When thought of in circles, Florek is the poor guy (along with Richard Brooks, ex-Paul), who got shafted when the network insisted on more women in the cast. Fortunately, the powers that be had the insight to keep his character around and after a few guest appearances, he found his place heading up the Special Victims' Unit . We're glad he and his licorice lovin' self are still around to give us the straight picture. How did you get connected with the show in the first place? Was it a regular casting call? You know what, it was a little more than a regular casting call. I had done there was it was a show with [composer] Randy Newman's music called, "Maybe I'm Doing it Wrong," which was the name of one of his songs that we did at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles. And Joe Stern, who was a co-producer, co-executive producer with Dick [Wolf, creator, EP] at the very beginning, had seen me in that, and he had gone to Dick and said, "You've got to see this guy." And Joe used me in this Afterschool Special about gambling, so when the thing came up, Joe said, "You've got to see this guy." So I came in and I think I met him a couple of times and it just clicked and it fell into place.

Florek's enjoying his role as Lincoln. "It's interesting, because he's really one of the most revered figures in American history, and I'm playing him most irreverently," says Florek. "We're doing a lighthearted, fun comedy that takes place in the 19th century. It's silly, with lots of contemporary references, and we're playing fast and loose with sacred ground." Florek was raised in Flat Rock, Michigan, and entered Eastern Michigan University as a math and physics major, but left with a newfound interest in drama. "I really thought I was going to be a math/physics person, but I was in choir, and they offered me a scholarship in drama. I thought, hey, maybe it'll be more fun than synthetic projective geometry." Florek moved to New York where he did years of theater including "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; "Loves' Labors Lost"; "Strange Snow"; and "Death of a Salesman." He then headed west to San Diego in the 1970s, where he participated in many La Jolla Playhouse productions and eventually got enough work in Los Angeles to move there.

Law: The Movie. Florek's additional television credits include guest starring on The Practice, NYPD Blue, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Smart Guy, Wings, Roseanne and Ellen. Florek also appeared in the telefilm The Pentagon Wars and the award-winning HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. Raised in Flat Rock, Michigan, Florek entered Eastern Michigan University as a math and physics major but left with a newfound interest in drama. I really thought I was going to be a math/physics person, but I was in choir, and they offered me a scholarship in drama. I thought, hey, maybe it'll be more fun than synthetic projective geometry. Florek moved to New York where his theater work included A Midsummer Night's Dream, Love's Labour's Lost, Strange Snow
