance brought it off', and that was in his huge

original leaflet text by Sylvia Hall, photographs and some additional text for this web version by Peter Such The printed leaflet (of which the text provided here is merely a reference point) is available from the Trust for the price of a stamped addressed envelope. The purpose of this web version is simply to draw attention to Berkhamsted's connections with Graham Greene for a wider audience who may not be able to visit but might re-consider, especially during our Festival period, when they realise how much Berkhamsted and the Graham Greene Birthplace Trust have to offer admirers of Graham Greene.
S ylvia Hall's text introduces us to the many obvious and some less obvious influences of Berkhamsted to be found in Greene's work and in his own character. She starts the Trail at Berkhamsted station, where our picture shows 'the class of 2002' gathering for the start of that Festival's specially arranged Trail walk.

Graham Greene, Iris Murdoch and Sylvia Plath are three key writers of the twentieth century. Their work explores pivotal themes of love and hate, intimacy and alienation, truth and deceit, while still providing the reader with an entertaining read! In this course we will examine the stories these writers have written and the stories these writers have LIVED, in order to gain a better understanding of the relationship between - the Life and the Work. We will turn our attention to our three authors to ask: How far can a novel or poem be read as the expression of a writer's life? Is an understanding of an author's life necessary to understand their writing? Does the text itself shift in meaning as the years pass by and its readers change? Graham Greene spans the literary and the popular with his thriller-type novels and their world-weary anti-heroes. We will be looking at Greene's conversion to Catholicism in 1926 and the influence this had on the themes of his fiction: guilt and redemption, good and evil and alienation and despair.

(Contributors) More on books from The Atlantic Monthly. More on politics and society from The Atlantic Monthly. Graham Greene's Vatican Dossier Documents from the archives of the Holy See reveal the deliberations among papal censors over how to deal with The Power and the Glory by Peter Godman n common with many Catholics," Graham Greene wrote in a letter to The Times of London in June of 1954, "I have little regard for the Index in the rare cases in which it deals with imaginative writing ... So far as imaginative literature is concerned (according to rumor both Tolstoy and Lewis Carroll have been condemned) most Catholic laymen follow their own consciences." Greene was ostensibly responding to a letter in The Times that had drawn a comparison between the Roman Index and prosecutions for obscenity in British courts. What readers of the newspaper could not have known was that Greene himself had just been sternly reproached by Church authorities. Greene alluded to this episode in later writings. The records of the deliberations at the Vatican over his novel The Power and the Glory The Vatican had sought for centuries to wield influence over various kinds of writing; in 1571, at the height of the Counter-Reformation, it established the Congregation of the Index, a department responsible for censoring and even banning books (when it had some power over the author or the publication process), or at the very least for telling Catholics which books they simply shouldn't read. The Congregation of the Index was abolished in 1917, but censorship continued to be exercised by another department, the Holy Office, and an official Index of Forbidden Books was maintained until 1966.
