What happens when you throw together a liberal comedian, a flag-waving country star, two Redskins cheerleaders, three hip-hop divas, and thousands of war-weary troops? Nevertheless, this is a story of a traveling troupe of "show folk" humbly doing our best to bring a little joy, laughter, music, and Christmas cheer to the men and women who bear the burden of this administration's policies. As I said to every soldier who thanked me for coming, "It's my honor." Nevertheless, Darryl does support Operation Iraqi Freedom wholeheartedly, and he told me on the last day of our trip that he'd become incensed when he first heard I was on the tour because he'd been looking forward to eight days when he didn't have to defend his position. He sees these USO Tours as a kind of vacation from controversy, and now he thought he was going to have to debate me the whole eight days. When Darryl told me this, I asked if he'd been worried I'd start the show in Baghdad like this: "Your president lied to you, and you are dying for no reason!!! Ladies and gentlemen, Darryl Worley!"

Al Franken is probably best known for his work on Saturday Night Live. A five-time Emmy winner for writing and producing, he also won the 1997 Grammy for Best Comedy Album. Franken got his first big break in 1975, when Lorne Michaels hired him and his then-partner Torn Davis to be part of the original writing staff of the groundbreaking late night show. Franken also won recognition for his on-camera work, first as half of Franken and Davjs, and subsequently for such characterizations as the one-man mobile uplink unit and new age cable TV host, Stuart Smalley. Smalley was the subject of Franken's 1992 book, I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough, and Doqgone It, People Like Me. The book provided the basis for a movie that Franken wrote and starred in for Paramount Pictures. The 1995 movie, ‘Stuart Saves His Family,' was directed by Harold Rats and received ‘Two Thumbs Up' from Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. Franken was co-writer (with Ronald Bass) of the 1994 Touchstone Pictures hit movie ‘When a Man Loves a Woman' starring Andy Garcia and Meg: Ryan. Ebert called the drama ‘a wise and ambitious film about the way alcoholism affects the fabric of a marriage.'

Save Al Franken! [Aug 12, 2003] Today I'd planned to continue the delightful narrative of my run for the California governor's mansion. In the media, there can only be one story, and this is it, pal. But then came word that my services were, once again, needed. The Fox News Channel has sued political satirist Al Franken to stop him from using the words "fair and balanced" in the title of his new book, scheduled to publish next month. The suit claims that the subtitle is "likely to cause confusion among the public about whether Fox News has authorized or endorsed the book and about whether Franken is affiliated with FNC." Good lord. Who among the five, possibly ten percent of the American people who could recognize Franken in a lineup would think that he's affiliated with the Fox News Channel? The man stands politically to the left of every major entertainment figure except Michael Moore and maybe Janeane Garofalo. We all know that this suit is hogwash. We also know that Al Franken can defend himself, and that his publisher can defend him, too. Anyone who has been a recurring cast member on Saturday Night Live for nearly 30 years doesn't need much help calling attention to his cause. Nonetheless, it's the policy of this website to rise to the aid of satire whenver it's threatened, even if the threatened satirist is three links above it on the comedy food chain. Therefore, I declare this Friday a day of emergency protest.

    UPDATED: 4:29 p.m. EDT May 2, 2004
WASHINGTON, D.C. Comedian and liberal talk show host Al Franken puts the odds of a 2008 bid for the U.S. Senate at better than even. Franken (pictured, left) told The Associated Press he is considering a challenge to Republican Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota. The 52-year-old Franken said he will make a decision by the end of next year. Coleman is up for re-election in 2008. Born in New York City, where he currently resides, Franken grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis. He's the host of the "O'Franken Factor" on the liberal network Air America Radio. He was friends with the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, a Minnesota Democrat who died in a plane crash a week and a half before the 2002 election. Coleman eventually won that election over former Vice President Walter Mondale, who was appointed to replace Wellstone.

NEXT WEEK, Air America Radio debuts its around-the-clock radio station of the left. Al Franken will play the marquee role, filling the noon-to-3:00 p.m. slot. Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead will run the morning program with Public Enemy rapper Chuck D. And comedienne Janeane Garofalo will be punching the clock at 8:00 p.m. Opening Day is March 31. Which raises a good question: Why don't they just wait 24 hours and do the launch on April Fool's Day? Suddenly the idea that liberals can have a successful talk-radio franchise has become something other than a joke. It's hard to say why, but in the accumulated success of Rush Limbaugh and Fox News, the left sees a mirror-image of what conservatives call liberal media bias. It's not the same thing, of course, but persecution envy has set in, and now various influential and/or rich liberals want their own vibrant alternative media and legions of devoted fans. The left wants dittoheads, and bad. Aside from the obvious problem with this scenario (the left already dominates the networks, NPR, CNN, Hollywood, and so on), there are several ways in which the basic idea doesn't add up.

