They fight for custody of Mr. Smith (the dog!), and Lucy wins. Jerry gets visiting rights. They both get new partners, but in the end they discover the awful truth - they cannot live apart. Review: by Donna Moore What a jolly romp this is! Jerry Warriner is supposed to have spent two weeks in Florida. But he hasn't. Oh my. When he gets home, his wife Lucy turns up with Armand, her voice coach, whose car broke down the night before, leaving them to spend the night in "the nastiest little inn". Oh my, oh my. They decide that the only option is divorce. Lucy gets custody of Mr. Smith, the dog, who brought them together in the first place. Their decree is to come through ninety days later. Both get engaged to other people and each does their level best to scupper the new relationship of the other - Lucy with her dull Oklahoma oilman and Jerry with his society heiress. The night before their decree becomes final, Lucy tricks him to Aunt Patty's cabin and the rest, as they say, is history.

I believe the challenge when discussing this film is deciding just which scene is the worst. The film goes from somewhat dull to disgustingly cheesy, to overripe melodrama in its overlong two hour running time, and never fails to get you totally peeved off. On the other hand, I can never help but weep at the end. Perhaps it's something to do with self-hatred, but I love hating this film.
Deborah Kerr plays a young woman engaged to be married to a wealthy New York businessman, who is thwarted in love on an ocean liner traveling from Europe to the Big Apple when she meets world-class playboy Cary Grant. They fall in love, partly because Kerr is the only woman who doesn't fall flat on her back when she sees Grant, which to him I suppose signifies challenge. Unfortunately, Grant is too famous, and so their romance must be kept a secret so that neither of their fiancees find out.
Eventually they reach harbour and decide to meet after six months, to see if they really do want to be together. They even pick a romantic meeting spot: the top of the Empire State Building (those of you who are thinking, Wow that's just like Sleepless In Seattle, well you're right, but backwards). But lo and behold it is not to be, for Debs doesn't notice the taxi cab coming straight at her the day of the great rendezvous and she gets pummeled to the ground. This is where it really gets bad.

It's Paris and where could be more romantic? And what more romantic couple would one expect than Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn! In “Charade,” Stanley Donen's colorful,
suspenseful movie about secret identities, murder, and other mayhem captivates the audience, even by today's standards! Audrey Hepburn finds herself with a dead
husbandand just as she is prepared to move on with her life, she discovers that he is a man of many passports and with backgrounds she knows nothing about. It is a story of a “lost” quarter of a million dollars that a crew of American soldiers had “spirited” away during World War II-and now everyone wants to know where it is! Clever, original,“Charade” is more than just a movie about a game; it is mesmerizing in its entirety. Donen's fast paced direction, Henry Mancini's matching music, and
photogrpahy-on-location make this a favorite film. Even the special credits before the movie opens is a thrill.

Archie, Cary Grant and Robert Barham
It was by chance that Robert Barham heard the radio programme about a man named Archie Leach, but it was to set him off on his own "Journey of a Lifetime". For Archie Leach was to become none other than Hollywood great Cary Grant, and his story was as dramatic as any of his films. The musical "Archie", composed and written by Robert, is the culmination of that journey, and tells how humble Archie Leach grew into the legendary Cary Grant. (The music on this site is all from "Archie", and you can order the CD by pressing here
Researching "Archie" took Robert three years, from London, to Bristol (Archie's hometown) and ultimately to the Californian sunshine and Hollywood. Along the way he encountered a surprising number of coincidences, and these prompted him to a write a book about his experiences. It is called "The Journey".
Other works by Robert Barham
Robert has also composed the score for the musical "Why", based on the biblical story of Job, and is about to release a new CD of his music entitled "Dream" that, along with new compositions, includes two songs from "Why". It also features the title track "Dream", a song especially written for the launch of Grown Up Congenital Hearts (GUCH), a national heart charity.

Cary Grant finished first in our AFI straw poll balloting for Greatest Actor of the first half of this century, ahead of Jimmy Stewart and Humphrey Bogart (who won the real AFI balloting, with Cary second). That's quite an achievement, given Jimmy's and Bogie's undisputed status as icons of film, not to mention of American life. But Cary had one thing that Jimmy and Bogie really didn't, at least according to the women I've spoken with. He was really sexy. Not one of the greatest actors who ever lived, especially in his early efforts and when trying to do broad comedy, Cary Grant's features and voice, even into his senior citizen years, were enough to make up for all the rest. He essentially created his own persona, and eventually became that person.

Cary Grant Biography Menu Home Biography Films Awards ... Credits Cary Grant was born Archibald Alexander Leach on January 18, 1904, in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England, to Elias J. Leach, a clothes presser, and Elsie (née) Kingdom. Grant grew up in a lower middle-class environment under depressing circumstances. As the only surviving son of his parents, he was the focus of much criticism, and his mother continuously grieved for her firstborn son, who had died in 1899. His father was an alcoholic who had numerous affairs with other women; with Mabel Bass he had a son, Eric Leslie Leach. Grant was never told about the existence of his half brother, nor was he told the truth when (around 1914) his mother was committed to a mental health sanitarium (he did not see her again until his late 20s). Grant’s education included the Bishop Road boys’ school in Bristol, and he received a scholarship in 1915 to attend the Fairfield secondary school in Somerset. Grant moved to New York again in 1927, where he appeared on Broadway in numerous musicals and plays while trying to break into films. Paramount Studios finally gave him a chance, although his screen debut

55. Images - The Glory Of Cary Grant
An essay by Elizabeth Abele on the actor's screen presence.
http://www.imagesjournal.com/issue05/features/carygrant.htm
by Elizabeth Abele page 1 of 6 R ecently Entertainment Weekly published a special issue"The 100 Greatest Movie Stars of All Times." Star number 6 was described as follows: If Hollywood had its own Mount Rushmore, Cary Grant's profile would be the most prominent: the hair that Katharine Hepburn mussed in Bringing Up Baby (1938), the eyes that Eva Marie Saint couldn't quite meet in North by Northwest (1959), the lips that locked so breathtakingly with Ingrid Bergman's in Notorious (1946), and, of course, the cleft chin that fascinated Audrey Hepburn in Charade On reading this entry, I was struck at how it contradicted Laura Mulvey's seminal work, "Visual Pleasure in Narrative Cinema," which characterizes the gaze of the camera, and the spectator, as always male and the object of the gaze as always female. Though these looks at Grant described above are all attributed to an on-screen female, it is obvious from the description that the gaze of the shots described forces male and female spectators to look at Grant as an object of desire. Because no other entry in this Entertainment Weekly issue presents such a detailed objectified description of an actor's (or even actress') appearance (the entries on Brando, Redford, Cruise and Gibson acknowledge their looks, but quickly move on to discuss their other qualities), it reinforced my own personal feeling that there might be something special about looking at Mr. Grant.

Grant, Cary (1904-1986) Cary Grant embodied the elegance, charm, and sophistication of Hollywood in its golden years. His good looks, charisma, and ambiguous sexuality enchanted women and men alike. As the star-struck comedian Steve Lawrence once said, "When Cary Grant walked into a room, not only did the women primp, the men straightened their ties." Born Archibald Alexander Leach on January 18, 1904, near Bristol, England, Grant began his career in vaudeville. In 1932 he signed with Paramount and moved to Hollywood, where he developed the debonair persona that made him famous. Sponsor Message.
