Garland, Judy (1922-1969) To call Judy Garland an icon of the gay community is a massive understatement. Garland's fragile but indomitable persona and emotion-packed singing voice are undeniably linked to gay culture and identity. This is especially true for gay men, but lesbians also are drawn to identify with Garland's plucky toughness and vulnerability. Garland's signature song, "Over the Rainbow," is the closest thing we have to a gay national anthem, and many claim that it was pain over Garland's death from an overdose of drugs in June 1969 that sparked smoldering gay anger into the Stonewall riots and fueled the gay liberation movement. Whether true or not, this story has such poetry that one feels it ought to be true. Sponsor Message.
After all, in the intensely closeted pre-Stonewall days, gays often identified themselves to each other as "friends of Dorothy," referring to Garland's 1939 role in The Wizard of Oz.

He introduced two naval officers who were involved with "mothballing" old ships and other war equipment. He explained that he was being mothballed, and the two officers then placed him in a large plastic bag, picked him up in a horizontal position, and marched him toward the rear of a bare stage as the orchestra played a slow march version of his "Pick Yourself Up" theme song. His last words from the plastic bag were, "See you on daytime TV." As they neared the rear wall of the stage, they faded slowly to black. - Ted Lassagne Jack Paar One of the most memorable (and abrupt) goodbyes in television history was Jack Paar's on-air resignation as the host of NBC's

JUDY GARLAND L'INSUPPORTABLE AMOUR
Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true Some day I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far behind me Where troubles melt like lemondrops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why then, oh why can't I? If happy little bluebirds fly Beyond the rainbow Why, oh why can't I?

Actress tries on the shoes for 'Boy from Oz'
Isabel Keating as Judy Garland in "The Boy from Oz." Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Follow the news that matters to you. Create your own alert to be notified on topics you're interested in. Or, visit Popular Alerts for suggestions. Manage alerts What is this? NEW YORK (AP) Isabel Keating has some gigantic ruby slippers to fill. The tiny woman with a big voice has the formidable task of channeling the girl from Oz Judy Garland in the Broadway hit "The Boy From Oz," the frenzied musical recounting the life of Garland's protege, Australian entertainer Peter Allen. Dolled up in crimson lipstick and warbling with the voice of a legend, Keating draws impressed gasps as she performs on stage with Hugh Jackman, who stars as Allen. Few would guess Keating is new to musicals and only recently perfected her Garlandesque "oh my." "Initially, it was very intimidating to play someone who is that incredibly just-blow-your-mind amazing," Keating says one recent night before curtain rise at the Imperial Theatre.

Lorna Luft talks about mother Judy Garland
Judy Davis plays Judy Garland in "Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows" (CNN) In the public mind, Judy Garland is closely associated with one of two images: the movie actress of "The Wizard of Oz," "Meet Me in St. Louis" and "A Star Is Born"; or the face barely hiding the tales of depression and tragedy that haunted her life, which ended at age 47 in 1969. But Garland's daughter Lorna Luft wanted to show many images of her mother, not just the ones that have been cemented in the public mind. And in the ABC miniseries "Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows," based on Luft's memoir of her mother, those many sides are there particularly the humanity and the humor of the Hollywood legend.