(AP) Fox News dropped its lawsuit against Al Franken on Monday, three days after a federal judge refused to block the liberal humorist from using the Fox slogan "Fair and Balanced" on the cover of his book.
The lawsuit had sought unspecified damages from Franken and Penguin Group, publisher of "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right."
"It's time to return Al Franken to the obscurity that he's normally accustomed to," Fox News spokeswoman Irena Steffen said. On Friday, U.S. District Judge Denny Chin denied Fox's request for an injunction against the book cover. Fox contended that some people might be tricked into thinking the book was a Fox product because the cover includes the words "Fair and Balanced" and a picture of Bill O'Reilly, the network's top anchor. But the judge said Fox's case was "wholly without merit," and the trademark "Fair and Balanced," registered by Fox in 1998, was weak. He also said the network was "trying to undermine the First Amendment."

(AP) They haven't got a name or a launch date yet, but the entrepreneurs who dream of launching a liberal radio network have just landed themselves a lead man: Comedian and best-selling author Al Franken.
Progress Media and Franken said they have reached an agreement for Franken to host a live, three-hour daily broadcast that would form the anchor of the programming schedule.
In an interview, Franken said the format of the show was still evolving, but he said he was certain that it wouldn't be akin to that used by his rival Rush Limbaugh, which Franken described as “non-guested confrontation.” “He has no one on the show but it's confrontation,” Franken said. “His show is just him railing for three hours.”

    Al Franken's Lies
By Joe Taylor Yesterday, May the First, I got Al Franken's book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them , or, more precisely, its British version (London: Penguin 2003). I expected a left-wing version of Ann Coulter, or a second Michael Moore; Franken turned out to be better than that, although granted, almost everyone and everything is better than Ann Coulter, so that probably doesn't count. Al Franken explicitly mentions that his book is primarily satire - "Thanks to TeamFranken [sic], you can rest assured that almost every fact in this book is correct. Either that or it's a joke," he adds (xiii-xiv). I presume that he's right, because after all, what are a few tens of falsities and outrageous statements in a book of 357 pages, which probably contains hundreds of facts? I am probably being too harsh here, however, because a lot of falsities - I don't call them lies because I have no idea whether Franken knew they were incorrect or misleading, even though I have a hunch that he did - repeat themselves. One such wrong fact is the figures of surplus and deficit under Clinton and Bush respectively. It ironically begins in page xvi, just two pages after Franken's grand assertion: "Bush squandered a $4.6 trillion surplus and is plunging us into deficits as far as God can see." The USA never had a 4.6-trillion-dollar surplus; even Franken admits later in the book that the surplus was projected in 2000 over ten years. And I presume that it would've remained, with Gore or Bush (what Bush gave away in tax cuts Gore would've given in increased spending; Greenspan recommended paying down the debt, but he could only say that because he didn't have the burden of winning elections), had the NASDAQ not crashed on March 28th, 2000, sending the dot-com bubble down the drain. The Republicans say that Bush inherited a recession, and they're right at least insofar as the onset of the recession was ten months prior to Bush's inauguration; the question is whether Bush helped or worsened the recession.

After a few days of taking hits for some controversial remarks , Coleman told me he had decided to respond in more detail about the comments he made in Roll Call. Specifically, people had been offended by this passage in the Capitol Hill daily: " 'To be very blunt, and God watch over Paul's soul, I am a 99 percent improvement over Paul Wellstone,' Coleman said . . . When pressed about the remaining 1 percent, Coleman sidestepped the issue . . . ." On the phone, Coleman sounded anguished. "I believe I owe it to the people of Minnesota and to Paul's soul to explain that other 1 percent where Paul was definitely better than me." "Yes, I was curious about that," I told him. "Well, for one thing, I guess you'd have to say passion. Paul was definitely more passionate than I am. Which I think came from his deep conviction," Coleman explained. "So passion and conviction?" I asked.

E-Mail This Article Published on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 by the Los Angeles Times To the Moon, George, to the Moon by Al Franken On Jan. 14, 2004, President Bush announced his bold vision for America's space program. He vowed to return to the moon and then "to take the next steps of space exploration: human missions to Mars and to worlds beyond." Only six days later, Bush gave his State of the Union address. He talked about his economic plan, which had created about 1,000 new jobs in the previous month alone. And about the dozens of "weapons of mass destruction-related program activities" found by David Kay, 12 of which were coloring books. And about the dangers of steroids and the importance of sexual abstinence. (The Bush team dodged a bullet on this one. Arnold Schwarzenegger had been slated to sit next to First Lady Laura Bush, but was removed two minutes before the speech when a media-savvy aide realized that would make for an embarrassing cutaway shot.) But nowhere in the president's address was there any mention of Mars, let alone sending a person to it. Now, telling the nation you're sending a man to Mars is not like telling the kids you're taking them to Applebee's. The kids get all excited, looking forward to the curly fries. If you stay home, yes, they're disappointed, but it's not that big a deal. Mars is different. Unveiling a mission to Mars and then not mentioning it less than a week later in the State of the Union address suggests a certain casualness in our president's approach to governing the world's only remaining superpower. I don't know much about space travel, but I bet it takes more than six days' focus to get a man to Mars.
