Llangoedmor Contents Kelly's Directory South Wales 1895 The data below has been extracted by Gareth Hicks (December 2003) with the kind permission of the publishers from the CD of the same title as the main heading. For more books from Archive CD Books see their web page. Place names are as written unless clearly misleading. Llangoedmore Is a widely scattered parish on the river Teify, 1 miles east from Cardigan station on the Cardigan and Whitland branch of the Great Western railway, in the county of Cardigan, Troedyraur hundred, Lower Troedyraur petty sessional division, Cardigan union and county court district, rural deanery of Sub-Aeron, archdeaconry of Cardigan and diocese of St. David's. The church of St. Cynllo is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, porch and a central turret with spire, containing one bell: there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1725. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge £440, average £326, net yearly income £230, in the gift of L. H. Jenkins esq. and held since 1893 toy the Rev. Richard Bowen Jenkins M.A. of Queen's College, Oxford. There are two Baptist chapels.

Willen People Henry Whiting, Farmer Joseph Evan Whiting, patriarch Joseph Evan Whiting senior was a small local farmer. He farmed the same 100 acres that his family had farmed for over 100 years. But Joseph believed in 'progress'.In 1836 he bought his first seed drill and started hiring himself out to other farmers. Gradually he built up his business, buying another seed drill, then a threshing machine and then a steam engine (see picture); the first in the area. To start with there was lots of local opposition and he had to travel 30-40 miles to get work. However, he did find an ally in Farmer Smith of Great Woolstone, the inventor of the steam plough, for whom he did much work. As he made money, Joseph was able to obtain more land. The landowners such as Lord Carrington and Mr Carlisle MP were happy to let him have leases on their farms because they could see his was a good, hardworking farmer. Joseph also believed in a good education being the key to success. He sent his sons to school. His eldest son Joseph did not join his father in the business until he was 15. On his death in the late in 1888, three of his sons: Joseph, George and Charles decided to farm as a partnership . Henry, decided to continue with his dairy business alone.

Ifan y Mynydd , Evan of the Mountain), b. ca. 1787 at Aberavon, Glamorgan, m. Mary (b. ca. 1793 outside Glamorgan, d. by 1851). Evan's wife Mary is said to have been the daughter of a squire in Ross-on-Wye, in whose household Evan worked as a groom (see story ). In 1841, Evan was a laborer, living at Pant yr Ysgawen, Lower Baglan, Glamorgan, with his wife Mary and their children Robert, Elizabeth, Cathrine, Anna, Thomas, and William. In 1851, he was a farmer of 30 acres, living in a cottage near San Fain, Lower Baglan, with his children Esther and William and a house servant (Thomas SIMKINS, b. ca. 1832 at Baglan). Evan's descendant Gareth Morgan recalled that Evan was a farmer at Gelli Deg and one of the hereditary burgesses of the ancient borough of Aberavon.
