45. At The End Of Pragmatism
Review by glenn Tinder of the book The Promise of Pragmatism Modernism and the Crisis of Knowledge and Authority, by john Patrick Diggins. From First Things, 1995.

At the End of Pragmatism
Glenn Tinder
First Things 56 (October 1995): 43-46. The Promise of Pragmatism: Modernism and the Crisis of Knowledge and Authority. By John Patrick Diggins. University of Chicago Press. 515 pp. $29.95. Christianity is essentially a contemplative faith. The ultimate purpose of life is to know God, and beyond this end there is no other end. Action is necessarily relegated to a position of lesser dignity than contemplation. The kingdom of heaven cannot be envisioned as a place where we shall be able to get a great deal done, for there will be nothing to do apart from rejoicing in God and in the glory of a redeemed creation. There we shall know even as we are known, and that will fully and eternally suffice. It follows that Christianity necessarily presupposes "foundations." There must be realities-objects of contemplation-outside the mind and outside the concepts and words our minds employ. These, of course, are God and creation. In the kingdom of heaven we shall see God face to face and not play language games or playfully deconstruct the words that (assuming there will be words in heaven) will all reflect with perfect fidelity the Word. There is thus a deep antithesis between Christianity and the intellectual trends often characterized as "postmodernist," and it is hard to see how Christians can do anything, in the main, but resist these trends. These matters are closely connected with revelation. Christians may agree with one tenet of postmodernism, if with no other, namely, that reason alone provides no access to foundations. Not only does it fail to disclose foundations; it fails to provide grounds for thinking that foundations exist. But Christians, of course, do not start from reason, even though they do not ordinarily hold reason in contempt. They start from revelation and from the faith in which revelation is received. Only after the foundations have been brought to light by revelation is reason called upon to illuminate the foundations further and to clarify faith. This is all quite plain in Augustine: first we believe and then, believing, we strive to understand.

Astronaut John Glenn and the Friendship 7 Mission John Glenn blasted into orbit on February 20, 1962, part of a space race between the United States and the Soviet Union in which the Americans were lagging. The successful completion of Glenn's mission (he orbited the Earth three times) did much to restore American prestige worldwide. February 20, 1962 Encased in a bulky, pressurized suit, strapped into a seat, and crammed into a tiny capsule, Glenn put his life at risk as he traveled at 17,500 miles per hour 160 miles above Earth. With great skill, courage, and grace, Glenn piloted the spacecraft manually as the autopilot function failed, and Mission Control wondered whether the capsule's life-saving heat shield would hold while reentering the atmosphere. Glenn returned to Earth after 5 hours, suffering no injury more severe than scraped knuckles, sustained as he prepared to exit the capsule after a safe splashdown. After Glenn began his second orbit, Mission Control received a signal that the heat shield, designed to prevent the capsule from burning up during reentry, was loose. Although it could have been a faulty signal, Mission Control took no chances. Normally, the retropacket package would be jettisoned after the rockets were fired to slow the capsule for reentry. In this case, however, Glenn was ordered to retain the retropack to hold the heat shield in place. These pages of the official flight transcript of Glenn's 1962 spaceflight document the reentry . While struggling to maintain control of the spacecraft, Glenn watched as huge chunks flew past the window and wondered whether it was the retropack or heat shield breaking up. The heat shield held. If it hadn't, Glenn and his capsule would have been incinerated.

Introduction
Rolywholyover at the Guggenheim museum in SoHo is a collection of items relevant to the life and work of John Cage. The exhibition space has been divided into four sections:
  • the first gallery containing items selected at random from New York museums, chess tables, and the cabinets of musical scores and (Cage's?) books;
  • the small gallery containing two-dimensional works by Cage (scores and paintings) with a "permanent" arrangement;
  • the performance space; and
  • the long gallery containing randomly selected artworks (mostly two dimensional) repositioned daily according to the chance-derived score Rolywholyover, the interactive computer terminal, and the Plexiglas flat files of Cage ephemera.
When people think of John Cage there are usually two things that immediately come to mind formal chance operations and "silence". In this paper I will analyze the different components of the galleries (except the performance space) paying attention to the way they reflect upon these themes.
What I Understand About John Cage
Every well-intended message is the perfect representation of an idea in the mind of its sender. What is received is something entirely different. The best that can be hoped for is that the concept in the mind of the receiver is accurate to the original concept within limits acceptable to the sender. The received message is never equal to the sent message. The received message is a mixture elements of the intended message modified through the processes of encoding, transduction, and decoding combined with the noise of the channel. This mutated message has a life of its own and if we assume an intent to transmit an identical copy of a concept is beyond the control of the sender. Cage avoided this dilemma altogether by intentionally sending metamessages. "This message and its noise is about this message and its noise." Noise and message are to remain connected. The receiver is not to separate the two not that there ever was any choice in the first place.
