THE MATTHEW GAINES MEMORIAL
by Dale Baum
The Battalion
The launching point for studying Gaines begins with the work of three historians, Ann Patton Malone, Merline Pitre, and Donald G. Nieman. Malone's frequently cited essay introduces a massive amount of insightful information on Gaines, while Pitre's book on Texas black leaders and her synopsis for The New Handbook of Texas are the basis for the summary of Gaines's life that follows here. Nieman, on the other hand, presents a revealing look at the local circumstances in which Gaines operated in Washington County, a postwar Texas county that ranked first in the state in the number of black inhabitants. Historians of Texas complain that the information provided by these authors appears, unfortunately, with unsettling recurrence. Nevertheless, the future promises forthcoming material, especially about the subtleties of what Gaines and other black lawmakers endured and how they went about their duties. Future research promises to yield a new and fuller picture of what the black political experience was like during Reconstruction.
Gaines himself fell victim to unjust tactics. Denounced on the Senate floor by a Democratic opponent as a "flat-footer [sic] nigger" and threatened with death outside the legislature by racist whites, Gaines was indicted in 1871 on a charge of bigamy by a grand jury at La Grange in Fayette County. He was convicted of the charge in 1873, but in the same year the charge was overturned on appeal to the Texas Supreme Court. Subsequently, Gaines was reelected to the senate of the Democratic-dominated Thirteenth Legislature, but his seat was successfully challenged by the candidate whom Gaines had defeated. In a farcical procedure that ignored the ruling in his favor by the high court, Gaines was neither represented by counsel nor given an opportunity to testify before the senate committee on privileges and elections. Without political connections, Gaines's career was over.

Current Reno Weather Music Reviews Aug 1, 2002 - Davis Gaines Ends Reno's Artown Festival Before 2500 at Wingfield By Jack Neal Davis Gaines, the Broadway star and splendid singer of songs, ended Reno's month long Artown Festival Wednesday night (7/31/2002) at the Wingfield Park Amphitheater before over 2500 lovers of popular standards and show tunes.
The concert was co-sponsored by the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and US Bank. Although the event was free (save for a $5 donation to the Food Bank), the talent - including the evening's headliner and the five musicians who backed him (plus a sound man from New York and a lighting man from Reno) - added up to a no-expenses-spared outing under the stars worthy of New York's Central Park.
The event had its risks. Standing before a huge, outdoor picnic-and-libations crowd sitting on blankets and low-back chairs beside a sometimes noisy downtown street, the personal magnetism it takes to hold an audience can be a sometime thing. Gaines has the presence to make such an evening of music work, even through stretches of musical intimacy. What he has, in addition to a liquid, lyric voice, a terrific sense of theater and good looks, is "it." In this case "it" is not merely sex appeal, although Gaines does not lack for that. It's the kind of "it" stars like Mary Martin had; an indefinable something that makes one a weaver of magic, a spinner of music, a toucher of both funny bones and hearts. That's star quality and Gaines has it.

Current Reno Weather Music Reviews Aug 1, 2001 - Davis Gaines, Reno Jazz Orchestra's Sensational Artown Finale By Jack Neal Swinging his way through his third season as a Reno Artown Festival headliner, Broadway singing star Davis Gaines joined forces with one of the best jazz bands extant, the 21-piece Reno Jazz Orchestra, for a closing Reno Artown concert that was sensational. What a marvelous way to end this year's month-long festival.
Before a vast audience of thousands jammed into the Wingfield Park Amphitheater Tuesday night (7/31/2001), Gaines and the Reno Jazz Orchestra pulled out all stops for an evening of soaring song and hip and hipnotic orchestra playing that has to go down in the annals of such summertime outdoor events as memorable.
From the orchestra's powerhouse second-half opener, Gordon Goodwin's "Sing, Sang, Sung," to Gaines's quiet closing, "All My Tomorrows" accompanied solely by pianist Carol Anderson, the emotional highs of the concert's big moments and the poignant solitude of its intimate moments provided the kind of roller coaster ride of thrilling ups and downs that makes a concert connect in magical ways with an audience. If Tuesday's concert was the stuff that dreams are made of, and it was, it was also the kind of remarkable evening of music making that can only be brought to life by exceptional performers who mirror life's shared moments and reflect them back to enthralled listeners.
Gaines, who rose to stardom playing the title role in the San Fransisco production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera," sings with a liquid sound that allows him to wrap his voice around lyrics and phrases for personal insights with words and a rapturous spinning of melodic lines that is seductive, vintage artistry of the most riveting kind. Where can one find a more finely spun interpretation of "Night and Day" or a more affecting picture of loneliness than "Saturday Night is the Loneliest Night of the Week" than with Mr. Gaines?

LIVE! A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING
The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles performed remarkable shows featuring the music of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, with guest stars Davis Gaines and Christine Ebersole. The Chorus, in its inimitable fashion, recollected, reviewed and recast many of the standards from this vast repertoire, with new arrangements and orchestrations by Ron Abel. The shows were electrifying in their musical and dramatic energy, and the audience, as you will hear on this live recording, caught the spirit of not only the Chorus' singing and staging, but also the wondrous magic of the lyrics and music of these giants from the musical theater. The Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles proudly celebrated its 20th Anniversary season with the release of this, our sixth recording, A Grand Night For Singing The Sound of Music/

A Conversation with Davis Gaines Singer/Actor/Recording Artist Davis Gaines - Broadways longest-running Phantom of the Opera and star of the latest Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Whistle Down the Wind, talks with Michael McLane of the Civic Theatre of Central Florida about his upcoming benefit concerts in his hometown of Orlando. MM: Everyone at the Civic Theatre, and indeed, judging from the response we've had, everyone throughout the Central Florida area, is very excited about your performing here. Are you looking forward to it also? DG: Yes! I've wanted to come back to Orlando for a long time and perform, but my schedule has never permitted it, especially during the last six years while I was involved with Phantom of the Opera Soundbyte #1 Soundbyte #2 Soundbyte #3 Soundbyte #4 I know the shows will be attended by family and old friends and I look forward to seeing them and to be able to perform for them, to let them see what I've been up to for the last few years. It will be nice to see some friendly, familiar faces. I know it's going to be a warm, friendly audience that is coming to enjoy the music. It's going to be a lot of fun. MM: When you perform in concerts, you usually sing in very large venues. The MainStage at the Civic is much smaller than, say, an arena hall.
