Spinsanity debate: Al Franken vs. Rich Lowry
March 15-18, 2004 From the editors (3/15):
We are pleased to introduce the first-ever Spinsanity debate between author/humorist Al Franken and National Review editor Rich Lowry, who have critiqued each other's books, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right and Legacy: Paying the Price for the Clinton Years . This is not an endorsement of their work, but a unique opportunity for our site to serve as a nonpartisan forum for a debate between two of America's top political writers. We believe both pieces represent useful contributions to the debate over those books and the issues they discuss. When Lowry and Franken approached us about publishing their exchange, we agreed provided that the essays were generally serious and substantive. We also reserved the right to respond in order to point out deceptive claims or ad hominem attacks (just as we would for any political writers), and we plan to post our response to a few points that they raise later this week. We hope frequent readers will enjoy this debate between two writers who appreciate Spinsanity's reputation for non-partisan fairness and that those coming to the site for the first time will stay and explore more of our work.

Al Franken's take on politics
(CNN) Al Franken is a funny guy, but he takes politics very seriously and isn't shy about his liberal politics or taking digs at the Republicans. Here's Franken on a variety of topics. On the Democrats and September 11: "I think there was a lot of timidity after 9/11 [but] that was actually rightfully so. We rallied 'round the president and rallied 'round the country, and should have. MORE STORIES Al Franken's guide to life "And that's something, probably, the Republicans would not have done. If it had been Gore, they would have been all over him. They would have said, 'The Clinton-Gore administration let down our guard,' and it would have been his CIA, and his FBI, and ... they would have been all over him to attack the next day. ... I think the Democrats did the right thing." On Enron and the problems of corporate America: "I watched [former Enron executive Jeffrey] Skilling's testimony very closely. ... I think he's very smart. I think whatever prison he goes to he'll be the smartest guy there.

Fox News loses attempt to block satirist's book
Judge: Cover creates no confusion over origin, sponsorship

Fox sought to halt distribution of author-comedian Al Franken's book. Story Tools NEW YORK (CNN) Saying "This is an easy case," a federal judge ruled Friday against Fox News in its lawsuit asserting that a book by liberal satirist Al Franken violates its trademarked slogan, "fair and balanced." Fox was seeking an injunction to halt distribution of "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right." U.S. District Judge Denny Chin, after listening to about half an hour of oral arguments, said the lawsuit was "wholly without merit, both factually and legally." The 377-page book, which originally had a late September release date, went on sale Thursday. Fox objected especially to its cover, which displays the "fair and balanced" phrase in its subtitle and an unflattering photograph of the news channel's most popular host, Bill O'Reilly. It argued that the cover layout "is likely to cause confusion among consumers as to the origin and sponsorship of the book." The judge disagreed.

NEW YORK (AP) They haven't got a name or a launch date yet, but the entrepreneurs who dream of launching a liberal radio network have just landed themselves a lead man: Comedian and best-selling author Al Franken. Progress Media planned to announce Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with Franken to host a live, three-hour daily broadcast that would form the anchor of the programming schedule, according to people familiar with the matter. In an interview, Franken said the format of the show was still evolving, but he said he was certain that it wouldn't be akin to that used by his rival Rush Limbaugh, which Franken described as "non-guested confrontation." "He has no one on the show but it's confrontation," Franken said. "His show is just him railing for three hours."

It's the third day of recorded rehearsals for Franken's daily radio show on Air America, a left-leaning, all-talk network that launches next week, and he's trying to choke down a quick lunch during the few minutes of commercials between segments. On the other side of the studio desk, the show's cohost, Franken's friend and radio pro Katherine Lanpher, is experiencing every note of the gastric symphony. She shoots him an amused, exasperated look. "Bet you're glad you didn't have the chips," she deadpans. It isn't the first time Franken has broken a cardinal rule of radio. "I tried to tell him yesterday he can't eat on the air." She laughs. "Listeners don't want to hear ... that." advertisement
But Franken is lost in his thoughts. He's pecking ideas into his laptop, cracking up at his own punch lines, trying to decide which of the many archenemies of the left is next in line for his special brand of verbal pounding. George Tenet? Dick Cheney? George W. Bush? Ten seconds till air. Franken looks up: "What are we doing now? Are we taking calls in this segment?"

