"Childhood is life under a dictatorship." Graham Greene was born on October 2, 1904 to Charles Henry
and Marion Raymond Greene, the fourth of six children.  Charles
was the Head Master of Berkhamsted School.  Graham's brothers
included Hugh, who went on to become a Director General of the
BBC, and Raymond, an accomplished mountaineer involved in the
1931 Kamet and 1933 Everest expeditions.  One of Marion's
distant cousins happened to be a person called R. L. Stevenson. Greene studied at the Berkhamstead School and Oxford ( in Balliol ) By all accounts, he had a pretty torrid time in Berkhamstead, having to balance all the time between his father and his schoolmates. He wrote quite regularly in Student Magazines, and was an editor of The Oxford Outlook .  His first work, a collection of apparently

Greene, Graham (1904 - 1991) Angleterre Ecrivain Corseaux / VD

Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film
Occupation: Actor
Born: Six Nations Reserve, Ontario, Canada Native American actor who gained fame as Kicking Bird, friend and mentor to Kevin Costner, in DANCES WITH WOLVES (1990). A full-blooded Oneida, Greene was born on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario, Canada. Prior to his DANCES WITH WOLVES success, he appeared with Al Pacino in the Revolutionary War misfire, REVOLUTION (1985); co-starred with Robby Benson in RUNNING BRAVE (1983); and played a Vietnam vet in the comedy adventure, POWWOW HIGHWAY (1989). After DANCES Greene began making frequent appearances on TV, generally playing quietly dignified characters on shows like "L.A. Law," "Northern Exposure" and "Murder, She Wrote." He also proved effective in less traditional fare such as "Where the Spirit Lives" (1990) for PBS' "American Playhouse" and the HBO film THE LAST OF HIS TRIBE (1992), in which he played the last survivor of the Yahi nation. He turned in a superb, laconic performance as a reservation cop who teaches rookie FBI man Val Kilmer a thing or two in Michael Apted's sober environmental thriller, THUNDERHEART (1992). Greene remains active in the Toronto theater community, where he has appeared in over a dozen productions.

Greene, Graham (1904 - 1991) UK Writer VD
The British writer and journalist traveled at length for his employer, the Foreign Office , for whom he covered diverse current affairs, particularly during the Second World War. As of 1967, he made several visits to Switzerland to see his daughter who had settled in Upper Montreux . He often had a drink with Peter Ustinov , who lived in Bursins. In the late 80's, Graham Greene decided to move permanently to Switzerland, a country he had come to love, and he settled in Corseaux . Like so many authors before him, he found the calm and inspiration he needed to write his novels. Graham Greene passed away in 1991, leaving his many readers orphaned. The writer now lies in the town cemetery of Corseaux, a charming village overlooking Lake Geneva More celebrities UK Writer VD All celebrities

http://www.upol.cz/~prager/e_texts/destructors.htm
Graham Greene THE DESTRUCTORS It was on the eve of August Bank Holiday that the latest recruit became the leader of the Wormsley Common Gang. No one was surprised except Mike, but Mike at the age of nine was surprised by everything. 'If you don't shut your mouth,' somebody once said to him, 'you'll get a frog down it.' After that Mike kept his teeth tightly clamped except when the surprise was too great. The gang met every morning in an impromptu car-park, the site of the last bomb of the first blitz. The leader, who was known as Blackie, claimed to have heard it fall, and no one was precise enough in his dates to point out that he would have been one year old and fast asleep on the down platform of Wormsley Common Underground Station. On one side of the car-park leant the first occupied house, No. 3, of the shattered Northwood Terrace - literally leant, for it had suffered from the blast of the bomb and the side walls were supported on wooden struts. A smaller bomb and incendiaries had fallen beyond, so that the house stuck up like a jagged tooth and carried on the further wall relics of its neighbour, a dado, the remains of a fireplace. T., whose words were almost confined to voting 'Yes' or 'No' to the plan of operations proposed each day by Blackie, once startled the whole gang by saying broodingly, 'Wren built that house, father says.' 'Who's Wren?'

After the hulabaloo of the recent film version of The End of the Affair, William Cash's book was a timely arrival, and a refreshing one. Like Cash, many Greene scholars feel that Greene's works are too frequently confused with his life. Art and life are distinct enough with most writers, but Greene more so, as he himself made many requests to his reading public to please not confuse his fiction with fact. Neil Jordan's film, however well-done, fell into this confusing fact with fiction trap, ...

The Life of Graham Greene: 1939-1955

Norman Sherry did an excellent job of chronicling some of the most facinating phases of Graham Greene's personal and professional life. While I found vol. 1 to be a bit slow and often uninteresting at times, vol. 2 really gives great insight into the period of Greene's most productive and important years. I'm eagerly awaiting vol. 3 to see how well Sherry tells the life of one of the more important authors of the Twentieth Century.

I MERIDIANI
