Check for Local Channels Save John Glenn's Cape Canaveral
Help Preserve Our National Space Heritage By: John Shepler As John Glenn waves to the camera in his orange Space Shuttle flight suit and climbs aboard the Discovery Orbiter to join the crew of six other NASA astronauts, our memories replay the excitement of that Mercury blastoff in 1962 that established him as our premier American space hero. The space program of the 1960s is more than history, it's our history. It's established who we are and what we aspire to as much as the railroads, the battlefields, the frontier settlements, or the historical buildings of our government. Yet, we're in danger of losing John Glenn's space program heritage at Cape Canaveral as it disintegrates, out of sight, out of our perceptions. Several years ago, I had the privilege of being able to tour the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral and write about it. I'd like to share that experience with you again, and also talk about how we might use our considerable collective influence to save one of our national treasures before it disintegrates and is lost to ourselves and future generations. Here's what I learned on "Our Trip to Cape Canaveral." When we hear about Cape Canaveral these days, it's almost always in reference to the Kennedy Space Center and the Space Shuttle activities that go on there. Indeed, the most prominent landmark you see is the enormous Vehicle Assembly Building, where the shuttle orbiters are mated with the external fuel tank and solid rocket boosters on top of a tractor driven launch pad called the Crawler. One side of the building opens up periodically and the whole assembly creeps down a gravel roadway to Pad 39A or 39B for launch. It's all gigantic, impressive, orchestrated...and distant. Visitors are kept at telephoto lens distances and provided with pre-recorded commentary as the "red" bus makes its rounds of Merritt Island. Had we only took the popular tour and visited the exhibit buildings and Rocket Garden, I would have probably left satisfied that I'd had the Kennedy Space Center experience.

A teleradiology project of NASA's john H. glenn Research Center addresses the need for bringing mammography expertise, usually located in large medical facilities to underserved areas.
    http://ctd.lerc.nasa.gov/5610/mammography/introduction.html
Background Information The NASA Glenn Research Center , the University of Virginia , and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation have entered into a Space Act Agreement to perform research on the transmission of digital mammography images using satellite communications. The Satellite Telemammography Network (STN) Experiment will be the major activity in performing this research. As described below, NASA's Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) will be used to demonstrate, evaluate, and validate technologies and methods for delivering mammography screening services via T1-rate (1.544 Mbps) satellite links. Introduction Telemammography using satellite communications addresses the need for bringing mammography expertise, usually located in large medical facilities and high population density areas, to underserved patients in rural, low population density, and economically depressed areas. The primary barriers to efficient and economical satellite telemammography are:
  • the size of the digitized (or digitally produced) mammography image (typically 20 to 40 Mbytes)
  • the combination of cost of transmission media vs. time to transmit, i.e., wider bandwith transmission media (either satellite or terrestrial lines) which can more quickly transmit the data are generally proportionally more expensive, and in many places high bandwidth terrestrial communications infrastructures do not exist

Text Only 1962: American spaceman rounds the world The first American to orbit the Earth has landed safely in the Atlantic Ocean. Marine Lieutenant John Glenn, 40, travelled about 81,000 miles (more than 130,000km) as he circled the globe three times at more than 17,000 mph (27,000kph). Colonel Glenn controlled nearly two of the orbits himself after reporting "minor difficulties" with the automatic altitude control system as he completed the third circuit - the maximum anticipated. Messages from the astronaut were transmitted by radio stations across the United States and United Kingdom and his progress was monitored by 18 ground stations around the world. As he re-entered the atmosphere after his four-hour and 56-minute journey Colonel Glenn said: "Boy, that was a real fireball." His spacecraft, Friendship Seven, landed at 2040 GMT 240 miles north-west of Puerto Rico, where it was picked up by the US destroyer Noa. Altogether, 24 American ships were ready to pick up the astronaut and his craft from various locations across the globe.

John Glenn: Loss of contact a terrible omen
John Glenn, right, is welcomed back from his flight aboard the shuttle Discovery in 1998, when he became the oldest space traveler at 77. He was the first American to orbit the Earth, in 1962. Story Tools SPECIAL REPORT Official accident report (PDF) NASA aims higher Slide Show Shuttle lost ... Special Report (AP) Former astronaut John Glenn and his wife had just turned on their television to watch the space shuttle Columbia return home Saturday when communications with the craft were lost as it soared across Texas. "We were going to be watching the landing and then it got into trouble," Glenn said. "Anytime you lose contact like that, there's some big problem. Of course, once you went for several minutes without any contact, you knew something was terribly wrong." Glenn, also a former senator from Ohio, said he had met Columbia's commander, astronaut Rick Husband, while training for his 1998 flight but did not know him well. Glenn said he didn't know any of the other astronauts on board. Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth on February 20, 1962. In 1998, at age 77, he became the oldest space traveler when he returned on the shuttle Discovery. Later that year, he retired from the Senate after representing Ohio for 24 years.

John Glenn: Space tourist cheapening Alpha
John Glenn By Richard Stenger CNN (CNN) Legendary astronaut John Glenn took aim at the first paying space tourist on Thursday while marking the fifth annual Space Day celebration. "The time will come when we permit more people in space. I don't think that time is here yet," said Glenn, the first American in orbit. Glenn, the recipient of criticism himself for returning to space decades after retiring from NASA, said Russia should not have allowed Dennis Tito to fly to the international space station this week. Hilton's 1967 dream MESSAGE BOARD Human spaceflight It was as if the United States had paid for most of an expensive laboratory on the ground and another partner "placed a Greyhound station or hot dog stand on one end," Glenn told CNN. NASA, the main builder of the multi-billion dollar station, opposed the flight of Tito, a California financier who is paying $20 million to hang out on the orbiting outpost.
