JONATHAN FRID'S SECRET LOVE AND HEARTBREAK! BY LAUNDY POWELL "I don;t know if I can talk about it" said Jonathan Frid quietly. " A heartbreak is a very personal thing." We were sitting together in a deserted corner of the "Dark Shadows" set. Everyone had broken for lunch, and I had jumped at the opportunity to speak to Jonathan Without interruptions. Naturally, the conversation had gotten around to the girls this dark, handsome star had known, and that's when I had asked Jonathan if he had ever had his heart stepped on. Immediately his smile faded, and he became serious. This was a dramatic change from the open,. friendly Jonathan I knew, who was always ready with an intelligent, well-thought out reply to any question. MUST TELL THE TRUTH The silence between us grew longer, and I stared to say something when he went on, " I could make up something that would be acceptable, I suppose. But I won't be dishonest about it." This didn't surprise me in the least, because I've never known Jonathan to lie about anything. But I'd never know him to sidestep a question either! My curiosity was aroused now, and I decided to approach the subject form another angle. Was there a certain type of girl who attracted him more than others?

I guess the ladies confuse me, Jonathan Frid the actor, with the character I portray. It's Barnabus [sic] they're responding to. I'm no more interesting than the guy next door. In fact, I haven't had a particularly groovy life, and I'm afraid that quite a lot of women have turned me down." Is it because he can't get the right girl to say "yes" that Jonathan has remained a bachelor all these years? Well, not quite. Jonathan admits that, for him, being marriage-shy is a chronic condition. "I'm an independent, moody person," Jonathan said. "I'd be terrified of coping with one woman and one woman only for an entire lifetime to have my life dedicated to somebody else. I guess I take marriage very seriously - maybe too seriously. I virtually worship the marriage ceremony. To me, marriage is sacred and divorce is a kind of sacrilege. When you marry you vow to remain together 'until death do you part'. Divorce makes a farce out of marriage. "I suppose the main reason I have never married is that I'm wedded to my profession. I'm what you might call a 'dedicated actor' - acting comes first, everything else comes after. Besides, acting is a very insecure profession - you never know where or when your next job will be. I'd hate to ask somebody else to share that insecurity with me. That would be a heck of a life to offer the woman that I loved.

Flash cameras were set, ready to immortalize the man "who means the world to us" as he stepped out of the world of make-believe at the ABC-TV studio in New York. They waited silently, reverently, their impatience harnessed to discipline rarely seem among here worshippers. Wee little ones no more than 8 or 9 waited on tiptoe, proudly displaying their fan buttons. The oldest among them was 16. And then, all in unison, a chorus of gleeful screams broke loose. he was here! Their idol was approaching. Daytime television's one and only monster- Barnabas Collins! Out of the imagination of the writer for ABC-TV's "Dark Shadows" crept a ghoulish creature who, our of the artistry of Jonathan Frid, became a venerated vampire. Barnabas Collins is the idol of thousands. his fans fawn over him. He represents something they've never known before: greatness in the old world way, for there's a majestic quality to Barnabas which is rarely seen on the screen today. His young disciples come to pay homage from all parts of the country. (Would you believe Bad Axe, Michigan?) And they wait forever. (One little girl waited eight hours!) They come in pairs and droves, as often as a relative or a parent will bring them. Susan P., a 10-year-old from AStoria, Long Island, posed with him for a picture taken by big brother Jimmy, who was all of 13. Said Susan, blinking her awesome black eyes, "I love him 'cause he's so good and so handsome." (Barnabas is the first virtuous vampire known to the dreary legend!)
