    Phillipus Schuyler
was born in January 1696. He was the son of Pieter Schuyler and his second wife, Maria Van Rensselaer Schuyler. He may have begun what became a lifelong military attachment as a member of his uncle's militia troop in 1715. In December 1720, he married his cousin, nineteen-year-old Margarita Schuyler - the daughter of his father's brother. The marriage was childless but both partners were members of the Albany Dutch church where they were occasional baptism sponsors. This younger son of the first mayor of Albany was called " Colonel " and lived with his wife on the family farm at the Flats . Although living beyond the city limits, he represented Albany in the provincial Assembly from 1728 to 1747 and again in 1750-51. On a number of occasions, he spent time in the Indian country. Anne Grant later thought him responsible for " management " of the Indians. Much of the rich detail of "the Colonel's" married life has been related in Anne Grant' s Memoirs of an American Lady Phillipus Schuyler filed a will in June 1748. It mentioned Margarita, his siblings, and their children. He died in February 1758 at the age of sixty-two.

A.C68 SCHUYLER COLFAX PAPERS, 1841-1885 2 boxes Schuyler Colfax (1823-1885) was born in New York City, but moved to Carlisle, Indiana in 1834. Active in the organization of the Republican Party in Indiana, Colfax was elected to The House of Representatives in 1855. From 1863-1869 he was Speaker of the House. His longest and most important service was chairman of the Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads. His speakership and "advanced ideas on Negro suffrage" commended him as a candidate for vice-president, and in 1868 he was elected to that office, serving under President Ulysses S. Grant. He was considered as a presidential candidate in 1872, but was defeated at the Philadelphia convention. Soon after he was offered the editorship of The New York Tribune, but declined. Although never formally charged, he was implicated in the Crédit Mobilier scandal, and his political career was ended. His later years were devoted to lecturing and to the Indiana Odd Fellows. Presented to the Library by Mrs. Harold C. Townson, March 1946

BRIDGEWATER, FRANKFORT, ONEIDA CASTLE, SCHUYLER LAKE, AND SHERBURNE FIRE DEPARTMENTS AWARDED $285,953 IN FIREFIGHTER GRANTS WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-New Hartford) today announced that the Bridgewater, Frankfort, Oneida Castle, Schuyler Lake, and Sherburne fire departments have been awarded a combined $285,953 in federal funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Program, bringing this year's grant award total in the 23rd District to $797,505. The funds will be used to purchase life-saving firefighter equipment, enhance other firefighter safety and health initiatives, and increase the effectiveness of fire department operations. The Bridgewater Fire Co., Inc. (Oneida County) was awarded $49,950; the Frankfort Volunteer Fire Department (Herkimer County) was awarded $94,307; the Oneida Castle Volunteer Fire Department (Madison County) was awarded $29,700; the Schuyler Lake Fore Department (Otsego County) was awarded $45,414; and the Sherburne Fire Department (Chenango County) was awarded $66,582. "Without federal assistance, it's unlikely our fire departments would be able to purchase additional life-saving firefighting equipment and enhance firefighter health and safety programs," said Boehlert, who cosponsored the legislation that created the program as co-chairman of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. "I commend our fire departments who prepared winning applications for these beneficial grants. I will continue to do everything I can at the federal level to support our firefighters."

The Vice Presidency is an elegant office whose occupant must find it his principal business to try to discover what is the use of there being such an office at all.
—Indianapolis Journal, March 7, 1871 As amiable a man who ever served in Congress, good-natured, kindly, cordial, and always diplomatic, Indiana's Schuyler Colfax won the nickname "Smiler" Colfax. Through two of the most tumultuous decades in American public life, Colfax glided smoothly from the Whig to Know-Nothing to Republican parties, mingling easily with both conservatives and radicals. He rose to become Speaker of the House and vice president and seemed poised to achieve his goal of the presidency. Along the way, there were those who doubted the sincerity behind the smile and suspected that for all his political dexterity, Colfax stood for nothing save his own advancement. Those close to President Abraham Lincoln later revealed that he considered Speaker Colfax an untrustworthy intriguer, and President Ulysses S. Grant seemed relieved when the Republican convention dumped Vice President Colfax from the ticket in 1872. Even the press, which counted the Indiana editor as a colleague and pumped him up to national prominence, eventually turned on Colfax and shredded his once admirable reputation until he disappeared into the forgotten recesses of American

Schuyler Colfax (Served 1869-73 under Ulysses S. Grant
Schuyler Colfax was born March 23, 1823, in New York City. In 1836 he moved with his family to New Carlisle, Indiana. His interest in politics stems from his writing for newspapers, which he began at age 16. In 1845 he became editor and proprietor of the St. Joseph Valley Register, which supported Whig candidates and issues. Colfax joined the Republican Party when it was organized in 1851 and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1855, where he served for 14 years.
Colfax actively sought the vice presidency at the 1868 Republican National Convention. He hoped the Republican presidential nominee, Ulysses S. Grant, would serve only one four-year term, thereby setting the stage for his own nomination for president in 1872. Grant and Colfax easily defeated Democrats Horatio Seymour and Frances P. Blair, Jr.
Like most nineteenth century vice presidents, Colfax did not play a significant role in his running mate's administration. Colfax's political reputation was ruined in 1872 when he was implicated in the Credit Mobilier Scandal. In 1867 Congress had appropriated funds for construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. House Republican Oakes Ames of Massachusetts was director of the railroad and set up a holding company, Credit Mobilier of America, into which he deposited millions of dollars appropriated for the railroad. He proceeded to bribe other members of Congress not to expose his corruption by selling them shares of stock in the holding company. Colfax received twenty shares. He argued that his mistakes while in Congress should not affect his tenure as vice president, but to no avail.
