The Conservatives have tried every counterattack, but Labour's huge majority has meant their arguments have been flicked aside. No matter that hunting attracts 1.3 million followers to meets every year, that it supports thousands of jobs, and is a focus of rural social life, fox hunting is close to a death sentence. Last month, after endless talk, the Scottish Parliament made hunting of mammals with hounds illegal. And last week the prospect of a similar ban in England and Wales moved closer, with the House of Commons yet again voting overwhelmingly (after five hours of speeches) to criminalize the sport. The upper House of Lords (after eight hours discussion) voted instead for a compromise that would allow hunting under strict licensing. In a quandary, the government invoked another six-month talkfest, after which it promised to introduce a bill to settle the sport's fate. But Nick's transformation is more complicated than it looks at first. As a man who can barely watch female-oriented television shows and commercials, Nick's newfound insight initially scares him, forcing open a once cryptic interior female world that is far different from the polite and predictable exterior with which he is comfortable. But when he realizes the potential power his gift grants him (with the help of a shrink played by Bette Midler), he decides to use it to sabotage his new boss, Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt), whom he believes has stolen the position he was meant to have at an upscale advertising agency. But, of course, as a result of the lessons he learns by listening in on Darcy's thoughts, Nick falls in love with her and she with him. Perhaps more importantly, Nick begins absorbing the pop culture around him in a way that's more stereotypically "feminine." The resulting "girlish" behaviors provide for the film's biggest laughs. Considered pests by farmers, who shoot and snare far more of them than hunters ever harm, foxes are flourishing in Britain. So are the ranks of those who would abolish the sport on grounds of cruelty. Their hopes soared when Tony Blair's Labour Party came to power four years ago, promising to put the matter to Parliament and let party members vote with their consciences. Yet the Labour government, unwilling to offend either the mostly rural voters who see nothing wrong with chasing foxes or the largely city folk who abhor the practice, took its time drafting a hunting bill. Nick Marshall (Gibson; Braveheart ) is a male chauvinist who works for an advertising agency. He meets Darcey Maguire (Hunt; Cast Away ) after she takes the job he thought he was up for. You get the idea, as it was explained, that Nick is a man's man, a man whom other men wish they could be. It was told early on that his mother was a Las Vegas showgirl, and instead of playing with other kids, he would be backstage with the other showgirls getting kisses on the cheeks and so on and ultimately a disrespect toward women. Anyways, one night, while trying out some women's products (to get into their mind frame) gets electrocuted with a blow dryer. When he wakes up he can hear the thoughts of every woman (and female dog) he sees.

O ja, de strijd wordt enigszins ongelijk als de sexist Gibson als een donderslag bij heldere hemel in staat wordt gesteld de gedachten van vrouwen te lezen. Aardig gevonden die selectief telepathische gave van Gibson. Doet een beetje denken aan Groundhog Day , waarin Bill Murray door het steeds opnieuw ondergaan van dezelfde dag een beter mens wordt. Alleen is het sterke punt van laatstgenoemde film dat de gimmick waar de film op is gebaseerd als het ware steeds opnieuw wordt uitgevonden en steeds meer geheimen prijsgeeft. Daar vloeien de grappen op logische wijze uit de gevormde situatie. In WWW zijn de enige aardige grappen de imitaties die Gibson doet van Sean Connery en van een homofiel. De gimmick leidt nauwelijks tot een geslaagde grap en er wordt niks meer mee gedaan dan vrouwen neer te zetten als tobbende wezentjes.

Nick Marshall is your typical businessman: Low-key, abrasive, comical, charming, handsome. He has a daughter Alex who is a typical 15-year old, and while her Mom and new Step Dad is on their honeymoon, she stays with Nick for a few weeks. Many things however are going to change in Nick's life, he has a new boss Darcy Maguire (played fantastically by Helen Hunt), his daughter is planning on having sex, and after having an accident involving a bathtub, dryer, and women's accessories, Nick is about to change forever: He can head what women are thinking. Surprised by this new thing he has, Nick isn't sure what to do with this, and while his job status is starting to dwindle down to nothing, his daughter hates him, and a woman is in love with him, Nick isn't sure what to do! After meeting with his old shrink Dr. Perkins (Bette Midler who in a small role is memorable) he realizes that he may just be the luckiest guy in the world. So he uses it the best he can, and when his company is offered a new account he uses this skill to come up with the best ideas he can. However obviously there is some downsides, he can hear what every woman is thinking about, about him, about someone else...and even his daughter.
