The day wide-eyed, shy new student Cameron James (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) starts school at Seattle-based Padua High, he is swept away at the sight of the beautiful and popular sophomore, Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik). Although he doesn't know french, he purposefully learns some of it just so he can tutor her, but finds that her paranoid gynecologist father (Larry Miller) won't allow her to date until her bitter, unconventional older sister, Kat (Julia Stiles), a senior, decides to. Kat, of course, has sworn off the likes of boys, but Cameron sets out to find someone that will be the perfect match for her, which is exactly what he finds in the form of the rebellious Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger). Complicating matters, Cameron's dorky friend, Michael (David Krumholtz), decides to use a wealthy jock, Joey (Andrew Keegan), who also has his sights set on Bianca, as a pawn so that he will pay Patrick to get Kat to go out with him, and then Cameron hopes to steal Bianca away from Joey. As you can see, "10 Things I Hate About You" includes a huge number of characters, some of which I haven't even mentioned, such as Kat's Shakespeare-obsessed friend, Mandella (Susan May Pratt) and Bianca's materialistic comrade, Chastity (Gabrielle Union). At a short, but well-used running time of 98 minutes, all of the characters are perfectly handled, satisfyingly developed, and, for the most part, are not treated as caricatures (another flaw of "She's All That," where the bad guys (and gals) ran around constantly saying, "you're vapor"). Since I could sympathize with the realistic depictions of the central characters, and since many of the comedic and dramatic scenes were surprisingly effective, I got completely caught up in all of the relationships and was thoroughly entertained.

This good-natured and likeable update of The Taming of the Shrew She's All That such a big hit: two high-wattage stars who look great and can really act. Ledger is a hunk of promise with a quick grin and charming Aussie accent, and Stiles mines Kat's bitterness and anger to depths usually unknown in teen films; her recitation of her English class sonnet (from which the film takes its title) is funny, heartbreaking, and hopelessly romantic. The imperious Allison Janney ( Primary Colors ) nearly steals the film as a no-nonsense guidance counselor secretly writing a trashy romance novel. Mark Englehart Average review score: Very poor This film is just poor. The script was terrible, really terrible. It was so obvious that at the prom kat would find out about the money and walk out. But the scene where the aussie guy asks her to go with him as a boyfriend would, she suddenly starts questioning why he pushing the subject. Some of the gags, e.g. where the archery teacher gets shot in the butt, didn't fit in the film at all. It was more like spoof comedy and just made the film even more unbelievable. Luckily i only rented this and didn't waste my money buying it. The main characters are only just likeable, and coupled with a bad script, make this film an embrassment to the whole teen/romantic comedy genre.

This is the first writing effort by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, and it shows, but they've hired the best of collaborators: William Shakespeare. The bard's works have been updated to death, of course, but this high school version of The Taming Of The Shrew is fresh and light, and contains some nice work by several young actors. The script is peppered with cute little Shakespearean references — characters have last names like "Stratford" and "Verona" — but it is also full of the traditional high school stereotypes, as usual. Padua High School's prom is rapidly approaching, and sweet-young-sophomore Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik, The Secret World of Alex Mack ) doesn't want to be left out. Her angry-feminist older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) is not only opposed to the "outdated ritual" of the prom, but against dating in general, since she can't find a boy who is anywhere near her intellectual equal. What's more, the girls' overprotective father (Larry Miller), an obstetrician who constantly deals with teen pregnancies, has a strict rule: no dating. Period. After some whining and cajoling, however, Bianca gets him to agree to a more lenient policy, but one that he still thinks is perfectly safe. Bianca may only attend the prom if Kat does. Naturally, this pits sister against sister and makes Bianca's happiness contingent upon Kat's selling out of her values system. Interesting parental choice.

Disney brings Robert Louis Stevenson's epic story Treasure Island to life as Treasure Planet, in an adventure like no other. The 119 year-old story is set in the intergalactic future, and finds teenage cabin boy, Jim Hawkins and crewmembers on the greatest treasure hunt in the universe, that leads them to Treasure Planet. The RLS Legacy, their brilliant space galleon is helmed by the stern Captain Amelia and carries some lovable characters like Jim's family friend and mentor, Dr. Doppler and the witty, father figure, cook and cyborg, John Silver. The crew sets out and encounters dangerous space storms, supernovas, and black holes. Jim is betrayed by Silver who turns out to be the legendary Long John Silver, a cutthroat pirate, that wants the treasure for himself.
