An A Star is Born walkthrough
A Star is Born is Judy Garland's great comeback-musical after MGM cancelled her contract in 1950. Her husband and partner Sid Luft managed to talk Warner Bros. into producing it. It became much more expensive than planned. Garland was nominated for a best actress Oscar, which however was won by Grace Kelly for The Country Girl. The biggest robbery since Brinks was Groucho Marx ' reply. I think that this is a really great Hollywood musical. Three hours might seem a bit too long but a few nice songs now and then interrupt the drama.

A young singer/dancer (Eleanor Powell) goes to New York City in hopes of becoming a Broadway star. Along the way she encounters two vaudeville hopefuls (George Murphy and Buddy Ebsen), and meets a Broadway producer (Robert Taylor). The producer sees her singing and dancing on the train, and takes her under his wing, getting her a place to stay (Sophie Tucker's boarding house) and trying to work her into a new musical that he's producing. Sophie Tucker's boarding house is a sort of half-way house for Broadway hopefuls. Sophie is a past performer, and is trying to get her daughter (Judy) onto the stage. All of this leads to the inevitable big show, which is the finale of the movie.

J ean Hansen is wanting to find some meaning in her life, so she applies for the position of music teacher at a state institution for mentally retarded children. Once hired, she finds herself on Dr. Clark's staff, though she is not enthusiastic about his methods. She becomes emotionally involved with one of the children, a borderline case (Reuben Widdicombe).
When Reuben stubbornly refuses to follow orders, Jean defies Clark by sending for Reuben's parents. Mrs. Widdicombe (Gena Rowlands) agrees with the doctor and decides not to see the boy. But as she is leaving the institution Reuben catches sight of her and chases her departing car. Emotionally upset about the incident, the boy runs away. When he is returned to the school the next morning, Jean, realizing her mistake, offers to resign.
Clark suggests that she remain on and continue her preparations for a Thanksgiving show in which all the children will perform. On the day of the show Reuben's father (Steven Hill) comes to transfer his son to a private school. When he hears Reuben haltingly recite a poem and then respond to the audience's applause, he better understands his son's desperate need to achieve something for himself.

    Judy Garland
Biography Filmography Awards Gallery ... MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS Born and raised in show business, little Frances Gumm changed her name to Judy Garland and became one of classic Hollywood's most popular musical entertainers and actresses. She won her only Academy Award in 1939 "for her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile during the past year," most notably for her work on THE WIZARD OF OZ . Later in her career however, she would earn greater recognition for her acting abilities with Oscar nominations for her performances in A STAR IS BORN (1954) and JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG (1961). Judy is my favorite classic female vocalist. See more about Judy in her most famous role as Dorothy in THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939). Although it wasn't her first film, it was definitely the movie that made her a star and the role for which she'll always be remembered.
In ZIEGFELD GIRL (1941) with Hedy Lamarr and Lana Turner . This story of three young actresses "discovered" by Ziegfeld also featured Jimmy Stewart , Jackie Cooper and Tony Martin.

udy Garland never had a problem taking her audience wherever she wanted them to go; this was her special magic from the first moment that she stepped on stage. Born into a family of musical performers, Garland had a happy and joyous childhood in which harsh punishment and discipline were never used. Starting to perform on stage at the age of six she already displayed ability as a singer well beyond her age. Showing no signs of shyness she would sing the right note with perfect pitch, keeping perfect time.
