Hutton Gibson's comments, made in a telephone interview with New York radio talk show host Steve Feuerstein, come at an awkward time for the actor-director who has been trying to deflect criticism from Jewish groups that his film might inflame anti-Semitic sentiment. In his interview on WSNR radio's Speak Your Piece , to be broadcast on Monday, Hutton Gibson, argued that many European Jews counted as death camp victims of the Nazi regime had in fact fled to countries like Australia and the United States. "It's all maybe not all fiction but most of it is," he said, adding that the gas chambers and crematoria at camps like Auschwitz would not have been capable of exterminating so many people.

A serious filmmaker would normally feel gratified if his cinematic work inspired impassioned debate, intense emotional response, detailed analysis, even raging controversy. Well in advance of his picture's release, Mel Gibson has already produced that sort of reaction with The Passion of the Christ , his brutal, graphic, and lyrical account of the last 12 hours in the life of Christ. But Gibson insists he neither expected nor wanted the bitter arguments over the allegedly anti-Semitic content of the film. The vitriolic denunciations of his artistic integrity, and even his personal religiosity, have proven especially painful to Gibsonwho directs The Passion (his first such effort since Braveheart) but does not act in it. One critic who acknowledged that she had not yet seen any version of the film, Paula Fredriksen of Boston University, went so far as to declare that her reading of the script left no doubt that the movie will provoke anti-Jewish violence when it is shown outside the United States."When violence breaks out," she wrote in The New Republic , "Mel Gibson will have a much higher authority than professors and bishops to answer to."

One of the truths in The Passion of Christ
M el Gibson might be my favorite feminist. If he's not number one on my list, he's pretty close, in competition with Pope John Paul II. As you probably suspect, I don't have in mind the usual definition of "feminism." I can guarantee you there'll be no fawning Ms. magazine cover story on Gibson (or JPII). But give me a few minutes to fawn a little. I, like others, have now seen an in-progress version of Gibson's remarkable film. There is so much to be said and that will be said about the movie. Folks who get turned off by nonsensical talk that it is anti-Semitic will miss an unparalleled movie experience. But what they'll also miss is Mel Gibson, the feminist. Passion of Christ Lending a hand of friendship to Christ's mother is a very unlikely sister: Claudia, the wife of Pontius Pilate. Claudia isn't happy with her husband's general situation, and she's not keen on his putting Jesus of Nazareth to death. We know what Pilate chooses in the end, but Claudia does her darnedest to guide him. She is a decent character, who bears her own crosses and evinces nobility throughout. When Mary is at one her hardest moments, it is Claudia who walks over and hands towels to her, which she soon uses to wipe up the precious blood of her son. Mary feels pain acutely. Mother and son help one another. In another poignant scene, she is starting to lose it again, standing in an alleyway, not knowing if she can do anything for her son. At this point, there's a beautiful flashback to Christ's childhood, in which he falls down and his mother does what is only natural: She runs to him. The movie flashes forward again as Mary does likewise, running to her 33-year-old son. With the gentlest touch, Jesus gives his mother strength, even though he's a bloody mess in indescribable pain-all of which he bears with the kind of grace only divinity can provide.

THE CULTURE WAR I argue in my book that the media's war on The Passion of the Christ has been systematic and increasingly frantic. It is part of the overall culture war that is being waged by the Left on America specifically and the West generally. The chief theoretician of this war was the Italian Communist, Antonio Gramsci, who died in 1937. I go into this background in my book. Gramsci understood eighty years ago: Christianity is the enemy of Communist revolution. He wrote in 1921: What remains to be done? Nothing other than to destroy the present form of civilization. In this field, 'to destroy' does not mean the same as in the economic field. It does not mean to deprive humanity of the material products that it needs to subsist and develop. It means to destroy spiritual hierarchies, prejudices, idols and ossified traditions.

COLORADO SPRINGS Actor Mel Gibson won rave reviews from religious leaders here this week after asking them to make sure his upcoming film, "The Passion," accurately depicts the Gospel. The star of the "Lethal Weapon" series said his Christian faith inspired the movie, which depicts the final 12 hours in the life of Jesus Christ (pictured, left). Gibson is still looking for a distributor. The script, which Mel Gibson co-wrote, is based on the diaries of St. Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824) that are collected in the book "The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ", on Mary of Agreda's "The City of God" and on the New Testament Gospels by Luke, John, Matthew and Mark. "I'm not a preacher, and I'm not a pastor," Gibson said Thursday. "But I really feel my career was leading me to make this. The Holy Ghost was working through me on this film, and I was just directing traffic. I hope the film has the power to evangelize."

La Voz de Aztlan Los Angeles, Alta California - January 16, 2003 - (ACN) Film Director Mel Gibson said recently during a press interview in Italy that his new film "The Passion" is "buono per l'anima, non buono per il portafoglio" which means good for the soul, not good for the wallet. Mr. Gibson, a devout Christian, is having to finance his film depicting the last twelve hours on earth of Our Lord Jesus Christ entirely with his own funds. He has now earned the wrath of Jewish Hollywood and the Jewish Media. Apparently the Jews are not too happy that actor-director Mel Gibson has undertaken a film project on the cruel and heinous crucifixion of Jesus a little more than 2000 years ago by the Pharisees. They are now making his life very difficult. Mr. Gibson said Tuesday on a Fox News Channel talk show interview that a reporter from a reputable publication was sent to attempt to "dig up dirt" on him in order to discredit him and his film. "Whenever you take up a subject like this, it does bring out a lot of enemies," Gibson said. Mel Gibson said that his private life, his banking records, the charities he supports, friends, business associates and family members have all undergone scrutiny. He added that his 85 year old father has been approached and harassed. When asked if there was a connection between these incidents and his film "The Passion," Mel Gibson said: "I think there is."
