THE GRANDDADDY OF HOTELS - THE NACHUSA HOUSE
Up until a few years ago, it was billed as the oldest continually operating hotel in Illinois and one of the five oldest in the country. It has stood through the years as a symbol of our past history and heritage, and as a reminder to all of the great people who walked through its doors. It has withstood the ravages of time and seen 34 United States Presidents take office, dating back to James Van Buren who was the 8th President.
It all began back in 1837, when John Dixon and a small group of early settlers returned from a downstate trip to the State Capital at Vandalia. They had called upon the legislature for a grant of a charter to establish the Dixon Hotel Company. In granting the charter, the state allowed the group a corporate seal and power to raise a capital stock of $20,000 for construction of a hotel in Dixon.
Money was quickly raised to begin the project and the foundation was laid in 1838 for the rooming house by a Buffalo, New York ,firm. But further progress on the structure was halted by the stringency of the money market attributed to the Panic of 1837 which adversely affected the economy of the nation as well as that of Illinois and hotel builders abandoned their project locally and work stopped in the same year it had begun. It would be some 15 years later when work would once again commence.
On March 19, 1853, with a capital amount of $10,000, the erection of the large hotel was begun and the completed building was to be ready in July of that year for use by the public. Further delays in construction caused the project to finally be completed, and the Nachusa House Hotel opened at last, on Dec. 10, 1853. It was named the Nachusa House after John Dixon's Indian name, meaning "Head hair white."

Age at Inauguration: 45
Life Span: March 23, 1823 - Jan 13, 1885 [61]

F or schools like Albany that face increasingly tough budget years, grant funding has become an important means to fund new programs. Currently, the Albany City School District secures more than $18 million in grant monies, through both competitive application processes and government entitlements. Grants are not intended to fund the general education of students, but rather allow the district to start new, innovative programs that benefit Albany’s students and families without adding to the taxpayer burden.

"We are very excited about this new addition to our park system in the Town. It has been in the works for 30+ years and will be a great resource for adults and our children alike. It is amazing how much history is available to us to tap into on this small parcel of land."
-Mary Brizzell, Town Supervisor
Work on Schuyler Flatts Cultural Park started in the early 70s with archeological surveys conducted on a proposed sewer line. The surveys showed that the Flatts was an important site for Native and Colonial Americans. Because of its historic importance Schuyler Flatts is on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The site of the former Schuyler Homestead has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. The park area served as a resting area for troops and settlers in colonial times. It also was a meeting place and trade center for Native American Tribes.

    Grant Home - Galena
On August 18, 1865, Galena celebrated the return of its Civil War hero General Ulysses S. Grant. Following a jubilant procession, much flag waving, and speeches, a group of Galena citizens presented the General with a handsomely furnished house on Bouthillier Street. The house is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as the U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site. On August 18, 1865, Galena greeted Grant with a grand celebration. A "grand triumphal arch" spanned Main Street, and a holiday atmosphere prevailed with a jubilant procession, speeches, and evening fireworks. Julia Grant recalled that "there was a tremendous and enthusiastic outpouring of people to welcome him....After a glorious triumphal ride around the hills and valleys, so brilliant with smiles and flowers, we were conducted to a lovely villa exquisitely furnished with everything good taste could desire."
    The Grant Home
The brick house, which was designed by William Dennison, had been constructed in 1860 for former City Clerk Alexander J. Jackson. Thomas B. Hughlett, on behalf of only a small group of local Republicans, purchased the house for $2,500 in June 1865 and presented it to Grant two months later. The house is typical of the Italianate Bracketed style, which is characterized by well-defined rectilinear shapes, projecting eaves supported by brackets, low-pitched roof, and balustraded balconies over covered porches.
