The Story of Graham Greene and the Holy Office
By Stephen Schloesser, S.J.
AMERICA for November 11, 2000.
Stephen Schloesser, S.J., is an assistant professor of modern European history at Boston College and a visiting assistant professor of church history at Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass. The excerpts contained in this article come from letters found in the Graham Greene Archive, in the Burns Library of Rare Books, Boston College. The Power and the Glory. Life of Graham Greene deep respect for the Sacred Purple, grand The Power and the Glory. imprimatur At this point in the English manuscript, Greene inserted his own French phrase for the translator to use in the official letter to Rome: que je suis navré to learn that my work The Power and the Glory has been subject to the criticism of the Sainte Office. The Power and the Glory. The archived correspondence regarding Rome and The Power and the Glory ends here. The letter to Monsignor Montini, originally typed on letterhead, still lies in the archives along with its envelope addressed to the future Paul VI. This seems to have been the end of the affair. Twenty-five years later, in late April 1978, much had changed. The French had quit Indochina and the Americans had soon followed; they too had quit Vietnam, evacuating Saigon three years earlier in April 1975. Pius XII had died and so had his successor, John XXIII. The Second Vatican Council had come and gone, its conclusion presided over by Monsignor Montini, who had become Paul VI. He was to die three months later on August 6, 1978.

In 1952, while the French Army in Indo-China is grappling with the Vietminh , at Saigon a young and high-minded American begins to channel economic aid to a 'Third Force'. Fowler, a seasoned foreign correspondent, observes: 'I never knew a man who had better motives for all the trouble he caused.' As young Pyle's policies blunder on into bloodshed, the older man finds it impossible to stand aside as an observer. But Fowler's motives for intervening are suspect, both to the police and to himself: for Pyle has robbed him of his Vietnamese mistress.

Notice of a museum established in Sotome, Nagasaki Prefecture, dedicated to Endo, is the prelude to an article on Endo's literary friendship with graham greene.

Shusaku Endo's enduring legacy
A new museum in Sotome commemorates Japanese literary giant Shusaku Endo.
George Bull
recalls his friendship with the novelist, and Endo's warmly reciprocated admiration for fellow writer Graham Greene.
ON MAY 13TH THIS YEAR a museum to commemorate the Japanese novelist Shusaku Endo was opened in Sotome Town, Nagasaki Prefecture, on a beautiful hill (famous for its sunset views) overlooking the East China Sea. The opening ceremony for the Shusaku Endo Memorial Museum was attended by over three hundred of Endo's friends and admirers from all over the country. They included well-known novelists such as Shumon Miura (now the Museum's honorary director), Jakucho Setouchi and Shataro Yasuoka. The theme of the Museum's exhibition early this summer is Endo's powerful novel, Silence
Silence, and serenity, are promised to visitors, especially writers, who visit the Museum to reflect in calm surroundings by the sea on their own work and on the life and writings of a Japanese novelist who strove to present to the Japanese, with their very different spiritual background, a new face of the Christianity first introduced to Japan in the 16th century. The Museum, on a site chosen by Endo's widow, was designed by Jiro Hiroshima to symbolise cultural Japan's cultural gifts to the West. It contains a reading room, an exhibition hall, Endo's manuscripts, a collection of about 7,000 books and the desk and chair Endo used when writing his last big novel, Deep River. This was the second strong pillar in Endo's monumental fiction, complementing the classic, searing novel, Silence, which starkly described the efforts of the missionaries in the 17th century to convert Japan to Christianity. Greene, Graham Greene, Graham (Henry Graham Greene), , English novelist and playwright. Although most of his works combine elements of the detective story, the spy thriller, and the psychological drama, his novels are essentially parables of the damned. Greene's heroes realize their sins and achieve salvation only through great pain and soul-searching agony. A Roman Catholic convert, he was intensely concerned with the moral problems of humans in relation to God. Some of his novels have been ranked as thrillers, and Greene himself called such works as Stamboul Train (1932; U.S. title, Orient Express ) and The Ministry of Fear Brighton Rock The Power and the Glory The Heart of the Matter (1948), and The End of the Affair (1951), mark him as a novelist of high distinction. Greene was a superb journalist, and many of his novels are set in sites of topical journalistic interest:

@import url(../../../css/bfi_global.css); Greene, Graham (1904-1991) Writer, Critic Graham Greene's contribution to British cinema is probably the greatest of any novelist of his - or indeed any other - generation. Collaborations with Carol Reed - The Fallen Idol (1948), The Third Man (1949), Our Man in Havana (1960) - and the Boultings' Brighton Rock (1947) are especially notable. Virtually all his novels and novellas have been filmed, with Greene adapting Our Man in Havana and The Comedians (US, d. Peter Glenville, 1967) and writing and co-producing The Stranger's Hand (UK/Italy, d. Mario Soldati, 1953). He also adapted Saint Joan (UK/US, d. Otto Preminger, 1957) from Shaw's play. His career as a critic began in the 1930s with stints at The Spectator and Night and Day. The latter publication was forced to close as a result of damages awarded in a libel action brought against the publishers by Twentieth Century-Fox when Greene, in a review of the studio's Wee Willie Winkie (US, d. John Ford, 1937), queried the sexual exploitation of the film's child star Shirley Temple. Greene was an outspoken and influential critic, and wrote an unfavourable review of Alexander Korda's Twenty-One Days (d. Basil Dean, 1937), for which Greene himself had adapted John Galsworthy's novel

Greene, Graham The End of the Party
Genre Short Story (6 pp.) Keywords Children Death and Dying Empathy Family Relationships ... Trauma Summary This story is narrated by a young boy who is observing his twin brother, Francis, as he expresses his extreme fear of the dark. Francis tries hard to avoid attending a children's party because he knows the plan is to play hide-and-seek in the dark. He pretends to have a cold, tells his parents and his nanny that he does not want to go, but is forced to attend anyway. When the lights are turned out for this game, Francis is literally scared to death. His brother tries to comfort Francis by touching his arm, only to find that was the final unendurable anguish for his petrified sibling. When the lights are turned back on, the adults find Francis dead. Commentary This powerful story shows how indifferent and unaware adults can be about their own children's phobias and anxieties. Even though the twin/narrator feels great empathy for his brother and understands his fears, he cannot really help him, though he tries to intercede and explain to the adults, who dismiss Francis's fears as silly.
