E dward Gallagher and Al Shean were one of most famous male teams in Vaudeville. Their famous partnership is unique in the annals of show business in that it was based on the strength of one self named song - MISTER GALLAGHER AND MISTER SHEAN. Their famous song was introduced to Vaudeville audiences in 1921 and was the hit number of the Ziegfeld Follies of 1922. Gallagher and Shean's signature costumes came from the Follies number which was set in Egypt, probably reflecting the "Egyptian craze" of the early 1920s. Their often acrimonious off-stage relationship (coupled with a Smith and Dale "Doctor Kronkhite" type sketch) served as the inspiration for Neil Simon's hit play and movie "The Sunshine Boys". The movie won an Oscar for former vaudevillian George Burns Al Shean was the uncle of the Marx Brothers and was a comic mentor to his nephews. He began his vaudeville career in 1890 with the knockabout comedy group, the Manhattan Comedy Four . When the group disbanded in 1900, he partnered with Charles L. Warren until 1904. He was well known as a sketchwriter as well as a performer.
