A Messianic Jewish Statement by Russ Resnik, Executive Director of the UMJC February, 2004 Recently the film "The Passion" by Mel Gibson has been a source of controversy among Christians and Jews. Some have asked where Messianic Jews stand, as members of the Jewish community who are also believers in Jesus, or Yeshua. Christians will tend to view The Passion through the lens of Scriptural accuracy and impact. Jews will view it through the lens of history, where similar Passion plays, from the Middle Ages on, have resulted in mass persecution. Our hope is that controversy over the film may lead to increased dialogue between Christian and Jews. Many Christians have reported that the film is a compelling work that closely follows the account in the Gospels and gives honor to Messiah and his sacrificial work. Why would such a film raise objections? For two reasons, one with which we sympathize but do not agree, and one with which we sympathize and agree. First, some, both Christians and Jews, believe that the film is anti-Semitic because the Gospel accounts are anti-Semitic. They consider a close following of the Gospel accounts, therefore, to be wrong and dangerous.

Ma d'altra parte, tutte le pellicole che hanno a che fare con la religione finiscono per attrarre l'attenzione di persone che normalmente non si occupano di cinema, e che non riescono ad evitare di commentare ciò che magari ancora non hanno visto. Così, eccoci finalmente davanti a "The Passion" quando ormai ne abbiamo già lette e sentite di tutti i colori. Ecco l'Uomo , dunque. Ma se è vero che raccontare tutta la vita di Gesù in un solo film sarebbe stato praticamente impossibile, è altrettanto vero che raccontarne solo la Passione impedisce all'autore di dare al personaggio la giusta statura. Ci manca l'aspetto "mistico", ci manca la sua grandezza. Ci mancano i miracoli e la predicazione: ci manca il Figlio di Dio, e c'è rimasto solo l'Uomo. Gibson realizza poi questa sua opera con lo stesso stile enfatico che aveva già caratterizzato "Braveheart", nella cui tortura finale si poteva già presagire questa "Passione". Ralenti e sangue, dunque; musica pomposa e primi piani violenti, per cercare a tutti i costi la commozione anche dello spettatore più disinteressato. Ma anche se un paio di momenti emozionano, per riuscirci davvero ci voleva tutt'altro approccio.