Is Bush as religious as he claims? These, and other questions addressed by liberal comedian-activist Al Franken
Beliefnet Editor-in-Chief Steven Waldman interviewed Al Franken about his new book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, and about his own spirituality. Excerpts from the interview:
The first line of the book is, “God chose me to write this book.” Now why would He go and do a thing like that?
Because He’s pissed off at Bush, whose friends have been going around saying he felt he was chosen at this time to lead the nation, presumably by God. God actually chose Al Gore, and got him the popular and electoral vote, which is usually sufficient.
So God asked me to write the book.
What do you make of the use of religious language by President Bush? Sometimes it’s ok and appropriate for a president to use God. I probably wouldn’t if I were president. He wears his religion on his sleeve and yet this is the least Christian administration I can think of, in terms of Christ certainly as I understand it. How so?

    SCHIP

This gets pretty wonky, so brace yourself. Franken says I make a "mistake" when I write of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (italics to highlight the point in contention), "The generous federal subsidy encouraged states to maximize their health benefits, essentially extending a federal entitlement to children living in families with incomes roughly 200 percent above the poverty line ." But this is absolutely correct. It is Franken who is mistaken, and apparently doesn't have the slightest idea what he is writing about. Such programs often apply to families with incomes 200 percent above the poverty line. It is a way to ensure that they reach the working poor. "200 percent of poverty" is, therefore, pretty standard public-policy argot, but Franken seems never to have heard of it, and insists that I'm wrong that SCHIP applies to families in that category. The error, however, is his: According to the American Medical Association, "SCHIP coverage is now available in 38 states and the District of Columbia for children up to age 19 whose family income is at or above 200 percent of the federal poverty level."

The center — a part of the John F. Kennedy School of Government which says it is "dedicated to exploring the intersection of press, politics and public policy in theory and practice" — chose the sometime comedian to be one of its Shorenstein Fellows for Spring 2003. An effusive press release said Franken would be "working on a book examining whether or not there is a liberal bias in the media, including a look at the media's treatment of George W. Bush and his administration." Now we have the results of Franken's work in his new book "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right." In it, Franken attacks lots of people: Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, George W. Bush, and even Alan Colmes, the liberal half of Fox News's Hannity and Colmes whom Franken believes lacks the gumption to stand up to conservative counterpart Sean Hannity.

POLITICAL SATIRIST
Al Franken is an Emmy Award-winning television writer and producer, New York Times bestselling author, and Grammy-winning comedian. In 1975, Al Franken was a member of the original writing staff and famous comedians that created the groundbreaking late night show, Saturday Night Live. Al Franken remained with the original show until 1980 and then returned in 1985. He stayed for another 10 years, leaving after the 1994-95 season. Al Franken received four Emmys for his writing on SNL and a fifth for producing. He also won recognition for his on-camera work, first as half of the comedy team of "Franken and Davis," then for his "Al Franken Decade" persona. He also was recognized for such characterizations as the one-man mobile uplink unit and Stuart Smalley, the new age cable TV host. Smalley was the subject of Franken's first book, I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough and Doggone It, People Like Me, which was published in 1992. It provided the basis for a movie that Franken wrote and starred in for Paramount Pictures. The 1995 movie, "Stuart Saves His Family", was directed by Harold Ramis and received "two thumbs up" from Siskel and Ebert. In 1992, was brought into the group of political satirists by anchoring Comedy Central's "Indecision '92", winning wide critical acclaim for his coverage of both conventions and election night. In 1996, he teamed with "Strange Bedfellow" Arianna Huffington, again covering the party conventions and election night for "Politically Incorrect", where he continues to be a frequent guest along with other political humorists.
